Yakushima Island is located south of Kyushu in Japan. It is known for its ancient forests containing massive Japanese cedar trees that are over 1,000 years old. In 1993, Yakushima Island's forests were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its outstanding universal natural value as a prime example of a subtropical evergreen forest.
