To deal with all this change organizations Rethinking IT to speed delivery, improve economics, and drive innovation, and in turn reinventing business, improving operating dexterity, redigning client relationships and uncovering new profit opportunties.
Technology will play a critical role in organizations achieving objectives. In fact, in IBM’s latest CEO study, technology has become the number 1 external factor impacting organizations. Cloud speeds service delivery, and so we now see 60% of CIOs view cloud as critical to their plans. We see organizations leveraging mobile to improve reach of services to clients – with 700m smart phones and tables shipping in 2012 – a 34% increase in a year. We see over 20B machine centric devices now deployed enabling more responsive business operations and business models. And all of these technologies are generating tremendous data with 2.7 zetabytes of digital content in 2012 – an increase of 50% in one year.
IBM is helping organizations embrace bold strategies to continuously optimize increasingly complex & dynamic business services, processes, & relationships: Optimizing with cloud for greater speed and speeding service delivery for one client from as high as 45 days to 20 minutes. Extend service to mobile and web endpoints helping one client increase sales with new promotions from 15% to 75% Deploy Smarter Physical Infrastructures helping one organization recognize & repair over 50% of issues before operations impact Protect and manage data helping one organization reduce the time it takes to backup critical data by 80%
Success is driven through a holistic approach to delivering and managing services that adapts to changing business priorities, and provides: Visibility – so you can see and understand your business in real time Control – so you can transform and adapt while limiting risks Automation – so you can standardize best practices and achieve greater efficiency Lets take a look at how organizations are benefitting from improved Visibility, Control and Automation
IBM’s integrated service delivery & management platform offers the proven capabilities and best practices needed for success based on thousands of client engagements so organizations can: Optimize with cloud – transforming virtualization into a highly standardized and automated platform for IT service delivery Extend service delivery and management to mobile devices and ensure consistent and secure management across mobile and IT endpoints. Deploy smarter physical infrastructures like smart grids for energy and optimize your business operations Protect and manage data to ensure retention and availability for decision making.
As we stated early, nearly 60 % of CIO’s view cloud computing as critical. The question is how to you move from virtualization to cloud? IBM can help you optimize with cloud with IBM SmartCloud Foundation: integrated technologies to build and rapidly scale private cloud environments with unparalleled time-to-market, integration and management On October 11 th , 2011 IBM announced IBM SmartCloud Foundation, a comprehensive set of cloud enabling technologies that provide the foundation for integrated cloud service delivery and management. across private and hybrid cloud models. Incidentally, this same technology also serves as the enabling technology for IBM public cloud services. The Foundation includes a broad array of capabilities from service automation and assurance to secure integration of hybrid, public, and private clouds. In fact, Citigroup is using IBM SmartCloud foundation capabilities to enable IaaS and PaaS today in their own private cloud. Before implementing the technology, delivering infrastructure to their 20,000 users took 45 days. They are now able to take requests directly from users, and deploy infrastructure and software in 20 minutes, a massive improvement service delivery time. Before SmartCloud foundation, they required 1 administrator for every 10 severs. Now they can manage 100 severs with just 1 administrator.
Nearly ½ of all devices accessing applications will be mobile – be that mobile phones, tablets or remote IT endpoints. How will you provide applications on mobile platforms while ensuring all those mobile devices and endpoints are secure and consistently managed along side your traditional IT infrastructure? IBM offers a comprehensive platform to help organizations design, deliver and manage applications and services and manage the lifecycle and security of mobile devices and endpoints. IBM is the only hardware & software-independent vendor that can provide comprehensive coverage of mobile devices for the enterprise. -- from strategic planning to asset mgt to outsourcing, to development of applications to management and security of the devices themselves. Mobile Device Management will become the bridge point between lifecycle mgt and security. Smarter Planet: mobile devices will soon make up a large component of the” instruments” of the “ever more instrumented” world. IBM Endpoint management manages and secures all endpoints – fixed or mobile, physical or virtual – with a comprehensive single server agent solution from IBM. For example clients are grappling with these concerns: How do I make sure my network infrastructure can handle the additional data load from the rapid growth in enterprise mobile device usage? How do I ensure the security of mobile devices as they access more and more sensitive systems? How do I cost-effectively manage the sheer volume of these tiny devices with the complexity of multiple OS platforms, and a mixture of both enterprise and employee-owned devices? As some users begin to replace their laptops with mobile devices entirely, how do I ensure their productivity? To address these issues, we provide: Visual topology across network environment to quickly map interdependencies, view how assets are deployed on the network, and detect service-affecting events Configuration policy enforcement – PIN locks, VPN, e-mail, WiFi, etc. settings to prevent unauthorized access Encryption management Audit trails and change management to identify who last updated the device, and what specific changes were made Integration with single endpoint management console for all endpoint types (server, desktop, laptop, mobile) to minimize infrastructure, FTEs, management tool learning curve Enterprise app store and self-service portal enables end users to support themselves and acquire known authorized apps
The worlds physical infrastructures continue to transform from traditional dumb assets, to smarter physical infrastructures with embedded intelligence. Today, there are over 20 billion machine-centric intelligent devices deployed in the world, not including IT-centric devices. IBM offers a complete set of capabilities to needed to instrument and interconnect today’s smarter infrastructures and manage end to-end service delivery, including integrated asset & facilities management, service desk, event collection and correlation, security and dashboards. With these capabilities organizations can: Predicatively manage the asset lifecycle Monitor the health of smart infrastructures Understand the impact of problems on service Optimize workflow across business & IT operations Track key performance indicators Lets take a look at one example. General Motors had a mix of disparate tools for managing assets across the globe. They lacked an integrated and consistent visibility across those assets increasing their costs. With IBM asset & facilities management solutions, they were able to remove redundant and disparate tools and standardize on a single platform. As a result they have achieved operational excellence & performance at 100 plants world wide They now have visibility into inventory levels & demand across all of their sites which has lead to better control and ability to manage costs.
The worlds digital content has grown to 2.72 zetabytes – a 50 increase from 2011. Organizations are facing an explosion of data from everywhere, including sensors like smart meters and valves, records of client transactions on mobile devices, and GPS tracking information for packages and delivery vehicles. This information is vital for decision making and differentiation, however, it can easily be deleted, stolen or simply misplaced among volumes of useless or redundant data. IBM offers a comprehensive, flexible portfolio of data protection and storage solutions that help organizations understand, classify, protect, and retain data across the enterprise, whether in systems within data centers, in remote endpoints at branch offices, or in deployed desktops and laptop computers. IBM has helped thousands of clients create a more responsive and resilient infrastructure for their businesses. These capabilities include: Data Protection to reduce the amount of data at risk between backups by 90% Unified Recovery Management to configure, monitor and execute all backup/recovery operations Storage Virtualization to improve storage utilization by 30% or more Advanced Storage Resource Management to effectively monitor, manage and troubleshoot Integrated reporting and monitoring to provide visibility, control and automation Ohio Health: Over 8 hospitals supported in a Data Center that was able to implement TSM and perform full backups nightly (a requirement for them, but not for everyone, and we can do incremental (just what’s changed) backups too – in 8 hours. They have made operational improvements saving environmental (power) costs and increasing the success of their nightly backup process by 9%.
When you consider that today’s services are more complex than ever and can rely on a mix of cloud, mobile, smarter physical infrastructures – all generating greater amounts of data, it becomes increasingly important that your service delivery and management capabilities be integrated across these complex infrastructures and across organizational boundaries. Only IBM brings these four sets of capabilities together to enable integrated delivery of business services across complex, interconnected infrastructures.
IBM PULSE 2012 GS205_JThomas_v8 05/22/12 10:35 IBM continues to advance these new and enhanced capabilities across, cloud, mobile, smarter physical infrastructures and data protection and storage. Lets take a look at just a few of these advancements announced since Pulse 2012. 05/22/12
In the past few months, IBM has made significant advances to help clients optimize with cloud. New capabilities help organizations move beyond virtualization to highly automated, cost-effective cloud service delivery. New and enhanced capabilities include the following: SmartCloud Control Desk SmartCloud Monitoring SmartCloud Provisioning SmartCloud Application Performance Manager SmartCloud Continuous Delivery SmartCloud Virtual Storage Center Service Management extensions for Hybrid Cloud Given how critical cloud has become to creating greater agility and competitive advantage, we will explore these in a bit more detail in the next few slides.
So first I'd like to announce a NEW offering, Smartcloud Control Desk. The control desk allows us to holistically manage complex IT processses, including change management, problem management and IT asset lifecycle. Historically some of these capabilities were verticalized in implementation, inhibiting end to end integration. With this offering, we've integrated the traditional capabilities of a service desk, IT asset management and the CMDB to allow for seemless integration across the IT lifecycle. An example of a critical process is change management - the ability to respond to strategic business demands, like a new online marketing campaign or a new industry standard, by aligning corresponding IT implementation effectively. Another example is the IT asset lifecycle where we need a view of assets from procurement into deployment and maintenance. This integrated view gives us both the logical and physical dimensions of assets, enabling effective deployment, maintenance and compliance. Furthermore through our strong integration with enterprise asset management systems, we provide the ability to fully integrate the traditional IT lifecycle with that of the smarter physical infrastructure, bringing the front office together with the back office. IBM PULSE 2012 05/22/12 GS205_JThomas_v8
IBM PULSE 2012 GS205_JThomas_v8 05/22/12 10:35 We are announcing two offerings critical to the Smartcloud infrastructure layer, Smartcloud Monitoring and Provisioning. These offerings enable visibility and control of virtualized environments where workload placement is dynamic and shared infrastructure crosses key elements of servers, storage and networking. Our provisioning offering provides a highly resilient, scalable cloud manager across a range of hypervisors. It provides a consolidated view of the image resources deployed across the enterprise using a federated image library. In addition, we have included tooling to manage creation and patching of simple and composite images. SmartCloud provisioning provides advanced analytics that allow insight into workloads running in the environment and maximizes utilization of virtualized resources, including the ability to easily remediate maintenance issues. Smartcloud monitoring provides insight into the performance of the virtualized servers, storage and networks from the service level to the virtual image. We've added analytics to enable proactive license utilization analysis as well as capacity planning to ensure the infrastructure can support planned workloads. These offerings work together to allow you to easily boot up your cloud environment and scale as needed. Through analytics, we have the ability to proactively identify and manage issues that might occur, optimizing performance. Dutch Cloud, a leading ISP in the Netherlands, uses this capability to provide infrastructure as a service as well as managed storage services to their clients. 05/22/12
As we all know, cloud requires end to end business transformation, creating a stronger need for effective collaboration between development and operations teams. We believe that the beginning of the cloud lifecycle starts in the development phase, extending into QA and production. As a continuation of our devops focus, we are announcing the Smartcloud continuous delivery AS A Beta program. With this offering, we are combining key capabilities of collaborative development delivered with Rational Team Concert with the rapid deployment capability of Smartcloud provisioning to truly enable continuous delivery, supporting business agility. This degree of automation allows us to support patterns based workloads while capturing the deployment topologies associated with those workloads in a systematic fashion, enabling 'infrastructure as code' to become a reality. Combined with our recent GreenHat acquisition, we are able to capture and simulate the characteristics of production environments as part of the continuous QA process. IBM is a stronger consumer of these capabilities within our own development teams as we systematically drive agile throughout our software delivery processes. Hopefully you see this in our roadmap today as we have moved capability from beta level at last year's PULSE event to general availability today. IBM PULSE 2012 05/22/12 GS205_JThomas_v8
Critical to any cloud deployment is the ability to assure highly physical and virtualized cloud infrastructures, applications and services. New IBM SmartCloud Application Performance manager uses new agentless transaction tracking technology to ensure delivery against service level commitments, providing out of the box dashboards which track real time key performance indicators. Expert advice and impact analysis helps operators quickly identify possible root cause along with resolutions, as well as prioritize based on what parts of the user base are impacted.
IBM PULSE 2012 GS205_JThomas_v8 05/22/12 10:35 We've spoken about key capabilities for the private cloud, but many organizations are finding the need to better connect on premise data centers with workload hosted in a public cloud. To enable effective management of these scenarios, we are announcing service management extensions for hybrid cloud, utilizing the cloud integration capabilities of the WebSphere Cast Iron appliance. Through these management extensions, we can now provide integrated monitoring, workload automation and security between the private datacenter and the public cloud. 05/22/12
IBM PULSE 2012 GS205_JThomas_v8 05/22/12 10:35 As Robert and Danny shared yesterday, a few fundamental facts are clear with the mobility topic. The evolution of smart mobile devices is rapid - forever changing the world we live in. The devices are here today in our enterprise and many firms are establishing 'bring your own device to work' policies. This drives an increasing need to address critical issues like corporate data security and lifecycle cost management associated with these devices. As a continuation of our innovation around the Bigfix acquisition, we are extending our capabilities to mobile devices including IOS, Android, Symbian and Windows Phone devices. With this announcement, endpoint manager can now support lifecycle and security management for servers, desktops and mobile devices, providing the most complete coverage in the industry for policy based endpoint control. We've added capability to allow organizations to achieve compliance as they manage the associated incidents, perform risk assessments and complete investigations. Another critical process in the industrialized sector is supply chain processing. We've added capability to improve control in the overall procurement process and to provide more flexibility in managing the cost of inventory, supporting flexible costing methods for valuation. And we've enhanced our industry support for critical areas like transportation, nuclear and Oil and Gas.
IBM PULSE 2012 GS205_JThomas_v8 05/22/12 10:35 Smarter Buildings are a critical budgetary item for many organizations as more than x% of the world's energy consumption will be driven by buildings by 2015. The automation of building management and associated energy concerns is imperative as we saw from . We dramatically improved our capabilities through the integration of the Tririga acquisition. And for those of you who aren't aware, Tririga had its home location here in Vegas, where these large hotel complexes function with the capacity of small cities. Tririga brought strong capabilities around facilities management, real estate portfolio management and energy conservation. Through the integration of this capability with our existing Maximo capability, we have a much more complete solution to tackle this challenging issue. Just this week we announced that the US Air Force has selected IBM smarter buildings software to maximize energy efficiency and automate physical infrastructure from buildings to vehicles to runways. This includes over 600 M square feet of real estate, 100 million square yards of runway and 10 Million acres of property.
Another critical aspect of cloud environments is the visbility and control of the storage fabric. It's been estimated that over the next few years almost 35% of the total worldwide digital data will be related to cloud services. Today we are announcing an early experience program for the Smartcloud virtual storage center. This offering combines storage management and provisioning with storage hardware virtualization. This vendor independent solution allows us to dramatically improve storage utilization through intelligent tiering for the most cost effective model. Through our Easytier capability, we enable granular data identification and movement within logical volumes. This offering is priced on a pay as you grow , terabyte capacity model. So let’s now look at some real client examples: Tulane University, City of Corpus Christi, and Amsterdam Airport.
Streetlights are now IT assets at Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority. Streetlights account for 30-40% of the typical municipal energy budget. And produce a significant amount of CO2 emission. Maybe if every streetlight had a smokestack – you would get the picture The idea is simple: put intelligent monitoring and control in every streetlight cabinet and network them all together into a centralized streetlight management system. The result? Streetlights go on and off exactly when they should – to the minute. Areas where full lighting is not needed can be set to Energy Savings Mode and costs are driven down by 35%. And so are carbon emissions. Streetlight savings: the big benefits Here’s where the savings and energy reduction comes from: • Burn hour optimization – ensure you’re never ‘lighting the day’ • Energy Savings Mode where and when possible • Simplify maintenance and prolong bulb life • All while improving streetlight quality, city-wide

The main concept in PTC is that the train receives information about its location and where it is allowed to safely travel, also known as movement authorities. Equipment on board the train then enforces this, preventing unsafe movement. PTC systems may work in either dark territory or signaled territory and may use GPS navigation to track train movements.
