EXT. OUTSIDE A CAFE - DAY1 1
Camera moves from busy road with traffic noise to a cafe
adjacent to it and moves towards three people, who are
approaching it.
A waiter standing at the cafe sees the notification in
English, for a BA, English Literature course in a degree
college on a paper and frowns. Shyam sees him through with an
understanding look.
The waiter goes into the cafe throwing away the paper after
folding it hastily.
Three friends Ramesh, Friend1, Friend2 walk on the pavement
chit chatting just nearing a cafe.
They enter the cafe.
CUT TO:
INT. INSIDE CAFE - DAY2 2
A glass full of water is placed ‘hastily’ on a table with
loud sound before a customer, who gets a little stunned.
The waiter gives a casual look and just stands there,
supposedly asking him for the order.
CUSTOMER
(realizing that he has to
order)
One tea.
The waiter goes inside to bring the order.
WAITER
(in the background)
One tea.
The Customer takes a sip of water as the camera pans towards
the three friends.
They sit at a table, little far from the earlier one.
MATCH CUT TO:
INT. INSIDE CAFE - DAY3 3
A person (Shyam) in ordinary clothes, walks towards the table
casually.
RAMESH
(to Shyam, a little
hastily)
Hey, bring us some water man
Shyam, whom Ramesh has asked for water sees the water jug on
the side bench and brings it to the table.
RAMESH (CONT’D)
(to Shyam supposedly
ordering tea)
Give us three...
As soon as he places the jug, Shyam goes to a near by table
and sits.
RAMESH (CONT’D)
Tea and...
(stops as Shyam ignores
him)
The three look surprised for a split second and realizes that
Shyam is not a waiter.
The real waiter comes near both the tables.
RAMESH (CONT’D)
Give us three Tea...
The waiter turns to Shyam with his still scornful face.
SHYAM
One Tea for me please...
The waiter goes inside.
WAITER
(in the background)
Four tea.
RAMESH
(to Shyam)
Extremely Sorry boss...,
(with a little sudden
instinctive voice)
Are you single?
Shyam looks confused about what was Ramesh asking for.
RAMESH (CONT’D)
I mean, have you come alone?
2.
RAMESH’S FRIEND
Da, he has ordered one Tea, so
obviously..
THREE FRIENDS
Why don’t you join us, Please join
us..
Ramesh shows him the unoccupied seat at their table.
Shyam accepts and sits opposite Ramesh with a little
awkwardness.
MATCH CUT TO:
INT. INSIDE CAFE - DAY4 4
RAMESH
Really sorry about that..
SHYAM
That’s okay. Relax. I just brought
it on my way here.
RAMESH
Ya, ya, I know, but still, It
wasn’t right. I shouldn’t have
asked you. I am really sorry...
Shyam takes a thoughtful long look at Ramesh like stopping
himself from saying something.
RAMESH (CONT’D)
(confusedly)
What?
SHYAM
Well, Why are you sorry, exactly?
The waiter goes across the table with a tea cup to serve the
customer in front and listens the conversation.
RAMESH
(thoughtful at first)
Okay... Hmm... Because I asked you
to do bring me water, when it
wasn’t your job?
SHYAM
Can’t you ask anyone for a jug
water?
3.
RAMESH
Ya, but I mistook you for a waiter,
so?
The waiter(who can understand English), now that he got
interested in the conversation, focuses on them, while
passing them by.
(The conversation goes on
even as the waiter do
these things.)
He watches that the cups, to serve them, are still being
filled.
So, he stops behind them at a distance and listens on.
SHYAM
So, what? Is it that disrespectful
to mistake someone for a waiter?
RAMESH
I guess so.. Don’t you?
SHYAM
(to other two guys)
What do you think?
FRIEND1
I would be looking at myself in the
mirror or better, in a selfie, if I
was mistaken for a waiter.
SHYAM
Hmm..
FRIEND1
Hey, I meant no offence to you...
Of course..
SHYAM
(to Friend1)
Hmm...
(to Friend2)
what about you?
FRIEND2
I wouldn’t like it either, I
think...
SHYAM
Hmm, OK. Excuse me for a second...

INT. INSIDE CAFE - DAY5 5
Shyam raises from his seat, puts the notification paper in
the waiter’s hands, goes near the owner sitting at the
counter.
As the owner gives a confusing look, Shyam goes near the
kitchen window, takes the tray with the four tea cups.
RAMESH
What the hell is he doing?
Shyam passes the waiter, who is still watching him
astonished, and places the cups on the table as three guys,
watches on him and each other’s faces, with amusement.
He gives the tray to the waiter, gives him a assuring nod
looking at the piece of paper in his hand, and returns back
to his seat.
RAMESH (CONT’D)
Do you really have to do this?
SHYAM
(sarcastically)
Well, I did serve you guys water,
why not tea also? I guess that
makes me your waiter this morning.
RAMESH
What’s your point in all this?
The waiter opens the paper and finds the notification, and
looks on to the conversation.
SHYAM
There is no point in me or anyone
doing this, that’s the point.
RAMESH
Come again...
SHYAM
See, By thinking that, mistaking me
for a waiter is disrespecting me,
you are actually disrespecting hard
earning honest individuals. You, or
should I say, most of us (looking
at other friends), still feel that
a waiter is a lesser being, and
most probably, that’s where the
sorry has come from.
5.
Ramesh takes a quick glance at the waiter, who gives a bright
look back at him.
RAMESH
Well, you certainly seem to have a
valid point there. But, I might
also have said it because, any
other guy in your place, might have
expected, or even demanded for an
apology, you see.
SHYAM
(starts but abruptly stops
as Ramesh continues)
Which could have proved the same
thing about him, that ..
RAMESH
(cutting off Shyam and
catching on the dialogue)
That he would also be having the
same sense about a waiter... hmm, I
see that...
SHYAM
Exactly...
(takes a sip from the cup)
You see, Nobody aspires to be a
waiter and(looking at the waiter)No
body should remain as one (another
sip). So, why should it stop us
from respecting just another human
being, who is doing his/her job,
any job (after taking one more long
sip). So, tell me now, do you
really need to apologize...
Ramesh then lifts his cup and holds it there saying cheers to
Shyam and the waiter standing beside them.
RAMESH
I guess not...
The other two also do the same and have their Tea.
The waiter watches at them and at the paper, folds it
carefully and puts it in his pocket.
They complete their tea. Ramesh and Shyam pays the waiter.
Shyam pats on the waiter’s shoulder, as they leave.
As a customer arrives and sits, he takes a glass of water and
places it slowly in front of the customer.
6.
WAITER
What can I bring you?
CUSTOMER
One tea
WAITER
(shouts)
One tea
Shyam stares at the four guys leaving, with a look of fresh
determination, walking out slowly behind them till the end of
the floor.
CUT TO:
EXT. AT THE CAFE ENTRANCE - DAY
Shyam, Ramesh and his friends start walking out of cafe.
RAMESH
So, what do you do?
SHYAM
(after a thinking look and
a moment)
I am between jobs, I used to be a
waiter, but I got a better job now.
Camera stops following them out and stops on the waiter’s
face, who was behind them as they pass, with a fluttering
newspaper(in the corner of the camera) on the stand.
RAMESH
(in the background)
Well, we are in IT, which would be
the first guess of any one. Anyway,
Nice meeting you.
SHYAM
(in the background)
Nice meeting you guys too.
The focus shifts from the brightly inspired waiter on to the
Newspaper that has Shyam’s picture and a headline, “Hotel
waiter tops the Civils.”
FADE OUT.
