13. “ Twitter is the place where news
breaks.
”
That means you should be tweeting your reporting as it develops while
adhering to good verification practices.
The exception to this rule is if it’s a major investigative piece that is too complex to be released in tidbits without
greater context.
14. Twitter Best Practices
Don’t do the robot. Be human.
Be a source of information, not just a linker. Don’t just tweet when you want to share
a link.
Tweet what you’re working on, reading or interested in.
Whatever you do, make it blue.
Make your tweets standout with images. (horizontal ones)
Repeat tweets occasionally.
Tweet updates with the new information when a story develops.

16. Anything worth doing is worth
doing well…
THERE ARE A COUPLE THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
17. Do not use social media to bring people to your site. It helps but it’s not the point.
We use social media to expand our audience and meet them where they are.
Social media isn’t just an extra thing we do after we’ve done the real work of
reporting the story. It should be ingrained in each part of the process of a story or
project.
You can’t create high quality, engaging, community-building content “the
easy way” or the quick way.
Set goals for what you want out of your social community and create content
geared towards achieving that.
19. Tools
BESIDES THE BASIC APPS, THERE ARE A NUMBER OF SERVICES THAT CAN HELP
YOU BE MORE PRODUCTIVE

that you can take care of a lot of posts in one go
without having your eyes glued to the screen all day
long.

Facebook Interests
Facebook search
Facebook privacy settings
21. Not Everyone Wants To See Dog
Pictures In Their Feed. Even One’s As
Awesome As This One.
23. There is so much more to
talk about than we can
cover in an hour…
BUT IT’S WORTH THE TIME AND EFFORT TO TRY OUT PLATFORMS AND INVEST TIME
IN YOUR AUDIENCE.
AFTER ALL, THEY’RE INVESTING TIME IN YOU.
Notes de l'éditeur
This is an intro class to social media and hopefully a bit of Q and A so we can go over the issues that are keeping your from being able to use social media effectively.
Social media isn’t just a fad, something for the “Kids” or just self promotion, it’s a dominant way people receive news and information.
Twitter is a source of immediate information and news. Facebook is more about connecting on a social level.Google Plus is starting to pick up steam. As a social network it sort of falls short of what we’re used to doing, but in terms of impact on the rest of our digital existence, it is extremely important.Pinterest is useful as a repository for evergreen content. The trick for us as journalists is to take these platforms and examine their use and audience type and figure out how to present our content on those platforms. Because each one represents a new audience for us.

Because each one represents a new audience for us.
Here are the three platforms I’m going to cover more in depth but of course we can talk about the others too.Defining traitsFacebook is a traffic driver. People that can connect with your content will follow links to your site.Google Plus is in some ways more for your benefit than speaking to an audience on Google+. But what you do on their impacts how you appear on the other platforms and how easy it is for audiences to find you.Twitter is a news ticker. It’s a one-stop shop for getting a look at what is going on in the world.
Facebook is an emotional platform. People engage with content that strikes them on an emotional level. Give them something they can act on or react to. Facebook is one of the few social networks that does result in a significant portion of the audience that make it to your website. But you have to give them a good reason to go there. And an even better reason to stay, come back and also important – share you with their friends.
Profiles are for people. Pages are for groups, entities or businesses. You can create a Facebook event as a page and then act as a host with your profile so you get the benefits of having your event on a page and therefore public and also able to invite your social network as well.
You can be casual and more human on Facebook, but no snark. Keep it professional.
If you have gmail, you have Google+ whether you want it or not.
It’s a matter of visibility. Google is the largest search engine on the web and it’s tightly integrated with website from webmaster tools to analytics. What google thinks of a site, makes a huge difference in a site being displayed in results. Google is only going to continue to grow so getting ahead of the curve on this is very important.
Twitter packs a double punch of benefits to users. It’s a source of news and it’s a source of connecting with other people. One of the things I love most about Twitter is that I can connect with people that are outside of my social circle. Things like Twitter chats can really help you network and meet people you can learn from.
Twitter is the place where news breaks and if you want to build a Twitter audience that comes to you for information, you have to supplying information not just waiting until a story is done and tweeting a link to it.Don’t worry about the competition scooping you because they saw your tweets. Your tweets are the scoop. You’re already there.
Be smart. Be useful. Be nice. You don’t need snark to get attention. Share actual information, not just teasers, promos and headlines. Twitter has a low click-through rate compared to Facebook. People come there for information, not to be redirected elsewhere. But they will follow the link if you have a reputation as a source of good information. You are not just your job. Part of interviewing people often involves sharing a little of yourself. Social media works that way too. Being personable helps people trust you.Use hashtags and handles. Not insanely, but keep an eye out for opportunities to connect your tweets to conversations or other Twitter users when appropriate.Twitter almost always automatically displays photos which make your tweets so much more visible. Make the effort to tweet with an image. You can repeat tweets. Not verbatim, you do want to reword, but because there are different audiences, people who check in the morning or at night. Some people are on all day long. So if a thing is important you can tweet about it more than once. Twitter moves fast and most people don’t scroll back several hours worth.
Now all of this can sound pretty great. Building audiences and connecting with sources and getting content in front of new eyes. But this can take work.
We have radio listeners, web users, TV watchers and social media followers. These groups overlap but they are not the exact same groups of people. We go through all of this effort so that we’re addressing new and different audiences. I’ve gotten a lot of questions of how can we do social media so we don’t have to spend a lot of time on it. Or a question about social media comes prefaced with the statement about how busy people are, so how can social media be easier. The problem with that thinking is that it automatically places the value of social media as below that of everything else. It separates it from reporting and makes it the “one more thing” that people have to do when covering something. How can we possibly build social media communities if we don’t believe it matters. One thing that we can all agree on is that good content takes time to create. It takes strategy and a little work. If we’re going to build communities on our social media platforms then it will take some time and effort to do so. We can’t ask people to spend their time reading out posts and sharing our content without spending the time to make it a good experience.Do you want crowd sourced content? Then be asking questions of your audience. Are you looking for pageviews? Post your best content. Be a source of quality information. Are we wanting to be the go-to place? We do a combination of things by asking for audience participation, sharing our quality content and sharing outside content that we think has value for our audiences.
Actually following people. Your twitter account is useless if you aren’t following lots of accounts. Twitter lists will keep you sane. Especially when combined with something like Tweetdeck.Facebook interests is a way of grouping pages you like by topic so you can see a facebook feed built around that topic. Instead of interspersed with vacation photos and memes.Facebook search is incredibly powerful and revealing. You can find a lot of information here. Just make sure to verify it.Privacy settings. Take the time go through them one by one. It’s worth doing. This is how you keep your private life and your work life separate. For example, I’ve sorted all my friends into different categories of sharing so different groups of friends are subjected to stuff they don’t care about.
Like my dog, who’s awesome. But not many people want to see every single photo I take of him.

There is a paid version and a free version, but the free version allows you ten scheduled tweets. It’s also a smart sharing system that can help you pick the best time of day to post. It also allows scheduled tweets with images I think.Hootsuite is a dashboard that allows you to feed your social platforms into one place. Some people prefer this interface.Personally, I’m a huge fan of Tweetdeck. I have it on all day everyday at home and at work. It’s my news ticker, my scheduler and sorting system.Remember how I was talking about scheduling earlier? Go to tweetdeck.
