3. Common cause of fever in
children
Neonates (less than 28 days)
• 3% serious bacterial infection (Bacterial meningitis
most common)
• Infection (in first 7 days) secondary to vertical
transmission
• Infection (after first 7 days) – community acquired
or hospital acquired
Young infants (28-60 days)
• 6-10% bacterial infection(most often UTI)

4. Common cause of fever in
children
Children (3 months to 3 years)
• >38C(rectal) - bacterial infection (4.1-25.1%)
• >38.5C(rectal) – occult bacteremia (2-4%)
(streptococcus pneumonia > Haemophilus influenza
type b)
• Children <1 yo – Escherichia coli (associated with UTI)
• Blood stream infection – Staphylococcus aureus
(associated with skin, soft tissues or musculoskeletal
infection)
• Salmonella sp., Neisseria meningitides and S. pyogenes

• Term (preterm, term, post-date)? Mention the child
delivered at how many week of pregnancy.
• Method of delivery (spontaneous vaginal delivery,
caesarean-section, assisted delivery like
vacuum/forcep)?
• Birth weight, born at hospital/home?
• Any ante/intra/postpartum complication – Talk
about mother’s illness first if there is any(e.g.
hypertension in pregnancy, DM in pregnancy, etc.);
any prolonged labour, birth asphyxia, Neonatal
Jaundice, intubated/ventilated after birth?
