Napier earthquake

2. OnFebruary 3, 1931 a 7.8 magnitude
earthquake shocked the towns of Hawkes
Bay, Napier and Hastings. It was 20Km
north-west of Napier
256 people died.
Itstarted as a violent shock at 10:48am
and a second shock soon after rocked
Hawkes Bay for nearly 3 minutes and
nearly all hit towns turned to large clouds
of dust making it hard for people to
breathe.
3. Afterthe earthquake the regional
GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in
New Zealand dropped by 45%. Soon
after tourists started to go to Napier
to look at the damage, even though
the Great Depression was still
happening.
4. What?- A 7.8 earthquake hit Hawkes Bay and
surrounding areas.
When?- February 3 1931 10:48am
Why?- Because the tectonic plates moved and
created an earthquake
7. A tanker at sea felt the vibration and the
captain and his crew looked over toward
Napier to see the once loved city engulfed by
a massive cloud of dust.
He set course toward Napier to find out
what happened. To his dismay he found the
city had fallen into mother natures hands
