Issues on
Streatham Green
The fight against crime and anti-social behaviour
in Streatham is being hampered by the lack of
reports and records of incidents, so police and
the council are unaware of problems.
The situation at Streatham Green (next to
Brickwood Café by the Manor Arms), plagued
for more than a decade with ASB and crime,
has brought the predicament into sharp relief.
Businesses and the public are complaining
about drug dealing, drunk and disorderly
behaviour, public urination etc. The culprits
are making the Green feel a threatening and
uncomfortable place for local people to use.
A Streatham Green “Summit” was held
involving key stakeholders (including Police
and Councillors) to try to find a solution to the
problem. It emerged that Lambeth Council have
received only a single report about ASB and
crime there since 2013.
CCTV seems the obvious answer but it’s a Catch
22 situation - the Council haven’t sufficient
evidence that crime and ASB are taking place to
justify the expense of installing and monitoring it.
Local people and businesses must play their
part and report incidents so that they are
investigated and dealt with, and so appropriate
resources are secured to deal with the actual
level of crime and anti-social behaviour that is
taking place. However, reporting incidents is
not straightforward, and can be a frustrating
experience.
Report to Police
Crime, road traffic incidents, anti-social
behaviour, missing people, fraud, lost property,
and stolen vehicles should be reported to the
Met. Police. Apart from 999 emergencies, the
Metropolitan Police website (Met.police.uk) is
probably the quickest way to report, then the
101-telephone number. See the email and
phone numbers of our local police teams in the
“Useful Numbers” section on page 34.
Report to Lambeth Council
You can report Anti-social behaviour to Lambeth
Council. ASB includes dog fouling and spitting,
dumping, graffiti and street urination. It can also
include “acting in an aggressive, intimidating
or destructive manner that causes or is likely to
cause harassment, alarm or distress to one or
more persons not of the same household”.
Call 020 7926 5000 or report it online via
the “Noise nuisance, pollution and anti-social
behaviour” page on the lambeth.gov.uk website.

SUMMER”

Independents’ Day UK is an
annual campaign to celebrate
independent retailers, focused
on July 4th, which highlights
the important role they play in
their communities. While the
campaign runs for just a month,
its vision is to help change
consumer habits long term,
creating more sustainable
towns and communities
Independent businesses
account for approximately 65%
of the 290,000 UK businesses.
In streatham they make up
70% of the businesses trading
here and are at the heart of
our local community, offering
tradition, creating jobs, and
contributing to the local
economy.
here is the story of
mediworld, a family-run
medical retailer based in
Streatham for over 40 years!
Naveed Khan, mediworld
Director
“my parents started the
business in 1973, selling
surgical instruments to doctors.
they were often asked about
other items which they would
offer to source. slowly, the
range of products grew and
mediworld started stocking
product, from dental to
veterinary, mobility, disability
and now there are more than
2,500 products in our range.”
who are your customers?
“there’s no other store in the
country offering both medical
and mobility/disability ranges.
We supply care homes,
medical schools, colleges and
universities, laboratories, GPs,
private hospitals and clinics
all over the UK and have been
approved suppliers to the Nhs,
United Nations and moD for
over 30 years.”
what does being an
independent business mean
for you?
“everything is run from our
offices in Streatham. Despite
our global reach we are very
much a local business and in
terms of services we tend to not
stray far from our doorstep. Our
social media is run by a local
‘digital mum’, as is our graphic
design, and our accounts and
insurance broker are around
the corner. I grew up here and
attended Crown Lane Primary
school, with many afternoons
spent playing football on the
Common!
how has your business been
able to adapt to changes
over the years?
“as a business we constantly
face threats to our survival.
When a high street chain bulk
imports at low quality and price,
we cannot compete financially.
as an independent business we
have a duty to make sure that
anyone who walks through our
doors gets the best possible
product at the most affordable
price.”
in 2002, mediworld
moved 5 doors to a bigger
premise as their product
range increased and they
launched their online store
five years ago.
“there’s been a real upturn
over the last decade with
many independent businesses
opening up in streatham. I
believe the Instreatham BID
team have played a massive
role -streatham thanks you for
the hard work and great strides
you have made. residents
like mel Larsen & Pauline
milligan who established
community events like the
Peace Festival and Food
Festival should be applauded,
as should Jane Wroe Wright &
Lee alley for setting up heart
streatham magazine. there
are so many unsung heroes
who have selflessly pioneered
real positive change in our
community and high street!
Our business rates were
increased last year by 34%.
When you visit your local
independent store, please
remember that whilst they
might be fighting corporate
battles with banks, insurance
companies, overseas suppliers
and even government
departments, they see you as
an individual and will always
try their best to make sure your
needs are met to the best of
their ability.”

26 July 1731. this is the
earliest mention of cricket in
streatham.
Streatham Cricket Club

area and by the end of the
Victorian era, streatham
boasted a total of 72 clubs
including tradesmen’s teams
such as the streatham early
Closing Cricket Club and
the streatham Wednesday

Wednesday afternoons when it
was traditional to close shops.
Other clubs either represented

Plastic Free streatham
about Us!
Plastic Free groups are
popping up all over the place
these days for very good
reason: twelve million tons
of plastic pollution is finding
its way into our oceans every
year. even more is dumped
on land, in our lakes, rivers
and buried in the soil. Plastic
can take hundreds of years
to decompose, ultimately
breaking down into dangerous
and harmful micro particles
in our seas. the production of
plastic is also contributing to
global warming and therefore
climate change.
We formed Plastic free
Streatham at the end of
last year, following a post on
streatham mums Network
about environmental issues.
Councillor Nicole Griffiths
(Green Party), suggested we
form a group with the aim of
reducing waste and single use
plastics in the local area. From
our experiences of attempting
to become plastic free in
our own lives. we decided
to work to encourage others
in the community and local
businesses to reduce their
reliance on single use plastic.
For clarity's sake, single use
plastic products are used just
once before being disposed
of. these include plastic
bags, straws, coffee stirrers,
drinks bottles and most food
packaging. Very few plastic
items go on to be recycled.
Plastic Free streatham is now
a team united in their aim
to help create a single use
plastic free streatham high
road. We are committed to
raising awareness among the
community about both plastic
and other environmental
issues; providing information
to help us all live a more
sustainable and zero waste
lifestyle.
since launching Plastic
Free streatham, we have
researched and understand
recycling and waste disposal
methods in our area. We
have met Veolia, the company
responsible for Lambeth’s
waste and recycling, and
visited the Western riverside
Waste authority (WrWa) to
see for ourselves how waste
and recycling is processed. We
have created a website full of
tips on how to live plastic free,
providing local information
and a directory of businesses
who are sUP free already. We
have organised a Plastic Free
February challenge, a film
night and a workshop on Food
Waste Prevention.
We have launched a campaign
to reduce the use of single
use products (both plastics
and others) and are engaging
businesses and community
groups to take part. We
are very excited about the
campaign and hope the local
community will support us and
be part of this ground-breaking
initiative.

Streatham WIne House show
off their certificates
22. 22 | heart streatham
at the beginning of June, we launched a
campaign with local businesses to reduce the
use of single use plastic in streatham and
promote the concept of ‘zero waste.’ By zero
waste we mean trying to produce as little waste
as possible.
We developed an online survey alongside a
Pledge and Certificate system. A business can
pledge to become plastic free or gain up to two
certificates which they can display on their shop
windows to allow customers to know they are
part of the Plastic Free streatham scheme.
● Plastic free status ● Zero Waste Scheme
We want to encourage streatham residents to
shop ‘plastic free’ by using their own shopping
bags, to use reusable cups rather than take
away ones, say ‘no’ to straws etc. Going plastic
free should not cost businesses or individuals
more, but the reverse; the less waste we
produce, the better it is for our pockets and for
the planet! Businesses might be tempted to
replace plastic single-use items with alternative
products but if customers bring their own (cups/
containers etc.), this may not be necessary.
a few local businesses have already acted
to phase out some of the items listed on our
certificates and/or introduced schemes aiming
to reduce waste.
If you run a business and would like to pledge
or find out more about the Certificate system,
please
● Contact us by emailing
info@plasticfreestreatham.co.uk
and we will visit you.
● Or complete the survey using the
address below, and we will get in touch.
https://plasticfreestreatham.typeform.
com/to/d2nLvb
meanwhile, members of the Plastic Free
streatham team are already visiting businesses
on the high road! We will report on our
progress via our Facebook page, twitter,
Instagram and on our website. We will mention
all businesses who are already plastic free or
pledging to be so.
If you run a business, please contact us to find
out which certificate might apply to you. If you
would like to nominate a business, then please
contact us and let us know.
We are pleased to announce that the following

Friends of Tooting Common: 2019 Fun Dog Show
The Friends of Tooting Common
The annual Fun Dog Show
was held on 9th June on
Tooting Bec Common. 100
dogs entered in the show,
from chihuahuas and terrier
puppies up to a Great Dane
and an Irish Wolfhound (a
previous winner of Best
Puppy). There were about 450
spectators and competitors.
Judges included Rosena
Allin-Khan (MP for Tooting),
Cllr Jane Cooper (Mayor of
Wandsworth), Jacqueline Said
(the Dogs of Tooting Common),
Jennifer and Lauren (from
Streatham Hill Vets), and
Downtown Woof.
Classes included Most
Handsome Dog, Prettiest
Bitch, Young and Junior
Handlers, and Best Trick. In
the Young and Junior Handler
classes, children had to take
their dog for a trot around the
ring, and then make them
sit still, which is sometimes
surprisingly difficult. The Best
Puppy class was judged by
Rosena Allin-Khan MP and a
large group of children, who
enthusiastically voted for
Pretzel the cavapoo. Otis the
Jack Russell won the Best Trick
class by popular acclaim for
his moving portrayal of “the
injured soldier”.
Many thanks to the stalls
and exhibitors who came to
the Show: Downtown Woof,
Pupsicle (ice cream for dogs),
Wandsworth Council (Parks
& Events Police, Dog Control
Service, and Animal Welfare
Service), Strays of Greece,
Black Dog Bakery, Streatham
Hill Vets, and Stranger Naans.
Thank you. Streatham Hill
Vets, Black Dog Bakery and
Downtown Woof for providing
