Jacky Chen Professor Navarro English 1A 16 October, 2021 Impacts Of Art to The World and Why It Had Been Disregarded in Many Places Art is the expression, application, or depiction of creative ability and creativity via visual media such as painting and sculpture. The artists have made significant contributions to society via their work, which has resulted in a sea shift in how people see real-world events. Nonetheless, art brings silent ideas to life and allows them to be interpreted by the rest of the world present artists art with a purpose in mind. Various individuals perceive their intentions and meanings differently based on their prior exposure to art, their known history, and the historical period in which the art is exhibited. In this context, I will use chapter two of our textbook to discuss the influence of arts on society while critically analyzing the author's use of rhetorical devices and comparing them with " Dr. Larry Brewster and California Arts-in-Corrections: A Case Study in Correctional Arts Research." This chapter of the book is written by Checker and Fishman and focuses on many issues, but I will point out her arguments on the impact of art in New York and why art had been disregarded in many places. The author uses rhetorical devices to appeal to us on the causes of art underestimation in New York. Using pathos, the author appeals to our emotions by stating the ways art has been underscoring in modern America. The author appeals to our feelings when passing through her arguments on the importance of art in people's lives, specifically in politics. She wants us to feel how she thinks about how art has lost its value in a modernized society. Here, the author paints a vivid picture of how she dwelled into teaching, she needed people to "be impacted by the theatre" (Checker and Fishman, 57). She constantly reminds us of why art should still be embraced even after the evolution of museums and the gallery system. "This work has underscored the many contradictions between our artistic ideas and how they have been institutionalized since the modern era, brilliantly accounting for the art world I experienced, with all its dissatisfactions" (Checker and Fishman, 53). Artists raised concerns about funding organizations' propensity to quantify economic outcomes rather than recognize aesthetic and social worth when evaluating creative initiatives piqued the author's attention. The author uses pathos and introduces a fair share of life examples and writings to appeal to us on how art is influential and impacts our daily lives. Also, through pathos, Fishman points out that "consequently, the arts no longer serve as a source of inspiration or a means of expressing concern for most people (Checker and Fishman, 53). It's not uncommon for the author to talk about art's significance and its favorable reactions. Throughout the chapter, she successfully uses pathos to build a sympathetic picture via emot ...

Week 3 The Visual Arts This week we look at the visual arts and the role of the artist. Sometimes, people look at a painting by Jackson Pollack and say, "My kid could have done that." However, the visual arts are about much more than the actual piece of art itself. Pollack was doing more than just splashing paint on a canvas, much more than a kid could have done. Visual art is not only about what is, so to speak, on the canvas. It can often be about impacting the way we think about the world around us and the world inside of us. After this week, students will be able to: · Describe the possible roles of visual artists within their communities · Identify several significant visual artists, movements and/or styles of visual art · Identify the impact of technological advances on visual art and artists Introduction This week, we will look at the visual arts and the role of the artist. Sometimes, people look at a painting by an artist such as Jackson Pollock and say, "My kid could have done that." However, the visual arts are about much more than the piece of art itself. Pollock was doing more than just splashing paint on a canvas, much more than a kid could have done. Visual art is not only about what is on the canvas. It speaks to the ways in which we think about the world around us and the world inside of us. When you look at this week's materials, think about not only how the works of art appear visually, but what they say about the human condition, as well as how they impacted the communities out of which they emerged. Outcomes After this week, you should be able to · describe the possible roles of visual artists within their communities · identify several significant visual artists, movements, and styles of visual art · identify the impact of technological advances on visual art and artists Cultural Diversity Paper Instructions For this essay, pick a significant of piece of art, literature, or music that represents a particular ethnic or racial group in America. Alternately, you could pick a specific philosopher, religious leader or theologian, political leader or writer who represents an ethnic or racial group in America. Write a 500-800 word essay in which you 1. Offer a brief description of the work or the person's point of view. 2. Argue for the importance and relevance of the work or person's point of view in communicating the experience of a particular ethnic or racial group within the American context. For instance, you could discuss how Elijah Muhammad’s view on race relations expressed the early 19th century post-slavery African American experience, or discuss how an Amy Tan novel represents the female Chinese American experience, or how a sculpture by Hank Willis Thomas communicates something about the history of the African American experience, or how a Sherman Alexie poem communicates the Native American experience. Make sure that your essay has a main point and that you offer enough evidence to support that main point in th.

APPENDIX A “A Blank Stare or Active Engagement? Toward a Christian Approach to the Arts” By C. Scott Shidemantle, Ph.D.1 Introduction I remember one of the first times that I visited the Carnegie Art Museum in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. As I browsed the various rooms, observing people looking pensively at the various works of art hanging on the walls, this question went through my mind: “What am I supposed to do while I’m here? Should I just sit and contemplate each piece with a blank stare like many of the other people in the room seemed to be doing? And, if so, what should I contemplate? Should I contemplate the brush strokes? Should I try to get into the head of the original artist who produced the piece? Should I focus on how the artwork ‘makes me feel’?” I felt like I needed some guidance! These questions became even more profound when I began to add to them the issue of whether or not my Christian faith should or should not interact in some way with my experience with the arts. Perhaps you have had similar experiences. The purpose of this brief essay is to give some reflections on what art “is” and what art “does,” and to propose some ideas on how you as a Christian might engage art meaningfully—beyond simply the “blank stare” approach. Situating Art in the Cultural Mandate After creating Adam and Eve, God instructed them to, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air…” (Genesis 1:28 NIV). This “filling” of the earth with humans, and cultivating the creation by drawing out its potential through developing it, is called by theologians “the Cultural Mandate.” What is the “Cultural Mandate”? Simply put, it is the call on all human beings to link together with shared values to communally cultivate God’s creation in God-honoring ways. Generally speaking, how does the Cultural Mandate relate to “art” and the call to some to be artists? We might say that art, and the call to be an artist, is “creational.” That is, God built into particular humans the ability to create “art” as one of the means by which we create and sustain human culture. In fact, we find that in the subsequent chapters of Genesis, where the playing out of the Cultural Mandate is portrayed, there are references to individuals who initiated various types of artistic expression. For example, there are Jubal (the father of music; Genesis 4:21) and Tubal-Cain (the father of metal working; Genesis 4:22). Behind the first of these two individuals we can perhaps picture in our minds groups of humans gathered together to hear music played on lyre and flute for the first time and being drawn together by that shared experience. This shared experience served to forge a “link,” or a shared “culture,” between those humans. 1 C. Scott Shidemantle (Ph.D. Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Th.M.

Research and intuition tells us that with good choices in our lives, we can expect our cognitive health to remain good into late adulthood—and even then, changes do not have to be unmanageable. The kinds of relationships and the ways we interact in relationships may change from phase to phase of adulthood, but our need for strong relationships will remain important to well-being and to making good choices in life. After all, we derive happiness, in part, from offering support to others and from receiving their support for our plans and our actions. Now that you have read and researched development over a lifespan, how has this helped you plan for positive growth over the next ten years? Writing Requirements · 1-2 page reflection · Reference to concepts learned throughout the course · APA format for in-text citations and list of references For this assignments, you will select significant productions of plays (from a national theatre, or featuring important personnel) that feature a monster. As part of your research, you will write a short summary of your findings of each of the productions. This summary must address the following questions: WHAT was the play about (a brief synopsis)? WHEN and WHERE did it take place? WHO was involved? Anyone of renown? Did it affect their careers? WHAT did the production look/sound like? What were the artists trying to ACCOMPLISH? How was it REVIEWED? Was it popular? Controversial? Unnoticed? Did it win any awards? You must include references (cited) to at least two reviews (or, better yet, include copies of the reviews in your research). IMPORTANT: Give a SOCIAL CONTEXT for the show. What was going on in the world that made it relevant? Why did THIS monster resonate, or fail to resonate, with its audience? SOURCES include: Reviews, historical and/or scholarly articles, performance reconstructions, theater biographies, and specialized periodicals, Productions stills or other relevant images. You will need 3 good sources! Here’s a sample of what a production history looks like: SAMPLE PRODUCTION HISTORY (not of a monster play) WHAT = A RAISIN IN THE SUN WHEN = 1959 – MARCH – 10 WHERE = U.S.A. – NEW YORK – ETHEL BARRYMORE THEATRE (BROADWAY) WHO = LORRAINE HANSBERRY (AUTHOR) LLOYD RICHARDS (DIRECTOR) RALPH ALSWANG (SETS AND LIGHTING) VIRGINIA VOLLAND (COSTUMES) SIDNEY POITIER (ACTOR – “WALTER”) RUBY DEE (ACTOR – “RUTH”) LOUIS GOSSETT (ACTOR – “GEORGE”) CRITICAL RECEPTION: Considered the first naturalistic play featuring African-American themes and characters, Hansberry’s semiautobiographical Raisin is still acknowledged as a stunningly ground-breaking play in American theatre history. The story is that of the Lee family, upwardly-mobile African-Americans who encounter tough challenges trying to move into an all-white neighborhood of Chicago. In light of a growing discontent and radicalism in the marginalized and disenfranchised black community of the era, who were being .

Sample of Assignment Les Demoiselles d'Avignon by Pablo Picasso has been called one of the most important works in the genesis of modern art by The Museum of Modern Art in a 2004 publication1 and the most influential work of art of the last 100 years in a 2007 article in Newsweek.2 Picasso created the work in 1907, the modern era. Determining the proper culture is difficult. He is considered a Spanish painter. There are clear Iberian and African influences presented in the painting. He painted it in Paris. The title references a brothel in Barcelona, Spain. So, for the most consistent classification, Spanish culture seems to be the most fitting. That said, this work is less about the cultural ties to that place, and more about someone reaching for a new direction in art. The social/psychological reference within the work has been interpreted by William Rubin in his book dedicated to the work as reflecting his deep-seated fear and loathing of the female body, which existed side by side with his craving for and ecstatic idealization of it.3 If this is true, then the way the figures are distorted would certainly support that idea. However, for two reasons this work is more than just a social comment from Picasso or a psychological manifestation of his attitude toward women and more one of development of a personal, and possibly intentional new style of presenting subject matter. The early rivalry between Matisse and Picasso is well documented. It has been suggested that Matisse's Bonheur de vivre (The Joy of Life) became a challenge for Picasso's creation of Les Damoiselles d'Avignon.4 The two seemed to be competing for who would be the leader in the pursuit of Modern Art. If this work were the last one by Picasso, it may not have had the lasting impact on the world of art that it enjoys. But in his subsequent work, and others, the fragmentation and representation of subject matter in planes that defy nature began with this work. It is a new aesthetic approach that forced the viewer at that time to reconsider many aspects of what art is and how space can be redefined. On one hand the subject matter could be viewed as a personal comment on brothels in general, but because it is clear that Picasso was in search for a new direction in modern art, it is clear that his main purpose was to influence the world of art with this new way of presenting subject matter. 1 Publication excerpt from The Museum of Modern Art, MoMA Highlights, New York: The Museum of Modern Art, revised 2004, originally published 1999, p. 64 2 http://www.newsweek.com/which-most-influential-work-art-last-100-years-102269 3 LES DEMOISELLES D'AVIGNON By William Rubin, Helene Seckel and Judith Cousins.

Jia Chen Professor Karlic Vis167 Term Project Artist Statement June 8, 2016 A Life· Alive Photography has become my passion in artistic expression since two years ago when I first touched a film camera. Observing, exploring, and analyzing society has also been another daily activity I like doing for at least a moment. When these two obsessions of mine started integrating simultaneously, I started to improve myself, identify myself, and find multiple facets of myself through this process. I used to make photograph about some “decisive moment” from urbanity and from my daily life to call the audience attention on the tiny moment one would typically not take a few seconds to think about. In the other words, I use photography as my words to describe how the world looks like from my perspective. My term project of social engagement is a work on a sequence of “California life” through my personal perspective based on my exploration of how California is for me and for the local people. During the process of this project, I have gained a clearer idea on what California looks like, what is the California dream for the local people. These processes have also transformed my personal California dream. I titled my series of these photographs simply “A Life · Alive ”, which simply means the demonstration of how life in California is conscious and alive. However, my photography series is diversiform. To be specific, I decided using landscape, typical mundane or symbolic objects, representative human figures, and the abstract or detail on partial description to present what my understanding of “California life” is and how my understanding changes. My photography work is always a way for me to express how I feel and what I see. Therefore, every single photograph in this project is directly from my personal view and is the documentary on the subject matter I chose. As for the non-human figures photography, I am mainly focusing on using different composition to frame them to speak out on what I think and how I feel. Additionally, the different times of day (day time or night time) to shoot the subject, and the tone of the entire imagery is the way I express my subjective view on my project. Also, I always focus on making my photography to bring my audience a different new way to see and ponder about what they used to see. In order to achieve this result, I focused on subject matter choice, creative composition, and lighting of every frame. Furthermore, I put my whole sequence in a specific order on two different levels. Firstly, I ordered my project in a geographic order from the west coastline to inland California based on the locations of the photographs. Then I ordered the sequence based on the photographs’ diurnal variation. The geographic order of the photographs present how I changed my personal view, feeling, and my dream of California, but the diurnal variation is to diversify the project itself. As .

Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.
