Project: Analysis of the official resolution to implement the IEPS tax, to sugar beverages
1. Project: Analysis of the official resolution to implement the IEPS tax, to sugar
beverages
1) What are the argument of the DOF article?
The high consumption of sugar-added beverages contributes to excess energy Intake and results in
the development of overweight and obesity in Mexico. To reduce the health issues the ministry of
health wants to introduce a tax on beverages that contain any type of added sugar.
2) Which consistencies and inconsistencies did you find in the document?
The identification of issue was good and also the initiative towards the control of the issue is very
good. But the approach towards its control is somewhat not effective.
3) Which biases or errors did you find in the arguments (bad arguments, fallacies, omissions,
false inferences and deceptive statistics)?
Bad Argument – Beverages cause the diabetes, overweight and obesity is correct but there is also
other foods involved and contribute to the health issues.
Fallacies – Implementing a tax by saying beverage is bad for health is false.
Omissions - Only ministry of health and government is included. There is no public opinion for this.
False inferences – Inducing Tax for beverages and also only for beverages. There is also other food
types that contribute to this issue.
Deceptive statistics – Ministry of health concluded only beverages cause overweight and this
misleading.
4) Can conclusions be drawn from the arguments?
The present conclusion is also correct but the issue is lacking the intellectual standards like clarity,
relevance, accuracy, precision, depth etc.,
5) Is the person's point of view derived from his or her research?
It looks like the research is made is not in depth. These argument lacks intellectual standards like
clarity, relevance, accuracy, precision, depth etc., more research could have been done before
arriving into the conclusion.
6) How are you ordering your own arguments (to avoid being unfocused)?
My argument is that, they have done less research on this issue. They could have identified many
other sources of this issue. Implementing critical thinking is suitable here. Elements, Intellectual
standards and virtues of the critical thinking is very important here. Implementing standards gives
clear picture of the issue and gives valid conclusions.
