Health Datapalooza IV: June 3rd-4th, 2013 CONSUMER APPS SHOWCASE Monday June 3, 2013 • 1:30pm - 2:30pm Location: Regency Ballroom Moderator: Veronica Combs, Editor-in-chief, MedCity News Wellframe has created a “Health GPS”, a digital concierge that supports patients with chronic disease to effectively manage their conditions. Wellframe enables health care providers to thrive in the accountable care context through technology enabled process re-design to optimally allocate human resources in case management. We achieve this through a mobile application for patients, a real-time dashboard for clinicians, a secure server architecture that renders personalized clinical protocols as dynamically generated daily to-do lists and a targeted, protocolized human service.

The promise of precision medicine in oncology is predicated on the availability of accurate, high quality data from the clinic and the laboratory. Likewise, a Learning Health System is one in which we use data to monitor that we are following guidelines and care pathways to deliver the best care and not revert to prior practices (regression testing for care!) and also provide real world evidence to determine effectiveness and identify populations that would benefit from novel therapies. Into this mix of clinical drivers are the rapidly changing capabilities in instrumentation, computing, computation, and the pervasive use of sensors and smart devices. I will highlight a few of the obvious and perhaps not as obvious opportunities in leveraging the increasingly digital landscape in healthcare and biomedical research as we move toward a national learning health system for cancer.

In May 2014, the Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI) announced a new national health care cost and quality transparency initiative. The initiative is supported by Aetna, Humana, and UnitedHealthcare; other payers will be announced shortly. The presentation will provide background information on HCCI and describe the initial release of the three tier public transparency website that HCCI is developing. Tier 1, the public website, will be launched by 12/31/15 and was the focus of the discussion.

Clinical trials are extremely valuable as the primary data source for seeking regulatory approval of products. Historically, regulatory agencie have been the sole recipients of clinical trial data, butthere has been a recent push from various stakeholder groups to open access to clinical trial data to non-regulatory researchers as an act of ethical responsibility to patients, a contribution to public health, and a demonstrated commitment to advancing the science. Some of the barriers include developing a sound approach for de-identifying patient data, adopting universal clinical trial data format, and managing the proactive and non-selective access and security of clinical data once collected. Dr. Boone discusses rationales and benefits/risks of clinical trial transparency, responsible use of publicly sharing this data, barriers and legal implications, and reasonable data sharing models. LockBit 3.0 took gold in the hacking olympics, followed by the plucky upstarts Clop and ALPHV/BlackCat. Business services won the "most likely to get digitally mugged" award, with education and retail nipping at their heels. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
