  • 3. 1 Letter from the Minister Dear Friends, What a lovely summer we have enjoyed. The magazine is full of photographs of the various church activities throughout the summer, so do make a point of seeing if you can see yourself in them! It has been a busy summer, with much happening, and I thank all of you who have been involved in organising, assisting, and taking part in all that we have done together. As we look forward to September and the coming autumn with the changing leaves in the garden, it is good to take some time to sit, perhaps in the garden, and reflect on all God’s goodness around us. “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10). In the midst of our world with all its war and turmoil; in the midst of our lives with all the change and stress; in the midst of all that life can be, God invites us: Be still, and know that I am God. As many of you know, the past weeks have been difficult for me, and this verse has kept my strength secure. To be still and know that God is there, whatever we face in life, is quite something. In this midst of all that comes, we have a God who invites us to be still – to take just a moment to focus and balance ourselves in His love. It takes just a few seconds to pause while cooking the dinner, or before answering emails, or while out walking to give thought to God. And as we give thought to God, we can be inwardly still and gain that strength that only He can give. And so I invite you, be still and know God in your lives; be still and focus for just a while each day – it is amazing the difference it makes.

  • 8. 6 The Women’s Fellowship Sylvia Mack has served the Women's Fellowship as their leader for three years, but now has to stand down. The members thank her for all her hard work and are sad to say goodbye. So far no one has been found to lead this group of ladies. Please note that the monies raised from the coffee mornings are separate from those raised through the refreshments trolley after Sunday morning services. Barbara Jones The Fairtrade Sunday Stall We hold a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. In September the stall will be held on the 8th and 22nd. The message is: “Please buy Fairtrade. Every purchase helps in a good way”. You will find new lines on the stall, including some “stocking fillers” as a foretaste of what will be on the Christmas Card Fair stall. Please continue to support your fair trade stall. Thank you. Richard and Barbara. What’s going on? Turn to page 8 to find out.
  • 10. 8 HOLIDAY FROM HOME If you had looked in at the Church Halls during the week of August 4th, you would have seen a hive of activity. The Holiday from Home was underway. During the week we painted pots, arranged flowers, played skittles, took part in a beetle drive and answered quizzes. We listened to an organ recital and sang along to piano and accordion. A day out to Clandon Park was enjoyed by all, with a fabulous cream tea and those that needed it were pushed in wheelchairs. The week finished with everyone watching “Top Hat”, an old Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers film. There was a lot of chat as we made new friends and got to know old friends better. Each day we were served a two course home-cooked meal prepared by volunteers. All of this was achieved by a band of amazingly energetic volunteers under the leadership of Sue Powell and Joan Smith – they were all unfailingly cheerful and helpful, particularly towards those with disabilities. Transport was arranged for those who could not get to the Church under their own steam. Those of us who took advantage of this opportunity say a big “Thank you!” to everyone concerned! Personally I saw the occasion as Christianity in action – the love of God working through His people for His people. Marion Swanborough

  • 18. 16 Website of the Month No More Seconds The wording is taken from the charity donations pages on the “Just Giving” website. Wording has been edited down. Martha’s words I mentioned in my blog http://www.NeverSeconds.blogspot.co.uk that last year my friends and I set up Charity Children at school and we made felt soaps and candle holders. We had a sale and raised £70 for Mary's Meals enough to feed 7 children for a whole year! My blog is being read all over the world and some people have said I am very lucky to have lunch at all. They are right. Lots of readers have asked how they can support Charity Children but because I can't make enough felt soaps it is best if you support Mary's Meals directly. My grandpa says, “Mary's Meals is a very efficient and effective charity which works with local volunteers to help them provide meals in school for their children. The charity was founded in 2002 by Magnus MacFarlane- Barrow, who lives near us in Argyll, Scotland. Now Mary's Meals feeds over 600,000 children in 16 countries, including Malawi, Liberia, Kenya and Haiti. Many of these children go to school for the first time because of this food. How can you go to school when you have to worry about where the next meal is coming from? “It costs just £10.70 (US$16.80) to feed a child in school for a whole year. This is the average cost worldwide. In Malawi, the children are given a mug of Likuni Phala, maize porridge with soya, vitamins and malt extract. If it is all a child gets to eat, which it will be for some children, it is just enough to keep them healthy. It costs only £7 (US$11) to feed a child for a year there. At least 93p in every pound donated is spend directly on this charitable work.“ When Mary's Meals starts doing lunches in a new school they have to build a kitchen first. They cost £7000. I'd really like there to be a NeverSeconds kitchen but maybe it shouldn't be called NeverSeconds because there will be seconds, for everyone! Updates from the website The BBC documentary 'Martha, Meals and Malawi' airing this weekend on BBC News channel. • 19. 17 ...... Continued from Page 16 Thanks for all your support. BBC Scotland made a TV documentary called 'Martha, Meals and Malawi' airing on BBC News channel all this weekend (3rd & 4th Nov). Catch it if you can and see how your donations have been put to fabulous use by Mary's Meals. 29/10/12 -14:11 ---------------------------------------------- Thank you for making the Friends of NeverSeconds kitchen at Lirangwe school happen! Visiting the school in Malawi in October. Will share the trip on the blog. Very excited to be finalist in the Great Scot Awards. In Malawi at time of ceremony but hope to win for all at Lirangwe! 25/08/12 - 09:48 --------------------------------------------- Finally. Martha wanted to raise £7,000 to fund school building projects in Africa. Her target has been exceed by 1868%. £130,793.08 was raised by the 18th of August 2013. Ed Lord, thou knowest better than I know myself that I am growing older, and will some day be old. Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from craving to straighten out everybody's affairs. Make me thoughtful but not moody; helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom it seems a pity not to use it all, but thou knowest Lord, that I want a few friends at the end. Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details; give me wings to get to the point. Seal my lips on my aches and pains. They are increasing and love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. I dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales of others' pains, but help me to endure them with patience. I dare not ask for improved memory, but for a growing humility and a lessening cocksureness when my memory seems to clash with the memories of others. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken. Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a saint - some of them are so hard to live with - but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the Devil. Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places and talents in unexpected people. And give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so. Amen. A 17th Century Nun's Prayer about Old Age

  • 22. 20 Creating a Place of Prayer Many people find that creating a special place in their home for prayer helps them to commune with God. Imagine that you are setting up a prayer shrine in your home consisting of objects, writings or pictures that have a spiritual meaning for you. The shrine should include at least one thing that appeals to each of the five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. The shrine should be a place of ‘prayer’ in the widest sense, that is, a place where you spend special time with God either in quiet or engaged in activities that open up for you a way to God. 1. Where in your home would your place of prayer be? 2. What would you include in it? 3. How would you spend time in your place of prayer? 4. Try to think of something special that you could add to your prayer place to make it attractive. It could be a favourite drink, a vase of flowers, a favourite picture. 5. You might like to draw how your prayer space might look. Show where you would sit, where you would place each element of your prayer space. Then you just need to make your prayer space a reality. • 24. Final Thought The mist enfolds the hills in its mantle: Embrace us in your love. O Lord. The rain washes the rocks and leaves: Cleanse us in your love. O Lord. The beck tumbles down to the valley: Direct us in your love, O Lord. The mountain peaks stand firm: Establish us in your love. O Lord. The rowan tree clings to the side of the gill: Root us in your love, O Lord. The night veils the fells in darkness: Hide us in your love, O Lord. This night and every night. Hide us in your love, O Lord. Amen. I found this prayer after visiting Hawkshead Methodist Church in the Lake District. This tiny church is presently the oldest building used for Methodist worship in the world. It was built as a cottage in the 15th century and until 1862 was used for residential purposes. It was converted to a church and opened on 20th November 1862 as a Union Chapel, then handed over to the Wesleyan Methodist Conference in 1926.
