PowerHA Basic Concepts
 PowerHA SystemMirror creates and manages
a shared storage cluster topology
– IASP volume group hosts the DB,
IFS data
– Admin Domain manages the
sysbas data
– Note that the foundational topology
does not involve replication

PowerHA Basic Concepts - Geomirror
 Internal disk is not switchable (LUNs required), you use
geomirror with internal disk configurations (or for that
matter any disk configurations)
 Use Geomirror for configs with IASPs under 5 Tbytes
(a suggested guideline … key point is proper sizing for
bandwidth when considering a complete re-sync after
an outage)
– Sync mode included with Standard Edition
(~ 40 KM or less)
– Async mode requires Enterprise Edition
– Storage agnostic (typically internal disk)

PowerHA Business Value & Objectives
 Provide IBM i Clients With Confidence & Certainly of Outcome
– PowerHA eliminates the logical replication dilemma:
• Have we identified all of the objects that need to be replicated ?
• Are all of those objects in sync ?
• Should we or should we not failover ?
 Enable best of breed performance and HA/DR metrics
– Provide HA/DR and application performance
– Automate HA/DR operations
– Exploit and integrate modern storage technology
– Eliminate single points of failure
– Enable RPO of 0 and best case RTO
 Address ROI Acquisition and Cost of Ownership
– PowerHA is priced per processor core
– CBU reduces total number of licenses required
– FlashCopy (save window elimination)
– Minimize operational expense through automation
 Provide Native Embedded Technology for HA/DR Solutions
– PowerHA technology is an integrated extension of SLIC and iOS

Operational Simplicity – Actual Customer Scenario
 Example Scenario: Vary-on times dependent on database characteristics
 PowerHA cluster conducts operations, IT personal role is primarily monitoring
 Advance copy services with PowerHA minimizes storage/cluster management
Step Time (mins) Headcount Person mins PowerHA/DS8k/Metro Mirror Steps
1 0 0 0 Target replication Vg (IASP) is in sync
2 10 1 10 Quiesce app, vary off primary Vg
3 5 0 0 Fall-over & reverse replication from DR
site to primary site
4 5 0 0 Vary on application Vg, IP take over
0 0 0 0 Check job logs (no longer necessary)
6 10 1 10 Start application environment and
validate everything is up and running
7 0 0 0 Start production
Elapsed Time 30 mins 1 20 (fail back => go to step 1)

Operational Expense Analysis (OPEX) Example
 DR compliance test: rollover/rollback to/from remote location
– Two Scenarios for comparison
1. IBM Configuration: Two 770’s, Two DS8800s, Metro Mirror
2. ISV Configuration: Two 770’s, Two DS8800s, Logical Replication
 Simple environment
– One partition failover
– Minimal apply lag on target box (for the benefit of the logical replication test)
– Production did not remain on target box (for the benefit of the logical replication test)
 OPEX comparison *
– Logical replication scenario, 6 person hours of effort (4 hours elapsed time)
– PowerHA scenario, .3 person hours of effort (.5 hour elapsed time)
 PowerHA
– Requires minimal monitoring
– No out of sync conditions for IASP data
– No apply process lag on target
– Failover processing is automated
* Operational complexity varies widely with logical replication deployments. Lag apply
processing, sync checking, and multiple lpars increase complexity and time.

Planning
 CBU allows PowerHA licenses entitlement
fail-over from the registered production server
– Minimum 1 entitlement required on the CBU
box*
– CBU server allows the temporary transfer of
entitlements from primary server for non
concurrent usage on the CBU server
– Round-up when using partial processors
– 3.5 processors = 4 entitlements
Example
 No HA/DR required for Partition 1
– No PowerHA licenses
 HA required for Partition 2 and 3
– All processors in the production server
partitions 2 and 3 are licensed for PowerHA
– One key, 8 entitlements
– The license key will be a permanent key
installed on partition 2 and 3
 A single processor is licensed on the CBU server
– One key, one entitlement
– The license key will be a temporary key for 8
cores good for two years installed on
partitions 2 and 3
*note is the HA/DR solution requires more than
one core on CBU to run replication services,
those extra cores must also be licensed.

UPCOMING TRAINING
 IBM Power HA for i, Clustering, and Independent Disk Pools Implementation
 Course Code AS541
 April 22-25 in Rochester, MN
 High Availability (HA) in an IBM i environment is achieved with the implementation of an IBM i Independent Auxiliary
Storage Pool (IASP) and IBM PowerHA for IBM i. After creating an independent disk pool, data and applications are
migrated from system disk space to the independent disk pool. Then, using Cross-site mirroring (XSM) with geographic
mirroring or IBM System Storage Copy Services, the disk pool can be made highly available. Successfully implementing a
continuously available environment requires knowledge of the application, data, and end-user requirements. Learn about
many of the concepts from a series of presentations and gain practical experience through hands-on lab exercises.

 System Storage DS8000 on i
 Course Code OS830
 April 16-18 in Rochester, MN
 This course introduces IBM i technical specialists to the features, architecture and capabilities of IBM System l Storage
DS6000 and DS8000 systems. It is roughly divided into two main parts: DS6000/DS8000 hardware, architecture and
configuration for IBM i use, and high availability solutions System Storage makes possible for IBM i and the technologies
involved. The material follows a step-by-step approach in showing how to configure a DS8000 system.

  • 4. © 2013 IBM Corporation IBM Power Systems Client Need: Data Center  Requirements – Near continuous application service – Automated operations (minimize operational expense) – Recovery Time Objective (RTO) measured in minutes – Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is Zero (no data loss) – Eliminate affects of planned outages – Eliminate tape back-up window  Solution Strategy: – PowerHA SystemMirror Standard Edition
  • 5. © 2013 IBM Corporation IBM Power Systems  Requirements – HA/DR for both data center & multi-site operations – Automated role-swap operations – Readily demonstrate remote recoverability compliance  Solution Strategy: – Unified clustering solution for data center & multi-site resiliency – PowerHA SystemMirror Enterprise Edition Client Need Today: Multi-Site Data Center Remote Site
  • 6. © 2013 IBM Corporation IBM Power Systems PowerHA Basic Concepts  PowerHA SystemMirror creates and manages a shared storage cluster topology – IASP volume group hosts the DB, IFS data – Admin Domain manages the sysbas data – Note that the foundational topology does not involve replication
  • 7. © 2013 IBM Corporation IBM Power Systems PowerHA Basic Concepts - Geomirror  Internal disk is not switchable (LUNs required), you use geomirror with internal disk configurations (or for that matter any disk configurations)  Use Geomirror for configs with IASPs under 5 Tbytes (a suggested guideline … key point is proper sizing for bandwidth when considering a complete re-sync after an outage) – Sync mode included with Standard Edition (~ 40 KM or less) – Async mode requires Enterprise Edition – Storage agnostic (typically internal disk) Admin domain Geomirror
  • 8. © 2013 IBM Corporation IBM Power Systems PowerHA Switchable LUN Cluster
  • 9. © 2013 IBM Corporation IBM Power Systems PowerHA Business Value & Objectives  Provide IBM i Clients With Confidence & Certainly of Outcome – PowerHA eliminates the logical replication dilemma: • Have we identified all of the objects that need to be replicated ? • Are all of those objects in sync ? • Should we or should we not failover ?  Enable best of breed performance and HA/DR metrics – Provide HA/DR and application performance – Automate HA/DR operations – Exploit and integrate modern storage technology – Eliminate single points of failure – Enable RPO of 0 and best case RTO  Address ROI Acquisition and Cost of Ownership – PowerHA is priced per processor core – CBU reduces total number of licenses required – FlashCopy (save window elimination) – Minimize operational expense through automation  Provide Native Embedded Technology for HA/DR Solutions – PowerHA technology is an integrated extension of SLIC and iOS
  • 10. © 2013 IBM Corporation IBM Power Systems Operational Simplicity – Actual Customer Scenario  Example Scenario: Vary-on times dependent on database characteristics  PowerHA cluster conducts operations, IT personal role is primarily monitoring  Advance copy services with PowerHA minimizes storage/cluster management Step Time (mins) Headcount Person mins PowerHA/DS8k/Metro Mirror Steps 1 0 0 0 Target replication Vg (IASP) is in sync 2 10 1 10 Quiesce app, vary off primary Vg 3 5 0 0 Fall-over & reverse replication from DR site to primary site 4 5 0 0 Vary on application Vg, IP take over 0 0 0 0 Check job logs (no longer necessary) 6 10 1 10 Start application environment and validate everything is up and running 7 0 0 0 Start production Elapsed Time 30 mins 1 20 (fail back => go to step 1)
  • 11. © 2013 IBM Corporation IBM Power Systems Operational Expense Analysis (OPEX) Example  DR compliance test: rollover/rollback to/from remote location – Two Scenarios for comparison 1. IBM Configuration: Two 770’s, Two DS8800s, Metro Mirror 2. ISV Configuration: Two 770’s, Two DS8800s, Logical Replication  Simple environment – One partition failover – Minimal apply lag on target box (for the benefit of the logical replication test) – Production did not remain on target box (for the benefit of the logical replication test)  OPEX comparison * – Logical replication scenario, 6 person hours of effort (4 hours elapsed time) – PowerHA scenario, .3 person hours of effort (.5 hour elapsed time)  PowerHA – Requires minimal monitoring – No out of sync conditions for IASP data – No apply process lag on target – Failover processing is automated * Operational complexity varies widely with logical replication deployments. Lag apply processing, sync checking, and multiple lpars increase complexity and time.

  • 30. © 2013 IBM Corporation IBM Power Systems 30 UPCOMING TRAINING  IBM Power HA for i, Clustering, and Independent Disk Pools Implementation  Course Code AS541  April 22-25 in Rochester, MN  High Availability (HA) in an IBM i environment is achieved with the implementation of an IBM i Independent Auxiliary Storage Pool (IASP) and IBM PowerHA for IBM i. After creating an independent disk pool, data and applications are migrated from system disk space to the independent disk pool. Then, using Cross-site mirroring (XSM) with geographic mirroring or IBM System Storage Copy Services, the disk pool can be made highly available. Successfully implementing a continuously available environment requires knowledge of the application, data, and end-user requirements. Learn about many of the concepts from a series of presentations and gain practical experience through hands-on lab exercises.  http://www-304.ibm.com/jct03001c/services/learning/ites.wss/us/en?pageType=course_description&courseCode=AS541  System Storage DS8000 on i  Course Code OS830  April 16-18 in Rochester, MN  This course introduces IBM i technical specialists to the features, architecture and capabilities of IBM System l Storage DS6000 and DS8000 systems. It is roughly divided into two main parts: DS6000/DS8000 hardware, architecture and configuration for IBM i use, and high availability solutions System Storage makes possible for IBM i and the technologies involved. The material follows a step-by-step approach in showing how to configure a DS8000 system.  http://www-304.ibm.com/jct03001c/services/learning/ites.wss/us/en?pageType=course_description&courseCode=OS830

  1. Complete IBM Power Systems integrated end to end solutions for HA DR Focus: 24x 7 Application availability through planned or unplanned outage events Deeply integrated extension of host operating system (AIX, IBM i) Developed and supported by the Power Systems engineering development team HA Clustering technology Clustering provides the applications a complete resiliency infrastructure Cluster monitors and manages primary and secondary resources for HADR operations Storage based data resiliency Data resiliency is an extension of the host system storage management architecture Storage volumes are either switchable or mirrored between nodes in the cluster Hardware based replication services for Multi-Site Operations Host Based Replication (geomirroring for IBM i, or GLVM for AIX) Storage Base Replication (Metro Mirror or Global Mirror) Overall solution characteristic Automation, minimal IT operations involvement Data between primary and secondary nodes always in sync always ready for a failover event
  2. When discussing the topic of HA solutions that involve multiple systems, break it into two separate parts. Disaster Recovery is the most basic and virtually every client has a DR solution (most commonly backing up to tape and vaulting offsite) Key requirement for a a DR solution is to be able to recover IT operations at a remote location. High Availability is about keeping the critical business applications to users through unplanned outage events, back-up to tape operations and to be able to recover from non-disaster outage events quickly. Increasingly clients are looking to this capability as their users/clients become more demanding. The essential way to describe a true HA environment is to by doing regular and sustained role swaps. This means that the primary system becomes the backup system and the remains so until the next role swap operation. This is a fundamental and critical point. Its not enough to simply “test” that the role swap can occur, its essential that products moves to the second server and remains there and the second server becomes the primary server. The purpose for such an arrangement is to eliminate the save window, role swap on demand for maintenance procedures and of course, to be able to role swap in the event of an unplanned non disaster outage. Work with your local BP solution provider to develop a comprehensive plan that address the client requirements. You most likely will need to help the client develop those requirements because often they are not sure where to start and what’s important.
