Chuka Umunna resigns from Labour
with our MP, Chuka umunna making
headlines, he gave us this message.
“I am very grateful for the
overwhelming support I have received
from constituents…I pledged to fight..a
damaging Brexit and to protect the
jobs and livelihoods of my constituents.
I am a proud supporter of the People’s
Vote campaign to give you the final say
on Brexit, with Remain on the ballot. I hoped I
could influence Labour to do the same, but the
leadership is determined to pursue this Brexit…My
decision was about more than Brexit. The Labour
leadership has overseen a culture of bullying and
antisemitism, which shames the party..I’ve helped
17,000 constituents with case work and important
issues. I look forward to continuing this work as
part of the Independent Group.”
streatham greens decided on a dignified silence
when asked to comment.
lambeth labour group: “We are saddened and
disappointed that Chuka Umunna has resigned
from the Labour Party. He had been a strong local
MP…We have consistently campaigned for
a People’s Vote, in line with the views of
Lambeth residents…”
streatham Conservatives
President,
Neil salt: “He chose to move his
family home away from Streatham..
he chose to leave the Labour Party..
(We) call upon Chuka Umunna to confirm his
commitment to residents..by stating categorically
he will stand as a candidate for Streatham at the
next General Election.”
lambeth liberal Democrat’s Helen
Thompson, prospective streatham
Parliamentary Candidate: "We respect the
principled stand Chuka Umunna has taken…. The
Liberal Democrats have been working with like-
minded MPs… to push for a People's Vote on the
Brexit deal with an option to remain in the EU.”
we asked whether Chuka is committed to
streatham for the long term “Yes, Chuka
remains committed to representing Streatham in
Westminster as an Independent Group MP."

Long term streatham resident,
comedian Jeremy hardy has
sadly died of cancer. he
was born in Farnborough
17 July 1961 and grew up
in hampshire, and studied
Politics and modern history at
the University of southampton.
he started his career
in comedy winning the
prestigious Perrier Comedy
award in 1988 at the
edinburgh Fringe. Jeremy was
a regular on a number of panel
shows on radio 4 including
I’m sorry I haven’t a Clue
and News Quiz. he also wrote
and recorded 50 episodes of
Jeremy hardy speaks to the
Nation and demonstrated
his versatility by appearing in
Blackadder Goes Forth(1989)
and presenting top of the Pops
(1996).
speaking to the BBC last
month, impressionist rory
Bremner remembered
his friend as "a kind and
compassionate man" who
"cared more for people
and causes than fame and
fortune". "he was unique in the
way he delivered thoughtful,
intelligent comedy,"
a life-long socialist, Jeremy
hardy’s political views were
often reflected in his work.
Until 2001, hardy wrote a
column for the Guardian
newspaper in which he
regularly expressed his
support for the socialist
alliance. Jeremy is also
remembered for his comments
on the class distribution of
streatham during the heavy
snow last winter. “we found
out who all the posh people
in streatham are, because
they turned up with their skis
on streatham Common.”
Jeremy was a supporter of the
streatham space theatre and
was in the audience for several
shows last year.

Local hero -
John rhodes
When John rhodes (77), retired, he and his
dogs registered with Pets as therapy (Pat),
and became area co-ordinator for the charity,
which takes suitable pets into care homes,
hospitals and schools to cheer people. John’s
beautiful dogs, Dolly (15), and Digby (16)
have retired but can be seen at John’s
stand at KIte DaY, Country Fairs,
the Christmas Fair at Kings College
school, Wimbledon and the rookery
Christmas market, helping him raise
£1500 a year for Pat.
For the last 10 years John has led the
group organising the annual scruff’s
Dog show on streatham Common. entries
have grown from about 50 to 150 dogs per show
now, with c.2,000 people attending, raising
£600-700 for the Friends of streatham Common
(FosC) and Pat each year. as well as serving on
the committee for the FosC, John is a founder of
streatham Common Community Garden, he was
a trustee for 5 years and still runs a stall selling
produce during harvest.
When streatham
Common Co-Operative
needed £5000 a year
to keep the children’s
paddling pool open, John came up with the idea
of a Doggy splash Day. Now every October
dogs go for a romp in the water while stalls raise
funds for the pool before it is drained for the
winter.
enquiries about donating items for the pool
fund led to the stall for the Pool, which John
runs outside the rookery Café from splash Day
to the rookery Christmas Fair, and
now at the monthly rookery Farmers
market. he is rightly proud that his
activities over the years have generated
so much money for the causes he supports.
“I love streatham Common. It feels like a village
in the heart of urban sprawl -and it has the best
dog walking community in south London!” said
John. We couldn’t agree more!
Thank you, John, for your outstanding
contribution and commitment to our
community.

Food hygiene scores
Inspired by Just eat's decision to stop delivering
from 0 rated establishments, we've checked
out some local eateries' food hygiene ratings.
Go to http://ratings.food.gov.uk/, where you can
find out whether a restaurant, pub, takeaway, or
food shop has high standards of food hygiene
and safety.
Plaudits to the following cafes and pubs that
have been inspected within the past 2 years
(date of inspection is underneath the listing)
and awarded top (level 5) rating for food hygiene
and safety. If an establishment isn’t on the list, it
may still have merited a high score (4), or may
not have been inspected recently or yet - you can

Brixton Bulls rugby Club are gearing up for their
summer season with an Open Day for minis on
30th march. around 50 boys and girls from
reception to Year 7 enjoy rugby sessions in
streatham every saturday morning, year-round
during term time. During the summer term they
also play in festivals against other clubs
across London.
the club is actively recruiting
for new players, ahead of the
summer season, and all
are welcome, regardless of
experience.
the Club is run by volunteers,
many of whom are parents
of players. It was recently
awarded Community Club
of the Year 2018 for London
& south-east by the London rugby
League Foundation in recognition of the
rapid growth of its mini section, the success
of the Men's first team in winning their league,
the addition of a second men's team and the
launch of the first Women's rugby league team
in London.
the mini Bulls were recently mascots for
London's only professional rugby league club,
the London Broncos, in their return to the super
League. Not only did the minis walk out with
the players, but they also played matches on
the pitch in front of the crowd at half-time. the
week before two of the London Broncos players
passed on some great tips as
they helped to take the minis
session.

Ice hockey report
DAVID CArr
streatham IhC head into the business end of
the season this month, beginning the road to the
Play-Offs looking likely to finish in 6th position in
the National Ice hockey League division 1. First
the team has two home fixtures in the regular
season, hosting Peterborough Phantoms and
Invicta Dynamos on the 2nd and 16th march
respectively.
“the last few games have seen large crowds,
which makes all the difference” said head
Coach Jeremy Cornish. “In the last game against
Peterborough the atmosphere really rubbed off
on the players…. even though we lost the game
I think the crowd appreciated the effort the guys
put in.”
streatham players have hit milestones in the
last few weeks with adam Wood scoring his
100th point for the club and defenceman James
Warman making his 200th appearance. the
emergence of local players alec Goldstone and
Brett shepherd has also been great for the club,
who are keen to develop as many of the juniors
as possible with teams going down to under 9
level.
“everyone wants to see local players pulling
on the streatham jersey!” said redhawks Gm
Graham D’anger. streatham juniors have a learn
to play scheme on monday and Wednesday
evenings offering free loaned equipment and
taster sessions for 4-9-year olds. Contact the
rink for information.
