In Act 3 Scene 1 of Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern report to Claudius and Gertrude that they have been unable to determine the cause of Hamlet's strange behavior. Claudius and Polonius plan to spy on Hamlet during his confrontation with Ophelia. Hamlet speaks to Ophelia harshly, denying having loved her, which causes Claudius to decide to send Hamlet away to England in hopes it will help him.
