Project name & location: Woolf House at Howard Street - San Francisco, CA
California Division-Project Overview
Complete interior renovation of 189 occupied retirement residential units and common areas
at the Woolf House Apartments in downtown San Francisco.
The Challenge:
There were a number of both logistical and operational challenges involved with this project.
Such as:
• Working downtown in a highly congested area of the city.
• Working in an occupied apartment complex in sync with other trades and minimizing
disturbance to elderly retired tenants.
• Performing asbestos abatement and soft demolition work in full dust tight negative air
containments at 24 units per floor of a 9 story building.
• Planning deliveries of materials to the site, the removal of all the waste from the site and
the planned use of strictly controlled street parking.
• Working to a tight schedule for each phase of the project.
The Solution:
• Plan with the building owner, building management, tenants and the general contractor to establish a safe, viable schedule for
all phases of the work.
• Set up a site meeting place for pre work safety meetings and site specific safety requirements for involved parties.
• Posted a job site board with all project information sheets. This ensured seamless communication between all parties.
• All workers wore SHC site safety equipment at all times.
• Installation and implementation of full Class 1 negative air containment at all units and corridors on each floor with regulatory
warning and safety signs.
• Dust control sticky mats installed at each entry and exit location.
• All asbestos abatement and soft demolition work was performed using wet methods to minimize dust generation.
• All wastes are put in secure containers and labeled where required. They are then loaded into rolling carts with secure lids and
removed from the floor off hours to minimize delays to residents while using the building elevators.
• Load out and transport of the wastes are performed by SHC, using our closed hazardous waste truck, load out performed off
hours due to street parking restrictions.
• Successful independent air clearance performed by the owner at the completion of each phase of abatement and soft demolition.
• By using fully trained and experienced work crews, we ensured a safe and viable schedule, allowing for efficient work progress
and ensured quality results for the owner and of course, happy tenants.
The Result:
• Each phase was performed on time, within budget and exceeded the client’s
expectations.
• SHC successfully executed a multi stakeholder project in a narrow time line.
• The tenants were very happy as any disruption to their daily routine was minimal;
this was one of our top priorities at the start of this project.
• Minimal disruption to the surrounding tenants.

Project name & location: Up In Fire - Phoenix, aZ
Responding to a structure fire is always a difficult and sensitive situation. From obtaining the emergency
permits, developing the scope, taking inventory of personal belongings and working with the tenants who
are not allowed back in their homes.
After performing the physical inventory of contents, SHC crews removed all burned and damaged materials
as asbestos material, packaged and disposed of them as such. Contents, wall systems and floor coverings
were removed as asbestos containing materials. Using boom lifts and alternative ways of performing the roof
demolition were required due to the instability of the areas
SHC returned to the owner, a safe clean structure for rebuild. We noticed we were under the close watch of
the media and the tenants which presented even more of a challenge. With that in mind, the SHC work crew
provided a professional job to the end users which exceeded their expectations.
This project spanned over the course of 2 weeks and at the end the property was clean, safe and ready to be
made home again for 12 families.

Project name & location: cleaning up the tunnels - Phoenix, aZ
The discovery of significant amounts of rat feces put an urgent project
of retrofitting a building’s IT system to a delicate standstill.
Mobilizing on an emergency basis, SHC responded within 24 hours
prepared to complete this project as quickly as possible. The ability
to get the building up and running again depended on SHC’s ability
to react quickly.
This project was located 300 miles from the home office and being
prepared and equipped to handle an unseen site was critical.
SHC assessed the situation and the plan was rolled out to the
owners for approval. All of the crawlspace area of the 8,000
sf building was to be HEPA vacuumed to remove rat and other
feces. Asbestos debris was also found in the crawlspace, again
confirming the importance of being prepared for everything.
Carcasses of dead animals were also found and removed and
handled properly.
As a proactive solution to the owners, SHC brought in a certified
pest control expert to permanently eradicate the problem of rats,
cats and other pests getting into this crawlspace and damaging
the building’s pipes and wiring.
Humane traps were set out to remove live animals from the
space. Installation of screens at entry points and backfill was
performed at openings into the crawlspace to reduce the ability
of the pests reoccupying the clean space.
SHC was able to complete this task on short notice in a matter of
3 days. The owners were happy that we successfully completed
a day early and allowed them to become operational again.

Project name & location: Satellite Central Apartment Building, Oakland, CA
Asbestos/Lead Abatement plus soft demolition for renovation and seismic
strengthening in a fully occupied 145 Unit, 10 Floor elderly residential
apartment building
The Challenge:
To abate and provide soft demolition work for a major interior and exterior renovation of Satellite
Central Apartment building in Oakland, CA. The work had to be performed in a building fully
occupied by elderly residents, many of which, had disabilities. This required careful planning
and coordination with the owner and tenants to minimize disturbing the residents during the
abatement activities and also to ensure that they had full access to all entry and exit routes
at all times. This meant that the work had to be performed to a very tight schedule during all
phases of the project.
The Solution:
We coordinated in advance with and had meetings with all the relevant stake
holders, such as; the building owner, regulatory agencies, building management,
tenants, the general contractor and the other service providers. This helped to
establish a smooth viable schedule for all phases of the work. It made getting
all required permits and insurances in place before the start of the project less of
a challenge due to prior planning and coordinating with the stake holders. SHC
worked with their partners to have a central place for pre work safety meetings
and site specific safety requirements, this was done to minimize disruption to the
tenants (which was our top priority.) We Posted a job site board with all project
information sheets, again, this was done to ensure safety and also, to ensure proper lines of communication from all parties. All
workers of course, wore SHC site safety jackets. All asbestos abatement and soft demolition work was performed in full containment
negative work zones to minimize dust within the work area. All the generated wastes
are labeled where required; the waste was then loaded into rolling carts with secure
lids and removed from the floors off hours. Independent air clearance was performed
by the owner at the completion of the abatement and soft demolition scope of work to
release the areas back to the owner for other renovation work.
The Result:
The project was completed on time, on
budget and met the client’s expectations.
The successful completion of this project led to happy and satisfied tenants.
SHC’s seismic strengthening services expertise met and exceeded all stake holders’
expectations.
By using fully trained and experienced work crews, we executed a safe, on schedule
work strategy.

Project name & location: Breaking Down the Walls - Phoenix, aZ
Selective demolition of block walls containing asbestos containing
vermiculite. Working side by side with a General contractor on an
active public library. If the efforts by City agencies to improve the
local public buildings, they ran across unexpected hurdles and
expenditures. With little wiggle room in the schedule or budget, the
agency worked with SHC to develop the methods, time tables and
required safety precautions that were developed with the public
in mind.
Daily safety meetings were held to review and assess the safety
and ever changing. SHC performed saw cutting on pre marked
sections to allow for new doorways. In other areas, complete
demolition of selected walls was performed to allow for expansion
of the building. All materials were handled as asbestos containing
materials and kept wet, labeled and wrapped as needed. Performing
demolition from scaffold in a safe and quiet manner is difficult in
any situation, however doing it in suits and respirators make this
task more challenging in the heat of the Arizona sun.
This abatement project was completed in approximately 4 weeks
from when the appropriate permits were valid and completion.
We removed 80 cubic yards of asbestos waste from the site.Upon
substantial completion of the project third party air sampling
verified the ability to deregulate the area and return the areas to
the owner.During the course of this project the regulatory agency
inspected the area two times and found no items of violation. SHC
had no safety violations and completed this project on time.
