1 Introduction
1.1 These accreditation guidelines are for programme leaders, course
development teams and academic staff in higher educational institutions
who are considering the requirement for HKIBIM course accreditation.
1.2 This document gives you all the information you need to accredit your
degree programme.
2 About the Hong Kong Institute of Building Information Modelling
2.1 “THE HONG KONG INSTITUTE OF BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING”
香港建築信息模擬學會 (HKIBIM) was established in Jan 2009.
2.2 Currently, HKIBIM have over 500 members with at least 270 Professional
Members and 200 Associates members represent the BIM practitioners in
Hong Kong and act as a distinctive group for the construction industry.
2.3 We are BIM practitioners’ organization and share the common belief that
BIM can enrich our building design and construction in many different
ways. We are fully devoted to the development of BIM and the
implementation of BIM in our projects. That is why we come together to
form the institute and in becomes a recognized platform to expedite the
process.
2.4 The objects of the Institute are:
2.4.1 To uphold and advance the standard of competence for the profession
and to promote the interests and recognition of its members within
the industry and community;
2.4.2 The Institute works on the behalf of its members:
i. To promote and advance the general education, understanding,
appreciation and interest of and in building information
modelling management;
ii. To foster general awareness, understanding and concerted
efforts in the community towards the advancement of the
Objects and the issues thereof;
iii. To establish and advance standards of building information
management practice in the industry.
iv. To establish links with relevant institutes of tertiary education,
Government Bureaus/Departments, Statutory bodies and other
organizations;
v. To research, facilitate and promote the means of better
management of building information for improving

communication, co-ordination, management, productivity,
delivery time, cost, and quality throughout the whole building
life cycle;
vi. To provide guidance on careers in building information
management profession.
3 Grades of Membership
3.1 Membership of the Institute shall comprise:
3.1.1 Professional Member;
3.1.2 Associate Member;
3.1.3 Student/Graduate Member.
3.2 The Professional Grade consisting of the follows type: -
3.2.1 Degree or above in relation to Building, Construction and Engineering,
or as recognized by the HKIBIM Board from time to time; and
3.2.2 Min. 2 year experience in BIM application or management as
recognized by the Board from time to time.
3.3 The Associate Grade consisting of the follow types:-
3.3.1 Certificate or above in relation to BIM which the course shall lead by
the professional grade of HKIBIM and recognized by the HKIBIM Board
from time to time; and
3.3.2 Minimum 1 year experience in BIM application or management as
recognized by the Board from time to time.
4 Why accredit your programme with HKIBIM
4.1 As a pre-requisite to become an Associate Member (AHKIBM) or a
Professional Member (MHKIBIM), applicant must have the required
education attainments and BIM training.
4.2 The aim of the Accreditation has two purposes:
4.2.1 to acknowledge a qualification awarded for Programme or course
meets the HKIBIM Board requirement and recognize as the academic
qualification that satisfy the membership assessment criteria of the
HKIBIM membership admission.
4.2.2 To signify the graduates of qualification awarded for a Programme or
course has included the required intended learning outcomes that
cover the BIM training required as part of the requirement of the
membership application.

4.3 By accrediting your programme or course, it prepares your students for a
career of BIM, equipping them with the right qualification to become a
BIM Manager.
4.4 The accreditation also certifies the Programme or course have equipped
with the right facilities and resources to provide a sustainable BIM training
environment.
5 Scope of Accreditation
5.1 In general, only Architecture, Building, Construction Civil Engineering and
other Engineering related Programmes or courses will be accredited.
5.2 The Programme or Courses should be listed in the Qualification Register
and the level of the qualification should be at least of QF Level 4 of the
Qualifications Framework.
5.3 For other courses including in-house training, online course, massive open
online course (MOOC), webinar, conference, workshop or seminar that do
not lead to any qualification comparable to QF Level 4 or without a well-
established quality assurance mechanism or validation standards but
offered by a recognized education establishment, HKIBIM will only
consider granting “Support” in lieu of accredit status.
6 Accreditation Process
6.1 Send in the submission of intent for accreditation, accompanied by full
supporting documentation including programme titles, programmes
details, academic and quality procedures.
6.2 There should be a separate statement addressing the BIM related teaching
and learning resources (BIM Modules document, Hardware and software),
staffing including and staff development, BIM related activities (Research,
promotion, etc.).
6.3 A working group with minimum 3 HKIBIM professional members including
a HKIBIM Board member as panel chairman will be appointed by the
HKIBIM Board to review and feedback on the submitted documentation.
6.4 Any further supporting information will be requested for submission.
6.5 A site visit, if deems necessary, will be arranged to verify the resources and
meet members of the Programme or course team, students or alumnus.
6.6 Following the visit feedback will be provided and a proposed decision given
6.7 Once accreditation has been awarded, a certificate issued. Accreditation is
valid for 5 years, after this time a re-application will be required

6.8 Upon confirmation, an entry of the accredited programme / course will be
placed on the HKIBIM website with a link to the Academic Institutions
website.
7 Periodic Review
7.1 To allow HKIBIM to keep update of the status and development of the
accredited courses, Programme or course team is required to update the
following information annually upon request by HKIBIM:
7.1.1 Statistics such as latest number of new students and graduates;
7.1.2 Update of curriculum and BIM related development (if any);
7.1.3 Staff development plan and record (Optional);
7.1.4 Other relevant information.
8 Application for “Support”
8.1 For course as described in Para 5.3, course provider is required to submit
details of the course to HKIBIM for consideration.
9 Fees and cost
9.1 The accreditation involves the following administration fees:
9.1.1 an application fee of HK$3,000 related to the costs associated with
processing the application submission;
9.1.2 a visit fee related to the costs associated with an approval visit; and
9.1.3 an administration fee related to the costs associated with the annual
monitoring and review.
9.2 The amounts of fees will vary depending on the number of students and
may be waived at the discretion of HKIBIM.
