If asked to describe what the list above has in common, most people would probably
first think of what well-to-do people do to relax, maybe while at a spa� However, to
those suffering from chronic headaches, cluster headaches, or migraines, this list has
quite a different connotation�
For people who suffer from these conditions, their caregivers, family members, and
friends, severe headaches are no day at the spa� For those who are fortunate enough
not to suffer from severe headaches, it is nearly impossible to fully understand what
those who do are going through� It’s very easy to say something like “come on, it is just a
headache, take a couple of aspirin and you will be fine�” But that’s simply not the case�
Headaches have a significant impact on the economy in addition to the individual�
According to a World Health Organization report, Atlas of headache disorders and
resources in the world 2011, in the United Kingdom approximately 25 million working
or school days are lost every year due to migraines alone�
Prior to GSK’s introduction of injectable Imitrex (sumatriptan succinate) in 1992, severe
headache suffers had very little at their disposal that offered relatively quick relief� What
makes treating severe headaches so complicated is the myriad of triggers that can
bring on a severe headache� Triggers can range from food allergies to stress to sunlight
to certain types of motion to menstrual cycles�
This research report was designed to give drug developers and marketers information
from severe headache suffers regarding their current treatment satisfaction, their
unmet needs, and provide insight into their likelihood to enroll in clinical trials�
If you could tell the pharmaceutical industry one thing about living with cluster, migraine,
or tension headaches and how they might be able to help, what would you tell them?
That I don’t know what it is like to live like everyone else. I have had these migraines
since a teenager. I don’t go a day without pain. I don’t know what it is to feel “good” like
normal people. I don’t know what it is to wake up without pain or sleep the entire night
through. I don’t know what it is like to let my children play and scream without shushing
them because my head hurts. Or to go outside during a sunny day, ever, because it
causes a migraine. Or to be in a place with a lot of people because all the smells trigger
a migraine. Or to have the medication not make me feel tired and foggy on top of still
