team streatham came together last month
when local superheroes, Councillors, mPs, a
withering heart streatham article and, most
importantly, residents (who called, wrote,

some issues and clear blue water between

Your High Street… use it or lose it!
High Streets up and down the country face
challenges with consumer habits in flux and
the decline in real wages. It’s not just about
shoppers preferring to buy online, the way we
spend our time and money is changing.
As populations of areas change, house prices
rise, more and more millennial professionals are
moving into our area. Recent research shows
that while these young people (born 1981 to
1996), are comfortable with ordering online,
they also value physical shops, particularly
when purchasing furniture, homewares, DIY, and
gardening equipment.
Streatham has been lucky to hang on to some of
its much-needed shops while chains like Maplin,
New Look and Carpetright close stores across
the UK. But it’s clear consumers are moving
towards a more experiential way of spending.
They don’t just want clothes and food - they want
an experience.
Expect to see DJ’s in clothes shops and coffee
bars and more festivals, events and online
gaming which activate the high street and help
move people up and down it. This is particularly
challenging in Streatham, where we try to marry
the needs of a much-loved High Road with the
demands of a busy London arterial route.
The high street is not just for shopping, it’s a
place where people meet and socialise. ‘The
living room of the millennials’ is right here in
Streatham, but it can only be sustained and
buoyant if we all get out there and use the
independent and creatively-run businesses that
help make our town feel vibrant.

Lizzie Moore and
The Man on the Middle Floor
lee alley
It was the first day of Spring
and a lovely day for meeting
one of Streatham’s up and
coming stars. Streatham
has a forte for attracting
creative people. from Dr
Johnson to Dave the Rapper.
I met Elizabeth S. Moore in a
surprisingly large garden in the
south of Streatham, “Lizzie,”
as she introduced herself)
has just had her first book,
The Man on the Middle Floor,
published, and she is very
much the talk of the literary
town, having been named
WH Smith’s “Fresh Talent” for
2018. Love him or hate him,
Piers Morgan liked it so much
it’s the only novel he’s ever
tweeted about. And he’s right,
I’ve read it and it’s very good.
Lizzie comes from Surrey and
Burgundy but has lived in
Streatham for twenty years.
Her father and godfather both
worked in the wine industry.
She has loved writing from
her mid-teens, and although
she married young and had
three children before she was
23, she never stopped. Her
first pieces were for Good
Housekeeping, then later for
Decanter Magazine, Spectator
and recently Riddle Magazine.
Almost 10 years ago the family
moved to Lizzie’s husband’s
native South Africa where she
found a plethora of new ideas,
sensations and opportunities
to write about.
Lizzie’s range of experiences
from a life lived in many places
contribute to her characters
and stories. And what great
stories! They sing as if she’s
been holding them in so long
they want to burst out upon
the page. Not to over-egg it but
Piers Morgan and I may finally
agree on something.
Without giving too much away,
The Man on the Middle Floor
is about three people living in
flats in the same house and
their interaction despite an
intense disconnection between
them all. Chapters alternate
between the very different
characters – a washed up cop,
a young man with profound
Asperger’s Syndrome and
a repressed, workaholic
nurse. Lizzie writes from the
perspective of each, with a
switch of empathy from one
to another at the end of each
chapter.
The structure of the novel is
just a basic ingredient - the
herbs, spices and aromatic
oils are in the writing itself.
I was reminded of two of my
favourite authors. There’s
shades of Dickens in the
scene setting in the novel,
and personalisation of the
characters in their situations is
superb. That’s not all, though.
Go and buy the book at WH
Smith’s or Waterstones, turn
to page 11 (paperback), read
the first paragraph and tell me
if you don’t see wonderfully
lyrical echoes of Victor Hugo.
If still unconvinced, read the
hilarious, and then poignant,
description of Notting Hill
on page 277. You can’t live
in Streatham and not smile
knowingly.
“The Man on the Middle
Floor” is, available at
WH Smith Streatham and
quality book shops, and on
Amazon Kindle.

RECOMMENDS
Be Kitchen Smart
Organising the most
used room in the house
Keep an eye out for layouts to improve that make
the kitchen work for you. For example, make use
of vertical space.
Even in a small space if you approach storage
thoughtfully you can save yourself time. Adjust
shelving, use drawer dividers, Lazy Susans and
look out for spots to hang hooks or use risers.
Don’t be sentimental, use it or lose it, don’t hang
on to things that you never use.
As needs change so you should revisit your
systems. Regularly look out for improvements to
make the kitchen work and look even better for
you.
Adequate storage is priceless, it will help you
avoid clutter, meaning a more organised, safer
and calm space.

The golden spice

If you’re looking for a natural therapy for

Turmeric is a traditional ancient
Indian remedy, clinically proven to
relievemuscularandjointdiscomfort.
A 2009 clinical trial tested the pain
reduction qualities of turmeric against
standard Ibuprofen. The study focused
on 107 osteoarthritic patients who had
pain climbing stairs and walking; 52 of
them received high strength turmeric
extract daily and 55 received 800mg
Ibuprofen per day. After six weeks, both
groups showed equally lower muscular
and joint pain as well as improved joint
function, suggesting turmeric is as
effective as Ibuprofen. However, while
Ibuprofen has been associated with
multiple side effects, clinical evidence
has proven that turmeric has virtually no
side effects.

most clinically effective, it must have a
strength of at least 95% curcuminoids

absorptionintothe bloodby up to 2000%.
This combination of high strength

English Martyrs
125th Anniversary
In the heart of Streatham Village, adjacent
to Streatham Green, lies a hidden gem. The
magnificent Church of English Martyrs is a Grade
II listed building which, this year, celebrates its
125 year anniversary.
The church owes much to the generosity of
one family – Robert and Mary Measures. Mr
Measures was a very successful local builder
and a Non-Conformist who married an Irish
Catholic woman, Mary Clara Smith from Dublin.
He funded the building of the church in the early
1890s.
The church was designed in a Gothic-revival style,
popular in Victorian times, by architect A.E. Purdie
of Willesden. The impressive stain glass windows,
which were a key reason for the church’s Grade
II listing, were designed by Hardman Studios
of Birmingham. The exterior walls are made of
Kentish rag stone, with Portland stone banding
on the Spire which stands at 136 feet and
9 inches from the ground (slightly
taller than the neighbouring St
Leonard’s spire), the exterior
decorative stone work is made
of Bath stone. Interestingly,
the electricity sub-station
next door, on the corner
of Mitcham Lane, was
designed in the same
Gothic style to complement
the church and must be
one of the most ornate sub-
stations in London.
The first mass was celebrated
in the church on 4th May 1893,
the feast day of the English Martyrs.
The names of 168 Catholic martyrs, who were
killed during the Reformation, are listed in ceiling
panels over the Nave and Transept. Many of
those martyrs were priests and monks who
suffered a brutal death by being hanged, drawn
and quartered. After the Reformation no Catholic
Mass was celebrated in Streatham for 336 years.
The establishment and growth of a vibrant
Catholic parish in Streatham owes much to
the hard work of nuns, especially the Poor
Servants of the Mother of God, an English order
established by Mother Taylor during the Crimean
War. The nuns set up a convent in Streatham,
in Tooting Bec Gardens in the late 1800s, and
some women of that community are still active in
parish life today.
The parish continued to grow and flourish in the
1900s. Luckily the church escaped damage
during the two World Wars. During World War I,
while parts of Streatham were damaged during
a Zeppelin raid, the church only lost a few slates.
During World War II, the parish priest, Fr Mason,
slept in the church during the blitz to ensure a
speedy reaction in the case of any damage to
the church. Fortunately, the church did not suffer
any direct hits. A fascinating history of the Church
was written by Gerald Brine in 1993.
Over the last one hundred years, the parish
has changed, reflecting the wider
changes in Streatham and London
as a whole. From its early
days the parish had a large
Irish contingent. In recent
decades, the parish has
become increasingly diverse
with active parishioners
from over 40 countries
including Nigeria, Ghana,
Italy, Spain, India and many
other countries across Asia,
Africa and South Africa. Since
the early 2000s there has been
an increase in the number of Polish
people who are active in parish life.
After a number of priests from Ireland and of Irish
descent, the first Nigerian parish priest of English
Martyrs, Fr Gregory, was appointed in 2017.
To celebrate its 125th anniversary, the church
is organising a number of events, including an
ecumenical service, guided tours and concerts.
If you have never visited this beautiful building
you are strongly encouraged to do so. News
of forthcoming events will be promoted in this
magazine and on the church website: http://
