1. For my FMP, I have created a 36-page feminist fanzine which focuses on the topic of
role models. I chose this topic as it was something that I was really interested and it was
very personal to me. My Project is targeted at females aged 16-26, I wanted to aimit at any
race or religion as well as marital status. I would say that my target audience would fit into
the Type A psychographic. This is when they will be concerned about how their actions
effect the world around them. They want to make the world a better place and they will
respond to messages about making a difference to society.
When it came to my research I wanted to make sure I was making a product which
people would read, I wanted to know what features they wanted to see as well as what
front cover they preferred the most. I did a survey to see what my target audience had to
say about the topic. I had 11 individual responses who matched the age range of my target
audience. I think my survey could have been better as more males answered it then females
but I think with the responses I got anyway it was helpful. I think the question which helped
me out the most was the front cover question as it showed me what style of front cover my
audience wanted.
I think the existing products which I looked at also helped when it came to my
production as it helped me know what features were popular. When I started looking at
pre-existing products, I looked at the feminist fanzines/magazines which were most popular.
I noticed most of the double page spreads had a plain white background so the text and
images stood out more. The front covers also seemed very bold and bright with different
colours. I wanted to have a bright and bold front cover but an aesthetic double page
spreads inside. This is something that my peer feedback brought up, on one of the
feedbacks which I received commented on having a background to some of the pages. I took
this into account and added a background to my text so it still stood out but it wouldn’t look
out of place. I also had two people comment on the layout of the text as it did look really
bulky and messy. To improve I made sure all my articles were lined up equal distance
between each column as well as making sure they all end of the same line.
I think keeping it relevant to my audience was initially quite hard as I had to keep
editing my work, to make sure it matched the style which would attract the audience. As
you can see from the front cover, I made quite a few edits, when I first made the front
cover, I asked some people whether they could tell who the celebrities were. Everyone
knew who they were but when it came to Beyoncé, they didn’t recognise her. This gave me
a clear indication that I needed to draw her again. I wanted the contents page to stand out
as well, my first draft was very messy and I felt as though the audience wouldn’t be
attracted to it as the colours weren’t very tasteful and it wasn’t aesthetic. But my last draft,
seemed much more aesthetic and tidy.
I really like the product which I have created, I think all the colours match and there
is a reoccurring theme on most of the illustrations. I think the only thing I would have liked
to improve would be that I wanted to add more features and interviews but with the time I
had I wasn’t able to do this. Another thing which I don’t really like about my fanzine is on
some of the double page spreads I think the text looks bulky and untidy. I think my
favourite thing about my final project is the front and back cover. I really like how they
match and don’t look too forced with the theme of the illustrations.
I have decided to get my fanzine professionally printed so I can display it at different
fanzine events and shops. The process of getting it printed was quite confusing but once I
had created a 3mm bleed it got easier. I am currently looking into getting into the York
fanzine event in August as well as getting it into a fanzine shop in York. I have created an
2. Instagram page and added my fanzine onto the website issuu to try get it out there and for
people to see my art work.
Overall, I am very happy with my final project as I think it is very personal to me, I have put a
lot of hard work into it and I think it has paid off with the finished product.
