1. 5S is simply a tool to get a clean, tidy and
well organized workplace. At its most basic
it can be described as having a place for
everything and everything is in its place
2. A place for everything and everything is in its place

5. Sort means to go through all the things in the
workplace and keep only what is needed and
used often.
Everything else is stored or got rid of.
The goal is to get rid of anything that is not
needed for the workplace.
The result wanted is a tidy workplace.
Sort
6. Questions to ask:
• What is it?
• When was it last used?
• Is it important to the workplace?
• If it is inventory (stock), is it the smallest
amount to complete the planned work?
Sort
7. Things to try:
• Take “Before” pictures
Red Card
– Unneeded items identified and red carded
Sin Bin
– Red Carded items moved to a Sin Bin
– Unused Red Carded items removed after a pre-set
time
• Take “After” pictures
Sort
13. Shine means to get the workplace clean,
maintain its appearance, and keep it clean.
• The whole team participates and works
together, each team has a regular schedule for
routine cleaning as well as deep cleaning.
• Once the work area, tools or utensils, and
equipment are clean, they need to be kept
clean.
Shine
14. The result wanted is a clean workplace, one that
shines, and reduces any sources of dirt and/or
contamination.
Shine
15.
16. Questions to ask:
• What is clean?
• What are the correct cleaning chemicals and
solutions to use?
• What is the correct cleaning equipment to
use?
• What Personal Protective Equipment must be
worn (for example gloves, safety glasses)?
Shine
17. Questions to ask:
• Is equipment switched off or locked out to
prevent safety risks?
• What are the possible safety risks (for example
sharp edges, chemicals)?
• What are the sources of dirt and/or
contamination?
– How can the sources be reduced?
Shine
18.
19. Organize and label facilities and equipment.
Pipes, conduits, compressed air hoses, gas
cylinders and electrical systems are clearly named
and labelled.
Tools and utensils are kept close to the point of
use, they are organized and labelled.
Gauges and indicators are marked so that correct
operation can be seen at a glance.
Put borders around equipment and objects (like
pallets) that rest on the floor, and walkways, work
areas, and storage locations.
Set In Order
20. Alert people to possible hazards to prevent an
unsafe workplace.
Hazard warnings and safety instructions
clearly shown where needed.
Locations for lockout systems, eye wash
stations, first aid stations, and safety showers,
etc., are clearly marked.
The correct PPE to be worn is clearly shown
for each work area.
Set In Order
21. The latest work instructions and procedures are
available in the workplace.
Use visual aids (like one point lessons) to help
prevent mistakes.
Visually show quality standards.
Show quality performance trends in graphs.
Show examples of good and bad quality.
Set In Order
22. Things to do:
• Audit the current workplace.
• Make a list of ideas:
To reduce waste, for example – excess movement of
people or materials;
To add more visual workplace aids to reduce mistakes;
To measure the affect of changes (for example the
increase in the number of unit made in a shift; the
reduction in injuries; the increase in the number of
Right First Time batches made)
Set In Order
23. The result wanted is a workplace that is visually
instructive and is the source of the least possible
waste and mistakes.
Set In Order
24.
25.
26. • Once the improved workplace systems are in
place, a “standard” set of procedures is needed
to make sure they are always done in the same
way.
• All workers can contribute ideas to update and
improve procedures, checklists, work instructions
and the like.
• Communicate, inform and educate the teams on
the new standards.
• Visual aids.
Standardize
27.
28. The purpose of Sustain is to keep moving
forward with the successes of the first 4S’s.
The result wanted is a workplace and teams of
workers that automatically correct non-
conformities, control and adjust their own
activities, and continuously improves.
Sustain
29. Things to do or try:
Create a benchmark (or targets) for all activities.
Perform regular audits.
Measure the results.
Show the results in graphs or visual aids.
Allow workers to attend seminars, training
courses or visit other similar companies to get
new ideas.
Create a culture of listening to the ideas of all
workers.
Sustain
