The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I
Basketball Tournament, more commonly referred to as March
Madness, is a month-long basketball tournament featuring the
nation’s 68 most accomplished teams. The tournament,
particularly the Sweet 16 and later rounds, represents the
pinnacle of college basketball. In some cases, success during
the NCAA tournament can foreshadow positive results at the
professional level.
Carmelo Anthony is perhaps the best example of a player to
excel at both the collegiate level and in the National Basketball
Association (NBA).
3. NCAA
During his freshmen year at Syracuse, Anthony averaged more than
22 points and 10 rebounds. Over the course of his time at the school,
Anthony led the team to a 36-5 overall record and the 2003 NCAA
championship, Syracuse’s only national title. The Brooklyn-born
forward has gone on to play in the NBA for 13 successful years,
which have included multiple postseason runs and one of the most
prolific scoring careers the league has ever witnessed.
Of course, not all players who excel in college experience the same
seamless transition to the pro leagues. In his third and final collegiate
campaign, University of the Pacific center Michael Olowokandi
averaged 22.2 points, the same as Carmelo Anthony, on nearly 61
percent shooting. He was selected first overall by the Los Angeles
Clippers in the 1998 NBA Draft. Unlike some college players who
struggle to adjust to the professional game, Olowokandi managed to
play 10 seasons in the NBA. However, he never showed the
dominance and potential responsible for his high draft position,
averaging less than 9 points per game for his career and shooting
over 45 percent in just one season.
