INOORERO UNIVERSITY
The Reality of the “ AGE’’
 To anyone in the modern world under the age
of
20 the PC the internet and the mobile phone ar
e
commonplace and used in all areas of life.
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
Todays Learning Environment
 The modern world demands an independent
creative thinker that is innovative and able to u
se
information for survival and development
 Availability of resources and tools allows today
s
learners to become independent and innovativ
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
The Knowledge Economy
 The global knowledge economy is transformin
g the nature of the labor market and placing ne
w demands on citizens globally.
 The skills required to not only navigate and sur
vive are known as 21st century skills
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
Technology and 21st century skills
 Teaching methods need to translate into tools and proc
esses
that educators can use to examine discuss and ultimatel
y
improve the education opportunities they provide to stu
dents
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
Government initiatives
 The Government has put in place an ICT policy
since 2006.
 Aims to improve the livelihoods of Kenyans by
ensuring the availability of accessible, affordable
, efficient and reliable ICT services.
 The national policy addresses several sections
among them being Information technology with t
he following objectives:
ICT And Quality
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
 It outlines the use of ICT’s in schools , colleg
es
universities and other educational institutions
in the
country so as to improve the quality of teachi
ng
and learning.
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
Marginalized Groups
ICT’s can play a significant role in equalizing opportu
nities
for marginalized groups and communities.
Paradox
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
 But the paradox is that for those groups that ar
e
unable to cross the technology divide , ICT’s b
ecome yet another means to further marginaliz
e them.
 Yet the presence of technology aided learning
would address some of the issues
How would using
Technology help
Pastoralist Communitie
s?
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
Pastoralist Communities
 The fundamental challenge of never havin
g
competent teachers and adequate learnin
g
materials will be addressed.
Solution?
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
 Education has a major role to play in resolving this pro
blem
Challenges
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
 Inadequate infrastructure( electricity connecti
vity)
in some parts of the slums and rural areas.
 Lack of relevant content for community use.
 Poor attitude towards ICT related developme
nt
interventions
 Lack of coordination among stakeholders.
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
Thus…
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
Unless ICT’s become a part of both
content creation and delivery to thes
e
groups, the disadvantage will deepe
n
and development of these marginali
zed
Digital Divide
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
 Failure to use ICT’s is itself a result of the digital and knowled
ge
divide that exists and this causes are deeply embedded in th
e
complex historical and socio-cultural context of the country.
 The implementation of the vision 2030 and the attempt to pro
vide
a lap top per Kenyan child entering primary school is an atte
mpt
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
The Role of Universities
 The role of universities is to produce highly skilled l
abor
and research output to meet perceived economic ne
eds
 Role is added especially during periods of more
radical change
 Building of new institutions of civil society
 Encouraging and facilitating new cultural values
 Training and socializing members of the new social
The Shift
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
 In pedagogical paradigm to meet this new challeng
e of the type of learner that we call the digital native
 The teacher is a digital migrant since she or he belo
ngs to the earlier century and has come into the ne
w century as an adult
IUPS IBTM
In an effort to meet the need of qualified teachers living in this area,
International University of Professional Studies(Formerly Inoorero Univ.)
has been involved in the training teachers for the postgraduate Certificatio
n in
ICT Based Teaching and Information management.
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
IUPS IBTM
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
 The course offered is IBTM (ICT Based Teaching an
d
Information management).
 This course is offered to teachers and is designed to
equip teachers and educators with appropriate ICT s
kills and
competencies and show them how ICT integration ca
n
enhance the teaching and learning experience.
IUPS IBTM
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
 This course is aligned with the UNESCO competenc
y
framework for teachers and is developed in collabor
ation with the relevant stake holders that is, Ministry
of
Education Science and Technology, Kenya Institute
of
Curriculum Development and the Teachers Service
Commission.
Blackout
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
 Knowledge of ICT’s in the 21st century is the ba
sis of
innovation and technical development and fail
ure
to acquire these skills results in blackout about
in
innovation and development
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
Off the Ivory Tower
 The collaboration between IUPS and NGOs’ came fro
m
last year’s humanitarian Partnerships conference
 where it was clearly understood that the work to be don
e
would greatly be enhanced by collaborative efforts betw
een development agencies who are on the ground impl
ementing
programs that mitigate disaster and conflict and the
subsequent challenges of implementing reconstruction
IBTM Reach
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
 More than 200 students have gone through the IBTM pro
gram
 Some of these teachers come from pastoralist communit
ies
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
The GCSI Maasai Project
 The special focus towards training these teachers who co
me from pastoralist areas is needed as they are most at ri
sk in the digital divide marginalization
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
The place of Training Teachers
Teachers benefit the communities
Teacher student ratio goes one to one
Teachers influence uptake of ICT’s and become
custodians
Teachers plug into the 21st century pedagogy
INOORERO UNIVERSITY
Teachers in line and on-line
 Online communication allow the classroom to open for
24 hrs. a day and accessible to anyone with a connecti
on
 Offline access to well designed LMS can also support
learning in the event that no internet is available
 Teachers and learners start to share and collaborate
allowing the learner to contribute to his own learning jou

•Situation :
- These regions were purely occupied by the MAASAI
community, but because of the superhighway and
outsiders who came to occupy these regions,
the MAASAI community were displaced and
lost their land.
- Now most of them want to settle down,
but their educational standards are too low
and they don’t have any special skills to
make a living.
