• Act 1 should have the same lighting throughout
• Need to create setting for play.

• Since scene 1 takes place in an orchard.
• Provide less visibility for this scene as it is Brutus conspiring.
• Dim white light with green to add to the garden effect
• Dimmed light will add to the effect of Brutus plotting

• Scene 2 takes place in Caesar’s house
• Want to show a little time has passed so darkness in the background
illuminated by candle light that will still provide visibility and set a
mood.
• Caesar still continuing his routine’s as he does not know what plans are being
set in motion against him.

• Want to provide focus in this scene, as Artemidorus is the only
character to appear in this scene.
• No lights except for a spotlight putting emphasis on Artemidorus
• For the next scene I want to add a few more spotlights as it takes
place on the same street near Brutus’s house.
• Idea is provide additional focus on all characters in the scene. Since it takes
place at the same time as the previous scene it is crucial to show that
relatively no time has passed.
26. Lighting Act 3
• Most critical point for lighting in the play in my opinion.
• Scene 1 will start with light on the outside as everyone enters, but
shortly afterward the light will dim
• The lights will stay dim until Brutus
stabs Caesar first, at that point the
light will change to a
blood red color.

• The next scene will progress back to daylight at the beginning of the
scene.
• Point is to signify through their dark deed they have brought light back to the
republic.
• Lighting will stay the same throughout the remainder of the act.

• Return to a house with orange light in the background to signify that
the day is coming to an end.
• Added element of candle light and purple
• Purple to signify Octavian as royalty.

• Transition to Brutus’s tent will have the inside dimmed with light
leaking in through the tent flaps
• A darkened mood with a little light to signify stress of their “rebellion”
against Caesar.
30. Lighting Act 5
• The scene 1 takes place on the plains of Philippi.
• White light to signify daylight with a hint of purple on Octavius and his army
to signify not only his royalty but also his claim as the second emperor of
Rome.
• When Brutus and the rest enter into the scene, a hint of blue placed on
Brutus, Cassius and their army to signify their loyalty to the Roman Republic.

• Scenes 2 through 5 all take place on the same battlefield
• In scene 2 place white light with a light blue (different from the dark blue
used for loyalty earlier) to signify hope
• Scene 3 will use the same as scene 2
• Scene 4 will drop the light blue and keep the white for daylight
• Scene 5 will add a hint of yellow to signify a loss of hope. When Brutus runs
his sword through himself there will be a flash of red that transitions to
purple as Octavian enters.
