A BOUT THE R EPORT

WHAT IS THIS REPORT ABOUT?

This report analysis the data on elementary school education in India. It covers the data
across all the schools in India, and analyses it to infer various pattern in schools.

The data used for analysis has been sources from various educational databases and
portal of the Government of India. The data covers elementary school education
comprising of class I to VIII — which is considered as compulsory schooling under the
Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (also known as Right to
Education Act), 2009 of Government of India.

DEFINITIONS OF TERMS USED IN THE REPORT

School — An educational institution, which is providing education in classes I to VIII, and
beyond, as per Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)

Government Managed School — A school, which is administered by local, state, or
central government

Private Aided School — A school, which is privately managed, but receives some
funding from the government to pay teachers’ salaries and other expenses

Private Unaided School — A private school, which has not received any land, building,
equipment or other facilities, either free of cost or at concessional rate from the
government.

A NALYSIS OF S CHOOL E DUCATION IN I NDIA

There are approximately X.XX million schools in India, as per Government of India’s 2011
figures. While XX.X% of these schools are in urban areas, a majority XX.X % are in rural
areas. Further XX.X % of the total schools are managed by central and state
governments, while only XX.X % are private schools. Out of the total private schools,
XX.X % comprises of Private Unaided Schools, while XX.X % are private aided schools.

The government schools employ XX.X % of the total XX.X million teachers, who teach
XX.X % of the total XX.X million students in India. The private schools, on the other hand
have XX.X % of the total XX.X million teachers, and impart education to XX.X % of the
total XX.X million students. XX.X % of the total students go to schools in urban areas,
and are taught by XX.X % of the total teachers. While the remaining XX.X % go to schools
in rural areas and are taught by XX.X % of the total teachers.

Of the total schools in urban areas, XX.X % are run by government, while XX.X % are
privately managed. In case of rural areas, a majority XX.X % are run by government,
while only XX.X % are privately managed. XX.X % of the students residing in urban areas
go to private schools, while only XX.X % go to government schools. The trend is opposite
in rural areas, where only XX.X % of the students go to private schools, while XX.X % are
enrolled in government schools.

XX.X % of the total schools have functional computers, and XX.X % are providing
computer–aided learning. Further, XX.X % of the schools have playgrounds, XX.X % go
for medical checkup of students, XX.X % impart preprimary education, and XX.X % are
residential schools.
