It has the history of rugby. A SWOT analysis on the sport. Has plans on the feasibility of the league operationally, financially and has a marketing plan for it.
2. Rugby refers to the team sports rugby league and rugby union. Legend claims that
rugby football was started circa 1845 in Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire,
England, although forms of football in which the ball was carried and tossed date
to medieval times. Rugby eventually split into two sports in 1895 when twenty-
one clubs split from the original Rugby Football Union, to form the Northern
Union (later to be named rugby league in 1922) in the George Hotel, Huddersfield,
Northern England over the issue of payment to players, thus making rugby league
the first code to turn professional and pay its players, rugby union turned fully
professional in 1995
3. The Greeks and Romans are known to have played many
ball games, some of which involved the use of the feet.
The Roman game harpastum is believed to have been
adapted from a Greek team game known as "ἐπίσκυρος"
(Episkyros) or "φαινίνδα" (phaininda),which is
mentioned by a Greek playwright, Antiphanes (388–
311 BC) and later referred to
bythe Christian theologian Clement of Alexandria(c.150-
c.215 AD). These games appear to have resembled rugby
football. The Roman politician Cicero (106–42 BC)
describes the case of a man who was killed whilst having
a shave when a ball was kicked into a barber's shop
4. STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES
o Very popular in UK, Australia, France
and New Zealand.
o Is the 6th most popular sport in the
world.
o Is not played in to many countries, in
comparison to football or basketball.
o People may refrain from playing because
it is quite a violent sport.
OPPORTUINITIES THREATS
o Can try to expand to other countries and
try to have leagues to increase the
popularity of the sport.
o Can expand to countries which watch
rugby or follow it on an amateur level.
o Since American Football has evolved
from rugby, it can be considered as a
competitor during the expansion phase.
o Since the other popular sports are played
in many more countries than rugby

7. Since rugby is a very tough sport
to play, so it will be a good idea to
introduce the sport at an early
age. This will help them to
condition to the intensity that is
involved with the sport.
Also, since we will be introducing
the sport in school, there will also
be inter-school tournaments that
will be organised by us.
8. Have it as an after – school practice, 3 days
a week. Since it is in school spilt it to three
categories – primary, secondary and high
school.
After the trial sessions with the school ends
then we can have yearly contract which can
be renewed or cancelled according to the
school and us.
Have it as a round-robin format from the
September to January period as it will take
some time for the student to train and from
February exams will start.
If we can manage an inter-city tournament
than we will take the winning team of each
city and have a knock-out format
tournament.
OPERATIONAL PLAN
SCHOOL PROGRAMMES INTER – SCHOOL TOURNAMENTS
9. There will be two marketing campaigns. One for the school
programmes and the other for the inter-school
tournaments.
School Programmes – By going to to school who have shown
any interest in rugby, and have a counter in school fairs where
schools can approach you and vice- versa. After that you can
give them a trial by having training sessions for a week at
schools that have taken interest.
Inter – School Tournament – For this we can even target
schools that are not linked with us. We can promote this via
email marketing as we would have the databases of schools
when we participate in the school fairs.
10. SCHOOL PROGRAMMES
There will be a set fees per student that the
school will have to pay us. We will charge the
school Rs. 2,000 all inclusive for each student.
The costs that we will have to incur will be for
the coaches, equipment and gear for the
students. The costs will be:
Coaches – 10,000 per month
Equipment - Rs. 2,500 (5 rugby balls)
Gear – Rs. 5,000 for uniforms
INTER – SCHOOL TOURNAMENTS
There will be an registration fees of Rs. 5,000
from each school.
The costs for the tournament will be:
Rent for Ground – Rs. 15K to 20K
Trophies – Rs. 2,500
Decorations – Rs. 5,000
Food & Beverages – Rs. 5,000
Medicines/Ambulance – Rs. 5,000
FINANCIAL PLAN
11. Each city will have a ”City Head” who will be
responsible for all the schools and coaches that
operate within his/her city. Along with the city head
there will be a “Head Coach” and a “Finance Head”
in each city who will report to the city head to make
sure that the operations and financials run
smoothly.
If there are more than 10 schools in a city than a we
will hire one more city head, head coach and
finance head.
If we scale to a bigger level then we can have
regional divisions and if necessary a country head
as well.
12. RISK PLAN
The risks that the academy and the tournament can run into will be:
Many schools will hire us the to create the academy but may not be very interested in
participating in the tournaments.
There might be a higher percentage of schools who are not part of the academy that may
show interest in participating in the inter-school tournaments.
In a city like Mumbai, many schools do not have football fields in order to host the
tournament. This will lead to higher costs to organise the tournament in comparision to
cities like Bangalore or Chennai.
13. To conclude. This entrepreneurship plan is to
introduce rugby at a grassroot level as it is a high
contact sport it takes years for a child’s body to get
conditioned to take that much pain and endurance.
So it is beneficial for everyone that the sport is
introduced to them when they are young.
And to check if they are good at the sport it is
essential for them to implement what they have
learnt via playing tournaments. This will help them
analyse if they have what it takes to go to the next
level or they should just remain at the same level.
14. I would recommend starting with the international
schools in the metropolitan cities as most of them
have football fields within their campuses. This
will allow us to start out company with a smaller
budget. Later on we can try to develop our own
facilities and target schools that do not have
football fields.
For the tournaments as well I would suggest the
same, the schools that are not part of the
programme must have a football field in order to
register for the tournament, and they cannot
charge the organisers for using their football field
and other facilities.
