What is Resume
A resume is a short, concise document that states information regarding your
education, skills , experience, accomplishments and job related interests
• A marketing tool
o Your first tool for building a career
o The first impression a prospective employer has of you
o A selling tool that allows you to highlight
to an employer how you can contribute to the company
• Request for an interview
o Purpose of the resume is to get you an interview

Resume Format
• Chronological
o Highlight your work experience in reverse
chronological order
o Highlights career progression
o The most widely used format for working
professionals
o Advantages
• Easier to understand your job history
• Helps the name of a previous

• Much more difficult to highlight what

Resume Photo
• The picture should be high quality. At best you have a picture taken
by a professional photographer. No pictures taken by a webcam,
mobile or tablet devices or passport size pictures (taken for Visa
purpose)
• The picture should be a portrait, taken from the front. Avoid
exaggerated poses or hair dues, as well as glasses or jewelry which
hide too much of your face
• Dress Professionally
o Make sure that your photo depicts you in a manner appropriate
for your field. Typically this means a dress shirt or blouse, a shirt
and tie, or even a suit
o Choose solid dark colors like blue or black
o Avoid white; it can make you appear washed out
o Avoid wearing too much makeup, or any over-the-top,
distracting hairstyles and jewelry
• Don’t be afraid to smile. You will be taken seriously if you smile in
your picture
• Select a Current Photo. Do not include a dated photo. Use a current
picture so people aren’t surprised when they meet you in person

• Use white or cream 8 ½” x 11” paper, black ink, printed
on one side only
• Stick to 10-12 font size
• Times New Roman and Arial are standard fonts
• Use bolding, italics, all CAPS, underlining, etc.

• Why do I need to write a cover letter?
o Use the cover letter to focus attention on elements
of your background that are particularly relevant to
the company
o Letter acts as your verbal introduction to the
employer
• Send it to a person, not a place
• First sentence should tell why you are writing
• Highlight your skills
o Use two to three paragraphs to given in-depth
description of your selling points
• Close with a promise of action
o If possible, indicating that you will be contacting
them in the near future to set up a mutually
acceptable meeting time or to further discuss your
qualifications

• Prepare a separate reference sheet
o Use same paper as the resume itself
o Bring reference sheet (and resume) with you to any
interviews, job fairs, career breakfasts, …

o Try to arrange contact information in pleasing fashion
