In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
Slide 2 - 6

Repeat magazine uses the original layout of the NME magazine, having the cover star with a
clear portfolio image to get the attention of the audience. They also both have bold sans
serif fonts to get the attention of the audience however REPEAT fills the top of the magazine
so it is more likely to get the attention of the audience and NME only has it in the top left
corner. You can see by the mastheads the house colours that I used contrast to NME
magazine. I chose to keep the red, black and white because they represent rock and indie
which is my main target audience, however I chose to place the blue into my house colours
because it shows that the magazine isn’t just mainstream and has different musical genres
in it.
I used the layout of where the cover lines were placed on the NME magazine however
instead of having a lot of cover lines I only chose to have 3 to make it look less cluttered. I
place the main cover line in the same place as the NME magazine because of the rule of
thirds making it easy for the customer to see.

In the contents page you can see that I have stayed with the less cluttered look, instead of
NME’s contents page with has every inch of it filled with text and image. I chose to do this to
make it easier to read through the contents of my magazine, also it make the magazine
more sophisticated so it wont just attract the younger teenage audience it will attract young
adults as well.

I did my double page spread with the NME layout as a sample layout. I chose the have the
whole image as the background like the NME. However instead of having the cover star as
the first this you notice I chose to make it the title and the text. The cover star is just at the
side of the double page spread, with no direct address which makes it a lot easier for the
reader to notice the text first.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Slide 7

My magazine is aimed at a particular audience, even though it’s not a niche magazine it still
has its limitations to its audience. My magazine targets teenagers and younger adults who
are interested in rock and indie in particular, however I have also added unpopular artist in
the mainstream scene to add to the target audience; people who don’t listen to mainstream
indie and rock. You can see by my house colours that the magazine is uni-sex and attracts
both males and females.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Slide 8

Bauer Media reaches over nineteen million UK adults across multiple media channels.
They have more than eighty influential media brands spanning a wide range of interests,
including heat, GRAZIA, Closer, FHM, MATCH, Kiss 100, Kerrang, Q and 4Music, because
Bauer Media distributes magazines such as Q, I think they will also distribute my magazine
because my magazine is quite similar to Q so they will then sell my magazine and more
people would buy it as well as the people who already buy Q so therefore Bauer Media
would profit off distributing my magazine as well.

I think that my magazine could be advertised through TV adverts, because magazines such
as ‘heat’ are advertised on TV and because they are distributed by Bauer Media, I then also
think that my magazine could be advertised on TV because I agree that Bauer Media would
distribute my magazine because of the similarities to REPEAT and Q. Also, if my magazine
did get distributed by Bauer Media then it will be advertised on the radio as well as a new
up-coming music magazine; I think it will be advertised on radio stations such as FHM,
because FHM are also linked in with Bauer Media.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
Slide 9 – 12

My magazine was targeted to teenagers and young adults between the ages of 14 to 26. The
gender of my magazine is mixed like NME and Q, this is seen by the house style being black
and red, my magazine is based on this house style. In my product research I conducted a
questionnaire and found that 47% of them said that the cover star is what most attracts
them to the magazine. This is why I did a clear portfolio of my cover star which covered
most of the magazine and had her directly address the audience; this will catch the
audience’s eye. I found that may target audience that I interviewed that 26% of them
preferred indie and 23% of them preferred rock. These were the two highest scoring genre’s
which is why I chose to have them as my main genres in my magazine. I also conducted a
focus group and asked what type of article they would like to read about, so the highest
scoring result which was interview with 38% of my target audience wanting to read it that is
why I chose to do an interview. Also I asked which type of genre’s they would prefer to read
about so I chose the top scoring results and put them in my contents page so it will appeal
to the majority of people like NME. Rock and Indie were both the highest scoring % at 26%
each.

How did you attract/address your audience?
Slide 13 - 15

I attracted my audience by selecting the most popular genres from my product research
(Indie and Rock) and writing about them in my magazine. I know that this will work because
my product research sample was made up of the target audience that I have targeted in my
magazine.
Another way I have addressed the audience is using the direct address on the front cover,
this grabs the audience’s attention of the audience before they even look at the cover lines.
Coupled with this are the house style colours, using black, red, white and blue is a huge
contrast in colours which will even more attract the audience to read the magazine and by
having the huge masthead which is all of these colours combined adds to this eye catching
magazine. Also because these colours are seen as uni-sex it won’t just attract females or it
won’t just attract males it will attract both.
I also addressed the audience using the rule of thirds on my double page spread, by doing
this it makes the image look professional and appealing to look at, therefore making the
reader more inclined to read the double page spread, so they will purchase the magazine.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Slide 16 - 18

Through the process of me constructing my magazine I have learnt about various
technologies that helped me to make my magazine, these include; learning how to use a
professional camera and changing the lighting on it and how to zoom and out so it makes
the photograph look professional. I had never used Photoshop before I started doing my
magazine, through the process of using it I feel that I had became better at using it e.g.
cutting out the image from the background that it is originally on and placing it on another
background, like I did with my contents page. Before I started making my magazine I had
never used E-Blogger before, but throughout the process of making my magazine and the
research that I had to conduct before I made it I had to upload everything onto E-Blogger.
Another technology that I was new to was Slide Share where I had to upload word
documents onto, to be able to put them onto my blog, all of these technologies have been
very useful to me throughout the process of making my magazine.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression
from it to the full product?
Slide 19 – 20

When conducting my first preliminary task I learnt how to use the basic tools of Photoshop
when creating my Eccles magazine. Through making my music magazine I have seen myself
progress in skills on the digital camera, I can now take photo’s which look profession rather
than amateur. My design and layout knowledge has also improved from the beginning of
this task, when I was trying out different styles of layout etc. I learnt a lot about what looks
good and appealing to my target audience than to thing which look unprofessional. You can
see this improvement with the contrast in both my magazine front covers. When creating
my preliminary magazine compared to when I did my music magazine, I can see the
improvement I have made with Photoshop. Learning all new tools so I could make my
magazine look more professional and attractive e.g. adjusting the colour of my main image. I
did nothing to the Eccles college magazine image.
I feel like the preliminary task was helpful and played a big role in getting my music
magazine looking more professional and attractive. The trial run was a great way to learn
with out the pressure of getting the magazine perfect.

Evaluation

  • 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Slide 2 - 6 Repeat magazine uses the original layout of the NME magazine, having the cover star with a clear portfolio image to get the attention of the audience. They also both have bold sans serif fonts to get the attention of the audience however REPEAT fills the top of the magazine so it is more likely to get the attention of the audience and NME only has it in the top left corner. You can see by the mastheads the house colours that I used contrast to NME magazine. I chose to keep the red, black and white because they represent rock and indie which is my main target audience, however I chose to place the blue into my house colours because it shows that the magazine isn’t just mainstream and has different musical genres in it. I used the layout of where the cover lines were placed on the NME magazine however instead of having a lot of cover lines I only chose to have 3 to make it look less cluttered. I place the main cover line in the same place as the NME magazine because of the rule of thirds making it easy for the customer to see. In the contents page you can see that I have stayed with the less cluttered look, instead of NME’s contents page with has every inch of it filled with text and image. I chose to do this to make it easier to read through the contents of my magazine, also it make the magazine more sophisticated so it wont just attract the younger teenage audience it will attract young adults as well. I did my double page spread with the NME layout as a sample layout. I chose the have the whole image as the background like the NME. However instead of having the cover star as the first this you notice I chose to make it the title and the text. The cover star is just at the side of the double page spread, with no direct address which makes it a lot easier for the reader to notice the text first. How does your media product represent particular social groups? Slide 7 My magazine is aimed at a particular audience, even though it’s not a niche magazine it still has its limitations to its audience. My magazine targets teenagers and younger adults who are interested in rock and indie in particular, however I have also added unpopular artist in the mainstream scene to add to the target audience; people who don’t listen to mainstream indie and rock. You can see by my house colours that the magazine is uni-sex and attracts both males and females.
  • 2. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? Slide 8 Bauer Media reaches over nineteen million UK adults across multiple media channels. They have more than eighty influential media brands spanning a wide range of interests, including heat, GRAZIA, Closer, FHM, MATCH, Kiss 100, Kerrang, Q and 4Music, because Bauer Media distributes magazines such as Q, I think they will also distribute my magazine because my magazine is quite similar to Q so they will then sell my magazine and more people would buy it as well as the people who already buy Q so therefore Bauer Media would profit off distributing my magazine as well. I think that my magazine could be advertised through TV adverts, because magazines such as ‘heat’ are advertised on TV and because they are distributed by Bauer Media, I then also think that my magazine could be advertised on TV because I agree that Bauer Media would distribute my magazine because of the similarities to REPEAT and Q. Also, if my magazine did get distributed by Bauer Media then it will be advertised on the radio as well as a new up-coming music magazine; I think it will be advertised on radio stations such as FHM, because FHM are also linked in with Bauer Media. Who would be the audience for your media product? Slide 9 – 12 My magazine was targeted to teenagers and young adults between the ages of 14 to 26. The gender of my magazine is mixed like NME and Q, this is seen by the house style being black and red, my magazine is based on this house style. In my product research I conducted a questionnaire and found that 47% of them said that the cover star is what most attracts them to the magazine. This is why I did a clear portfolio of my cover star which covered most of the magazine and had her directly address the audience; this will catch the audience’s eye. I found that may target audience that I interviewed that 26% of them preferred indie and 23% of them preferred rock. These were the two highest scoring genre’s which is why I chose to have them as my main genres in my magazine. I also conducted a focus group and asked what type of article they would like to read about, so the highest scoring result which was interview with 38% of my target audience wanting to read it that is why I chose to do an interview. Also I asked which type of genre’s they would prefer to read about so I chose the top scoring results and put them in my contents page so it will appeal to the majority of people like NME. Rock and Indie were both the highest scoring % at 26% each. How did you attract/address your audience? Slide 13 - 15 I attracted my audience by selecting the most popular genres from my product research (Indie and Rock) and writing about them in my magazine. I know that this will work because my product research sample was made up of the target audience that I have targeted in my magazine. Another way I have addressed the audience is using the direct address on the front cover,
  • 3. this grabs the audience’s attention of the audience before they even look at the cover lines. Coupled with this are the house style colours, using black, red, white and blue is a huge contrast in colours which will even more attract the audience to read the magazine and by having the huge masthead which is all of these colours combined adds to this eye catching magazine. Also because these colours are seen as uni-sex it won’t just attract females or it won’t just attract males it will attract both. I also addressed the audience using the rule of thirds on my double page spread, by doing this it makes the image look professional and appealing to look at, therefore making the reader more inclined to read the double page spread, so they will purchase the magazine. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? Slide 16 - 18 Through the process of me constructing my magazine I have learnt about various technologies that helped me to make my magazine, these include; learning how to use a professional camera and changing the lighting on it and how to zoom and out so it makes the photograph look professional. I had never used Photoshop before I started doing my magazine, through the process of using it I feel that I had became better at using it e.g. cutting out the image from the background that it is originally on and placing it on another background, like I did with my contents page. Before I started making my magazine I had never used E-Blogger before, but throughout the process of making my magazine and the research that I had to conduct before I made it I had to upload everything onto E-Blogger. Another technology that I was new to was Slide Share where I had to upload word documents onto, to be able to put them onto my blog, all of these technologies have been very useful to me throughout the process of making my magazine. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? Slide 19 – 20 When conducting my first preliminary task I learnt how to use the basic tools of Photoshop when creating my Eccles magazine. Through making my music magazine I have seen myself progress in skills on the digital camera, I can now take photo’s which look profession rather than amateur. My design and layout knowledge has also improved from the beginning of this task, when I was trying out different styles of layout etc. I learnt a lot about what looks good and appealing to my target audience than to thing which look unprofessional. You can see this improvement with the contrast in both my magazine front covers. When creating my preliminary magazine compared to when I did my music magazine, I can see the improvement I have made with Photoshop. Learning all new tools so I could make my magazine look more professional and attractive e.g. adjusting the colour of my main image. I did nothing to the Eccles college magazine image. I feel like the preliminary task was helpful and played a big role in getting my music
  • 4. magazine looking more professional and attractive. The trial run was a great way to learn with out the pressure of getting the magazine perfect.
