Job Overview and Purpose
The CN is responsible for providing professional leadership through the supervision of the patient care
team, and the maintenance of clinical standards and quality of patient care within the unit or
department during their span of duty.
The CN will be expected to contribute to the broader hospital and corporate strategic and operational
agenda.
Working in conjunction with the Senior Charge Nurse plays a crucial role in delivering day-to-day levels
of excellence in service provision & development across the Unit and department.
The CN will contribute to developing ward/department service standards and ensure they are
consistently met. Acting as a role model, they will deliver high clinical and operational performance
standards by developing and supporting the ward/department based staff.
Responsible for the implementation and delivery of age appropriate patient care congruent with the
mission, vision and values of the Organization.
Responsible for ensuring nursing staff adhere to the Code of Conduct and Scope of Practice of the
regulatory body.
The CN is responsible for proactively assisting the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) in meeting the
strategic objectives of Nation Hospital (NH). Ensuring the delivery of International standards of care in
accordance with established International/National practices, policies and procedures.
With the Nursing and Midwifery leadership you will be accountable for the formulation, development,
implementation and monitoring of the Hospital Nursing/ Midwifery Strategy within your clinical area.
The CN is responsible for all aspects of performance related to their unit and departments whilst
maintaining and contributing to the broader hospital and corporate strategic and operational agenda.
The post holder will contribute to developing ward/department service standards and ensure they are
consistently met. Acting as a role model, they will deliver high clinical and operational performance
standards by developing and supporting the Registered Nurses.
Working with the clinical practice team and nursing leadership assist in the development, education and
practice and assisting in the achievement of Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) process.
Responsible for the implementation and delivery of age appropriate patient care in your area of practice
congruent with the mission, vision and values of the Organisation. Ensuring Nursing/Midwifery staff adhere
to the Professional Code of Conduct and Scope of Practice of the regulatory body.
A key element of this role will be engaging with clinicians across the organisation to achive an efficent and
effective the Nursing/Midwifery service that meets the needs of the organisation. This will involve
developing key interfaces with all clinicians.
The post holder will take the initiative in actively promoting the image and reputation of the hospital and
individual departments through the use of effective interpersonal skills and sound communication skills to
create and maintain the NH brand.
To promote the hospital values and the values of the Medical University of Vienna.
Nation Hospital (NH) is a “green field” project which is currently under construction. The commissioning
phase of the hospital has already commenced and the presence and involvement of the Nursing/Midwifery
leadership is an essential element at this stage to ensure the facility is fit for purpose.
Key Responsibilities
Institutional Strategy and Leadership Objectives
 Motivate, develop and empower staff, leading by example and ensuring that high standards of
care are delivered, monitored and reported.
 Be instrumental in assisting the Heads of Departments, consultants and the Hospital to achieve
its service development plans, performance targets and corporate strategy.
 In conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team, ensure that there is an embedded philosophy
and practice of continuous improvement.
 Provide senior professional, operational and clinical leadership to the Heads of Departments
to ensure there is continual assessment of patient standards, patient pathways and then drive
though changes to ensure the clinical outcomes and patient experience continually improve.
This will include supporting the achievement of designated areas of contribution to ward level
performance targets.
 Supports an environment that allows staff to acquire skills, identify and develop new ideas that
ensures commitment to the organizational goals.
 Participates in the recruitment process when necessary.
 Takes a lead role in their unit in assisting managing disasters, codes, and incidents as per the
Organisation’s policy and procedures.
 Provides leadership in critical thinking, conflict management and problem solving.
 Provides leadership in support of evidence-based practice, quality initiatives and promotion of
a healthy workplace environment on wards and departments.
 Maintains appropriate contact with the organisations hospital supervisor providing timely and
accurate information.
 Monitors and evaluates appropriate utilisation of staff in collaboration with the nursing team on
the unit and department.
 Responsible to ensure that bed allocation and staff skill mix is appropriate for patient condition.
 Collaborates with personnel from non-nursing department/disciplines regarding issues that
may negatively impact patient care; facilitate solutions as needed
 Participates in committees, task forces that are interdisciplinary or interdepartmental; may be
required to chair, co-chair or lead such groups.
 Acts as a change agent for the organization.
 Provides input into Nursing Executive level decisions and supports and works in partnership
with decision makers in setting the strategic direction for the nursing/midwifery department.
 Ensure that all staff have an annual appraisal and agree clear objectives against which they
are managed appropriately.
 Enhance the performance, capability and development of others through formal and informal
interactions.
 Motivate staff by increasing their commitment to the Hospitals objectives, clarifying the vision
and developing effective team working.
 Ensure all mandatory training is delivered within the unit and department for all non-medical
staff and ongoing training to enable them to competently and safely do their roles.
 Actively manage first-line HR activities to ensure staff are appropriately managed.
 Facilitates effective patient flow utilising bed capacity and staffing resources appropriately.
 Monitors and reviews staff skill mix on the unit and department and in accordance with patient
acuity uses available information to align staffing and workload and communicates with the
hospital supervisor as required.
 Ensures that quality standards of nursing documentation are maintained according to
organisational policy.
 Communicates with all unit(s) /departments as appropriate, to maximise efficiency and to
expedite the admission, transfer and discharge process.
 Uses information technology to access, transmit and produce information as necessary.
 Promotes continuity of care that is patient centred, outcome oriented and focused towards
discharge planning.
 You will act as the Hospital designated deputy for the Senior Charge Nurse as required.
 Work with members of the senior leadership and Executive teams to formulate and ensure delivery
of the Hospital corporate strategies, clinical strategy and strategic plans.
 To lead as a role model Nursing/ Midwifery Professionals across the Hospital promoting a culture
of compassion, candour and professional accountability.
 To work with the Executive team in ensuring Safe nursing and clinical practice and that the Hospital
follows evidence based best practice for infection control.
 To work closely with the CNO on Quality Assurance and Regulation and the Learning and
Development team to ensure delivery of the hospitals Risk Strategy and Clinical Risk Training
Strategy. to lead programmes and initiatives to reduce and manage risk and harm to Patients.
 To undertake serious incident investigations as required and lead on the response to
recommendations and lessons to be learned from investigations and external and regulatory
reviews where Nursing/ Midwifery has come under scrutiny.
 To work closely with the Chief Pharmacist to ensure that medicines management practice is safe,
effective and evidence based.
 To take part in the Charge Nurse on call rota, providing out of hours managerial support and cover
to the organisation.
Position-Specific Responsibilities
 Monitors and evaluates the quality of nursing care provided.
 Actively participates in Joint Commission International accreditation activities.
 Undertakes patient and environmental risk assessments and documents corrective action to
improve patient outcomes as required.
 Audits compliance with organisational documentation standards.
 Develops and achieves annual performance criteria/goals in conjunction with the Line
Manager
Commissioning /Pre-Opening Responsibilities
Creates and executes the pre-opening clinical services plan for Nursing/Midwifery Services.
Ensure Nursing/Midwifery Services comply with HAAD and JCIA requirements.
Contributes to the HIS customization and implementation.
Performs other related duties incidental to the commissioning tasks described, directly or through
delegation
The Charge Nurse will be expected to ensure compliance with the requirement of the Health and
Safety regulations of the organisation.
