ALI BUKAR AHMAD
RCE KANO, NIGERIA
 A Latin word from “com” and “laborare” which
simple means “to work together”
 1- A process through which parties who see
different aspects of a problem can constructively
explore their differences and search for solutions
that go beyond their own limited vision of what is
possible”
 2- Collaboration is process where two or more
people or organization work together to achieve
or realized shared goals, with a deep collective,
determination, an intriguing endeavour that is
creative in nature through sharing of knowledge,
resources, skills, learning and building
consensus.
 Collaborations and partnership within the
RCEs and the “outside” are fundamental basis
for their existence
 Increasing opportunities to learn and adopt
new skills
 Securing access to resources
 Sharing risks and costs
 The ability to respond rapidly to changing
needs of the community
 Gaining input from more or different
members of the community
 There are different types of collaboration and partnership among
the RCE’s , some of which are:
 1-Intra- RCE collaborations and partnership: This takes place
between or among a particular RCE member organizations.
 2-Inter-RCEs’ C collaboration and partnership: This type is
between one RCE and another RCE. It may be within the same
country, continental region, continent or intercontinental.
 3-Multi-RCEs’ collaboration and partnership: This type takes
place among multiple RCEs within a common purpose. It may be
among RCEs in the same continent, or RCEs from different
continents or even RCEs form within a country.
 4-Interlocution Collaboration and partnership: This takes place
between an RCE or group of RCEs and another institutions or
international organizations that are not any RCE members but
partners in the journey to sustainable development, such as
UNDP. UNESCO, Toyota, ect.
 A partnership that is purported: relationship
between/among RCEs to pursue collective
benefit
 A partnership that is committed to pursuing
an individual RCEs goal with the help of
another RCEs for sustainable development
 In terms of benefits, collaboration and partnership can be
divided into three categories:
 Individual benefit: In this type only on RCE will benefit the other
will only be helping in the spirit of Ubuntu. There will be no real
benefit but virtual. The Helping RCE may not even have a similar
problem but feels it has the capacity to overcome it hence the
collaboration and partnership . There may be benefit of working
it out beyond boundaries, experience and new technique but not
from the subject of C&P.
 Mutual benefit: Both RCEs involved benefit from the C&P . The
both have identical situation of the C&P subject and will benefit
from the outcome in a similar or different ways
 General benefit; This C&P among / between the RCEs is aimed at
transforming the society/ community or the whole world . It may
benefit the RCEs but the big chunk of the benefit will go to the
society.
 Identify a partner among the RCEs with a similar project/programmes
 Study the RCE’s practices and try to adapt or create correlation with your s
 Draft a proposal and background materials that explains reasons for the partnerships which
includes but not limited to;
 Describe community-level indicators you will utilize - indicate the levels (incidence or
prevalence) of behaviors or outcomes that relate to your goal or area of concern.
 Explain how often it occurs in the community.
 illustrate how many people are affected by it and to what severity.
 Describe other past or current attempts to bring about change.
 Explain the possible impact and/or consequences of achieving your goal.
 Identify available resources and relationships that will be needed to bring about change.
 Predict what financial and personnel resources will be needed to accomplish the goal. What
resources are already available and which will need to be obtained?
 h-Name leaders in the community. Who is influential in the community and how can your
collaborative partnership build a relationship with them?
 Describe how networks are organized within the community and how you plan on utilizing
them to intervene in the community.
 Research the community projects currently in progress. What does this tell you about what the
community sees as valuable and what clues does this provide that might help you be
successful?
 Determine who the target populations are that you most want to affect and those in your
community whose actions can influence them, either directly or indirectly.
 Communicate to the identified RCE and issue a partnership invitation.
 Map out methodology for the partnership (generate set of ground rules)
 Prepare to deal with uncertainties
 Be as transparent as possible
 Consider partner’s background , culture, values and ethics
 Involve the community in defining the issues and identifying the partners
 Create way to meaningful involvement
 Have everyone participate in naming the partnership
 Always begin by building relationship and establish trust and credibility
 Develop relationships based on mutual trust and respect
 Reinforce shared leadership in the execution of the project/programme
 Acknowledge the difference between the community input and active community
involvement
 Beware that partnership and collaboration face different challenges at different
stages of it development
 Encourage upstream thinking and action on broader issues
 Sensitize your RCE on experiencing internal transition that may influence their
involvement in the partnership

The types of collaboration and partnership boundaries are
characterizes with numerous barriers because of cultures, distances
and history.
Collaborations and partnerships among the RCEs are possible after
the following platforms are managed and same boundaries
overcome
 Linguistic barriers
 Physical barriers
 Psychological barriers
 Ethics
 Compositions
The degree of openness in the system is a critical factor among the
RCEs
 At the beginning, RCEs must arrive at the shared definition of
subject of collaboration and partnership, including how it relates
to the interdependence of various stakeholders
 All RCEs involved must accept and acknowledge the legitimacy of
the other participant
 Other stakeholder whose involvement may be necessary fro the
success of the subject of C&P must be identified and included
 The RCEs must determine the types of resources needed for the
C&P to start and proceed.
 They must analyze the situation and the subject
 Diagnose the key issues involved
 Determine the desired outcome
 Design strategy to achieve the vision and goal of C&P
 Draw a timetable for the strategy
 And lastly be able to measure and evaluate the outcome
Different goals different
dreams
Shared goals, collective effort
,accomplished dreams
 Establishing ground rules
 Organize sub-groups
 Set the C&P agenda
 Undertake joint information search to
establish and consider the essential facts of
the subject involved..
 Explore the advantage and the disadvantages
of various alternatives and reaching
agreement setting for course of action
Unplanned collaboration Planned collaboration
 Many ideas grow better when transplanted into
another mind than the one where they sprang
up- Oliver Wendell Homes
 And
 We need to develop and disseminate an entire
new paradigm and practice of collaboration that
supersedes the traditional silos that have divided
enterprises, governments, philanthropies and
private enterprises for decades and replace it
with networks of partnerships working together
to create a globally prosperous world.-Simon

Collaboration and partnerships among RCEs, David Ongare and Ali Bukar Ahmad

  • 1. BY ALI BUKAR AHMAD RCE KANO, NIGERIA
  • 2.  A Latin word from “com” and “laborare” which simple means “to work together”  1- A process through which parties who see different aspects of a problem can constructively explore their differences and search for solutions that go beyond their own limited vision of what is possible”  2- Collaboration is process where two or more people or organization work together to achieve or realized shared goals, with a deep collective, determination, an intriguing endeavour that is creative in nature through sharing of knowledge, resources, skills, learning and building consensus.
  • 3.
  • 4.  Collaborations and partnership within the RCEs and the “outside” are fundamental basis for their existence
  • 5.  Increasing opportunities to learn and adopt new skills  Securing access to resources  Sharing risks and costs  The ability to respond rapidly to changing needs of the community  Gaining input from more or different members of the community
  • 6.  There are different types of collaboration and partnership among the RCE’s , some of which are:  1-Intra- RCE collaborations and partnership: This takes place between or among a particular RCE member organizations.  2-Inter-RCEs’ C collaboration and partnership: This type is between one RCE and another RCE. It may be within the same country, continental region, continent or intercontinental.  3-Multi-RCEs’ collaboration and partnership: This type takes place among multiple RCEs within a common purpose. It may be among RCEs in the same continent, or RCEs from different continents or even RCEs form within a country.  4-Interlocution Collaboration and partnership: This takes place between an RCE or group of RCEs and another institutions or international organizations that are not any RCE members but partners in the journey to sustainable development, such as UNDP. UNESCO, Toyota, ect.
  • 7.  A partnership that is purported: relationship between/among RCEs to pursue collective benefit  A partnership that is committed to pursuing an individual RCEs goal with the help of another RCEs for sustainable development
  • 8.  In terms of benefits, collaboration and partnership can be divided into three categories:  Individual benefit: In this type only on RCE will benefit the other will only be helping in the spirit of Ubuntu. There will be no real benefit but virtual. The Helping RCE may not even have a similar problem but feels it has the capacity to overcome it hence the collaboration and partnership . There may be benefit of working it out beyond boundaries, experience and new technique but not from the subject of C&P.  Mutual benefit: Both RCEs involved benefit from the C&P . The both have identical situation of the C&P subject and will benefit from the outcome in a similar or different ways  General benefit; This C&P among / between the RCEs is aimed at transforming the society/ community or the whole world . It may benefit the RCEs but the big chunk of the benefit will go to the society.
  • 9.  Identify a partner among the RCEs with a similar project/programmes  Study the RCE’s practices and try to adapt or create correlation with your s  Draft a proposal and background materials that explains reasons for the partnerships which includes but not limited to;  Describe community-level indicators you will utilize - indicate the levels (incidence or prevalence) of behaviors or outcomes that relate to your goal or area of concern. What resources are already available and which will need to be obtained?  h-Name leaders in the community. Who is influential in the community and how can your collaborative partnership build a relationship with them?  Describe how networks are organized within the community and how you plan on utilizing them to intervene in the community.  Research the community projects currently in progress. What does this tell you about what the community sees as valuable and what clues does this provide that might help you be successful?  Determine who the target populations are that you most want to affect and those in your community whose actions can influence them, either directly or indirectly.  Communicate to the identified RCE and issue a partnership invitation.
  • 10.  Map out methodology for the partnership (generate set of ground rules)  Prepare to deal with uncertainties  Be as transparent as possible  Consider partner’s background , culture, values and ethics  Involve the community in defining the issues and identifying the partners  Create way to meaningful involvement  Have everyone participate in naming the partnership  Always begin by building relationship and establish trust and credibility  Develop relationships based on mutual trust and respect  Reinforce shared leadership in the execution of the project/programme  Acknowledge the difference between the community input and active community involvement  Beware that partnership and collaboration face different challenges at different stages of it development  Encourage upstream thinking and action on broader issues  Sensitize your RCE on experiencing internal transition that may influence their involvement in the partnership 
  • 11. The types of collaboration and partnership boundaries are characterizes with numerous barriers because of cultures, distances and history. Collaborations and partnerships among the RCEs are possible after the following platforms are managed and same boundaries overcome  Linguistic barriers  Physical barriers  Psychological barriers  Ethics  Compositions The degree of openness in the system is a critical factor among the RCEs
  • 12.  At the beginning, RCEs must arrive at the shared definition of subject of collaboration and partnership, including how it relates to the interdependence of various stakeholders  All RCEs involved must accept and acknowledge the legitimacy of the other participant  Other stakeholder whose involvement may be necessary fro the success of the subject of C&P must be identified and included  The RCEs must determine the types of resources needed for the C&P to start and proceed.  They must analyze the situation and the subject  Diagnose the key issues involved  Determine the desired outcome  Design strategy to achieve the vision and goal of C&P  Draw a timetable for the strategy  And lastly be able to measure and evaluate the outcome
  • 13. Different goals different dreams Shared goals, collective effort ,accomplished dreams
  • 14.  Establishing ground rules  Organize sub-groups  Set the C&P agenda  Undertake joint information search to establish and consider the essential facts of the subject involved..  Explore the advantage and the disadvantages of various alternatives and reaching agreement setting for course of action
  • 16.  Many ideas grow better when transplanted into another mind than the one where they sprang up- Oliver Wendell Homes  And  We need to develop and disseminate an entire new paradigm and practice of collaboration that supersedes the traditional silos that have divided enterprises, governments, philanthropies and private enterprises for decades and replace it with networks of partnerships working together to create a globally prosperous world.-Simon Mainwaring
