Mass tourism – good or
        bad?

By the end of the lesson you will
have evaluated the good and bad
points to mass tourism and linked
        these to KENYA.
When…? Where…?

What…?

Who…? Why…?
What does...
• Mass tourism mean?
Copy out the following definitions.

Mass tourism refers to a large number of
visitors, often on package holidays with
accommodation and travel included going to
  one destination. (Development /
  Consolidation phase)

Ecotourism involved protecting the
environment and the way of life of local
people.
Explain how this picture sums up mass
               tourism.
What are the good and bad
   points about mass tourism?
• Working in pairs, try and fill out YOUR
own ideas first in the table....

• Lets share them!

• What about.......
What about?
• Brings in money
• Creates jobs for local people – increases income of industries that supply tourism

• Young people are likely to stay
• Improved roads, communications and infrastructure
• Money from tourism reinvested into community projects

• Money from tourism reinvested into protecting the environment.

• Profit is kept by large foreign travel companies, rather than helping the local economy
• Jobs are badly paid and seasonal
• Traffic congestion
• Behaviour of tourists can offend local people – drunkness, clothing, etc
• Green house gases from air travel = global warming
• Increase litter / pollution
• Destruction of local habitats, e.g. game parks / coral reefs
Case Study 2

Tourism in an LEDC - Kenya
LION SAFARI

LANDROVER TOURISTS
Location
• Kenya is in East Africa. It is an LEDC.
  It has environments that attract
tourists, for example game parks and
  the coast.
• It’s economy benefits from tourism
because of foreign exchange (over 20%
of all foreign earnings). Kenya is
  becoming more developed.

         Richer Catalyst for other industries
                   More jobs
                               e.g. transport, communications
What attracts people to Kenya?
• Watch the film and jot down any
  ATTRACTIONS – physical or human?
Links to Kenya.....
• Card sort activity....
What is the future?
• Reducing the negative impacts of
  tourism?
• Walking / horseback trails instead of car safaris (reduces pollution
  / congestion)
• White water rafting instead of damaging safaris
• Limit number of people visiting sensitive areas, e.g. coral reefs
• Providing bins to reduce litter

“Maintaining” tourism?
1. Kenya has launched an advertising campaign in Russia
2. An airstrip is planned for Ruma National Park – more accessible.
£8million planned to improve roads, bridges and airstrips.
3. Visa fees were cut by 50% - cheaper to visit. Scrapped for under
   16s – family holiday…..
Homework,due: Wednesday 16th
