Management Of Anaemia - by Hinduja Hospital
1. Management of
Anaemia
Dr. Balkrishna Padate
Consultant in Haematology, Haemato-
Oncology and Bone Marrow
Transplantation (BMT)
MD (Med) MRCP(UK) FRCPath(UK)
CCST(UK)
2. Anaemia
• Condition where the number of red blood
cells in the blood is low and reduced
Hemoglobin (Normal Hb 13.5)
• Detected in routing blood count or when a
person does blood count because of
symptoms of tiredness etc.
• Anemia is actually a sign of a disease process
rather than a disease itself.
3. • Blood is comprised of two parts; a liquid
part called the plasma and a cellular part.
The cellular part contains several
different cell types.
• One of the most important and most
numerous cell type are red blood cells.
The other cell types are the white blood
cells and platelets.
4. • Red cells are produced in the bone marrow and
then they come to the blood pool and do its
job of carrying oxygen to the all parts of the
body.
• Patients who are anemic, do not get good
oxygen supply to their organs and hence feel
short of breath and tired. They cannot do their
day to day activities well.
5. • Having the correct number of red blood cells
and prevention of anemia requires
cooperation among the kidneys, the bone
marrow, and nutrients within the body.
6. Causes of Anaemia
1. Loss of Red Cells due to bleeding leading to
iron deficiency anaemia
2. Decreased production of Red Cells from the
bone marrow e.g. Leukaemia, Aplastic
anaemia
3. Decreased production of red cells because of
poor kidney function
4. Increased destruction of red cells in the
blood
7. Investigations for anaemia
• When we look at the blood count (CBC) we get
suggestions about the causes of anaemia e.g.
iron deficiency anaemia.
• Rarely if the anaemia is because of bone
marrow related condition like aplastic anaemia
or acute leukaemia, the bone marrow
examination is necessary.
8. First Question
• The onset of Anaemia
• Acute versus chronic
• Clues
– Hemodynamic stability
– Previous CBC
– Overt blood loss
9. Treatment of anaemia
• Depends on the cause of anaemia e.g. iron
deficiency anaemia needs iron therapy and
also need treating the underlying cause of iron
deficiency like blood loss.
10. Treatment of anaemia
• B12 /Folate deficiency needs replacement of
those. This deficiency is common in vegetarian
population.
• If bone marrow is involved because of acute
leukaemia, patient need treatment for acute
leukaemia to recover the bone marrow
function.
11. Treatment of anaemia
• In elderly patients anaemia need to be
investigated thoroughly to rule out a bone
marrow condition called myelodysplastic
syndrome (MDS) which is a bone marrow
condition. Treatments are available for this
condition.
• Conditions like acute leukaemia and aplastic
anaemia are serious and need intensive
treatments.
12. Prevention of anaemia
• Diet for iron deficiency: Iron reach diet include
beat root, dates, jaggery, raisins, kidney beans
and red meat
• B12 and folate is available in non-vegetarian
diet mostly and vegetarian people who
become deficient need the replacements in
the form of medicines.
