25. Summary
• Stripe rust resistant winter wheat varieties suitable for
Central Asian countries are increasingly becoming
available through international collaborations
• Policy emphasis needed on seed multiplication and
cultivation of resistant varieties and discourage release
and cultivation of susceptible varieties
• Wheat rust research facilities are improving in the
Central Asia region, positive development to support
international initiative on stripe rust
Central Asia included five countries: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan
Caucasus include three countries: Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia
Many leading winter wheat varieties in Central Asia and the southern Caucasus region are susceptible to stripe rust.
Stripe rust severity on a few widely grown winter wheat cultivars have been presented here.
Our studies in the past two years have shown 28 to 30 grain yield reductions due to stripe rust on widely grown susceptible winter wheat cultivars in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan
In last two years, 6 new improved varieties resistant to stripe rust have been submitted in Uzbekistan
All these varieties originate from IWWIP
These varieties are expected to replace some of the susceptible varieties occupying large acreages
