Waste Management in Kiambu
County, Kenya
By
RCE Greater Nairobi
And
County Government of Kiambu
2. TITLE OF THE PROJECT
Environmental Education Programme for
Integrated Solid Waste Management in
Kiambu County, Kenya
3. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROJECT AREA
Population – 1,623,282
Area – 2,449 Km2
There is steady increase in population and
urbanization leading to higher consumption of
natural resources and hence the resultant
generation of wastes.
Kiambu County produces over 900 tonnes of
solid waste per day. Of this, 70% of the waste is
collected and taken to the approved dumping
sites.
The rest is not collected and thus constitutes a
public eyesore and a public health challenge.
4. CHALLENGES THE PROJECT IS ADDRESSING
Insufficient public awareness and enforcement
of legislation is a hindrance to sustainable
solid waste management.
Understaffing and a lack of skilled staff in
waste management.
Solid waste is often dumped haphazardly in
urban open spaces.
Indiscriminate burning of plastic and other
wastes produces very toxic fumes which are
very harmful to human beings and the
environment.
Uncontrolled dumpsites are some of the major
sources of greenhouse gases contributing to
global climate change.
5. RATIONALE
There is indiscriminate disposal of waste
A culture of willful segregation of waste by
producers is lacking.
The methods of transporting the waste as
well as disposing it are not up to standard.
Most of the solid waste that is generated is
made of non-biodegradable materials
The programme will boost the effect of the
already formulated policy and legislative
initiatives on solid waste management
11. GOAL OF THE PROJECT
To transform the mindset and perception of the
Citizens of Kiambu County on sustainable
management of solid waste from cradle to
grave, enhance a clean county environment,
restore public health and trigger sustainable
income generation scheme through building an
economic enterprise around solid waste by
2022

16. KEY MESSAGE ABOUT THE PROJECT
The continued problem of waste management in
urban areas requires serious intervention.
The problem has been escalating because of
population growth, production and consumption and
economic prosperity.
SDG 12 – Emphasises responsible consumption and
production.
The Kenyan constitution in article 42 – Emphasises
that every person has the right to a clean and healthy
environment.
This includes the right to have the environment
protected for the benefit of present and future
generations through legislative and other measures
including education.
