2.  Gain a better understanding of green
internship and fellowship programs in Hawaii
that expose students to career options
related to the environment
 Develop ideas on how to better integrate
existing programs and grow them to better
serve the needs of students and schools
 Raise awareness of the HELP and facilitate
discussion of ways in which to implement it

3. Hawai`i DLIR defines five core areas as green:
 Generate clean, renewable, sustainable
energy
 Reduce pollution and waste; conserve natural
resources; recycle
 Energy efficiency
 Educational, training and support of a green
workforce
 Natural, environmental-friendly production

4. The Hawai„i Department of Labor and
Industrial Relations‟ 2010 report on Hawaii‟s
green workforce identified green jobs in 203
occupations across 19 major industry groups.
The report forecasts a 26% increase in green
employment between 2010 and 2012, much
faster than the 1% increase projected for
statewide employment.

7. Integrate EE in K-12 for Environmental
Literacy
Objective 3:
 Increase the availability of
green/sustainability career education for
students, starting from elementary school

8. Actions:
 Work with HIDOE to embed sustainability into
all existing career pathways
 Support and expand programs that expose
students to green/sustainability careers so
that all students have access to such
programs
 Partner with UH and other institutions of
higher education to gain role models and
opportunities to learn about sustainability

9. Integrate EE in K-12 for Environmental
Literacy
Objective 5:
 Develop partnerships with government
agencies, nonprofit organizations and
businesses that are willing to work with
schools and young people.

10. Actions:
 Encourage the development of more EE based
service learning opportunities with partners
 Utilize HEEA‟s network of island representatives
to conduct outreach to government agencies,
nonprofit organizations and businesses to inform
them of school needs in their areas.
 Seek hands-on projects with faculty and
graduate students from UH and other institutions
of higher learning that will engage youth in real-
life research.
 Create “case studies” of effective partnership
and post them on HEEA‟s website

11. Provide Sustainable Funding for
Environmental Literacy
Objective 3
 Collaborate with partners in the nonprofit
sector, business, and government to provide
at least $500,000 in funding for new paid
internship or mentorship programs
throughout the state every summer.
