Disaster Recovery is the most basic and virtually every client has a DR solution (most commonly backing up to tape and vaulting offsite) Key requirement for a a DR solution is to be able to recover IT operations at a remote location. High Availability is about keeping the critical business applications to users through unplanned outage events, back-up to tape operations and to be able to recover from non-disaster outage events quickly. Increasingly clients are looking to this capability as their users/clients become more demanding. The essential way to describe a true HA environment is to by doing regular and sustained role swaps. This means that the primary system becomes the backup system and the remains so until the next role swap operation. This is a fundamental and critical point. Its not enough to simply “test” that the role swap can occur, its essential that products moves to the second server and remains there and the second server becomes the primary server. The purpose for such an arrangement is to eliminate the save window, role swap on demand for maintenance procedures and of course, to be able to role swap in the event of an unplanned non disaster outage. Work with your local BP solution provider to develop a comprehensive plan that address the client requirements. High Availability is about keeping the critical business applications to users through unplanned outage events, back-up to tape operations and to be able to recover from non-disaster outage events quickly. Increasingly clients are looking to this capability as their users/clients become more demanding. The essential way to describe a true HA environment is to by doing regular and sustained role swaps. This means that the primary system becomes the backup system and the remains so until the next role swap operation. This is a fundamental and critical point.
