Cause:
More than 1.4 million people suffer from food insecurity in Los Angeles County. Nearly
2 million of people living in Los Angeles are below poverty line. Hunger Action LA (HALA)’s mission is
to work to end hunger and promote healthy eating through community education, outreach, networking,
and empowerment of low income people to speak on issues that affect their lives directly.
On this night we honor those people who have been recognized by their peers in the community for their
work against hunger and poverty. See below for nomination form and description of past champions.
Please submit your nomination for a Champion Against Hunger and Poverty by Friday September
20.
Funding from this event will continue HALA’s major programs which have achieved these goals:
HALA’s Market Match Program at 12 farmer markets in Los Angeles County has increased
access to fresh produce for 6,000 low income families receiving CalFresh.
HALA has provided training on food policy and advocacy for hundreds of residents and nonprofit
staff in West LA, the San Fernando Valley, South LA, East LA, Downtown, Hollywood,
Koreatown and Long Beach, bringing policy change, such as helping to create a city ordinance
requiring departments to donate surplus food and fighting for a fair budget in Sacramento.
2.
HALA publishes the Peoples’ Guide to Welfare Health and Other Services, providing information
on how to access housing, cash assistance, food assistance, health care, assistance with car
expenses, tenants’ rights, immigration rights and other valuable resources. Nearly 160,000 copies
have been distributed in 2013 and funding is needed to continue publication.
