ILRI in East and Southeast Asia: Summary of current profile and emerging priorities for stakeholder feedback
1. ILRI in East and Southeast Asia
Summary of current profile and emerging priorities
for stakeholder feedback
Stakeholder Consultation
Novotel Siam Square, Bangkok
31 May 2013
2. Objective and outline of the presentation
Objective: To challenge ILRI’s current thinking and
perceptions about the Region, and receive expert
feedback from stakeholders.
Outline:
Perceptions of the Region
Current ILRI projects and staff
Potential priorities for ILRI support to
livestock research
Seeking your feedback
3. Livestock systems in the Region
Some balance between intensive
and more extensive systems
4. Poverty levels in the region
High variation in degree of poverty,
but significant levels remain in some areas
5. The role of agriculture
High continued dependence on agriculture, 16% of
agricultural GDP, greater than SSA

8. Perceptions of the Region
• Dynamic growth generally, even in poorer countries
• Rapidly intensifying systems in many areas, but diversity
• Large projected deficits in supply of livestock products in
future
• Still widespread poverty in some countries
• Large regional trade in livestock, some informal
• Important role for non-ruminants , such as pigs, but
ruminant production growing
• Significant presence of ethnic minorities amongst the
poorest
• Environmental and human health threats due to rapid
system change, emerging disease, and climate change
• Strong research capacity among partners, but variable
9. ILRI and Partner Projects in the Region
• Pig Risk in Vietnam (HSPH, HUA, etc) – addressing food safety and
zoonotic risk along pig value chain
• REVALTER (CIRAD) – systems analysis of potential livestock development
scenarios in Vietnam
• EcoZEID (CMU, HSPH, GMU, etc) – joint research and capacity
development on ecohealth approaches to zoonotics emerging diseases
• Joint Lab with Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science (Beijing) – joint
research on animal and forage genetics, etc
• Management of indigenous pigs and poultry in Vietnam (GEF, HUA,
MARD,etc)
• CGIAR Research Program on Humidtropics (led by ICRAF) – Yunnan,
Vietnam, Lao PDR, Cambodia, Thailand
• CGIAR Research Program on Livestock and Fish – Smallholder Pigs Value
Chains in Vietnam (HUA, many others)

13. Current or planned ILRI priorities for the
Region
• Smallholder pig systems
• Emerging infectious zoonotic diseases,
OneHealth/EcoHealth
• Food safety along livestock value chains
• Value chain development options for linking smallholders
• Sustainable intensification of crop-livestock systems
• Mitigating environmental threats of dynamic change
• Management of indigenous animal genetic resources
• Livestock policy and trade
• Partnerships for joint development of new bioscience as
well as supporting capacity development in research and
policy
14. Looking for your feedback and guidance
• What is ILRI’s appropriate role in relation to the
Regional priorities and capacity?
• Who are additional key partners?
• What are critical first steps?
