rigid alternate bearing materials to function at temperatures from -4°C
to 70°C
•
High temperature resistance and negligible swelling characteristics of
GMP composite rubber bearings enable them to operate at a closer
running clearance than any other bearing material. Abrasion
measured according to DIN 53516 - RT(mm3 loss) : 30-80 & 150°C(mm3
loss) : 50-80.
•

Water Lubricated Rubber Bearings
for Industrial Pumps
16. WHY RUBBER BEARINGS ARE PREFERRED FOR VERTICAL PUMPS
1.
LOW FRICTION: At operating shaft speeds, coefficient of friction between wet rubber and metal
matches that of ball bearings (0.005)
2.
WATER WEDGE FORMATI ON: Even at slow shaft surface speeds (1.2 mtrs/sec), a
hydrodynamic film is formed at the rubber-metal interface due to non compressibility of water
and its tendency to adhere to metal while not adhering to rubber. This results in great reduction
of friction, wear and heat.
3.
WEAR RESISTANT RUBBER: The softness of rubber helps reduce shaft/sleeve wear while the
toughness of rubber protects the bearing itself from wearing off.
4.
REDUCTION IN VIBRATION & NOISE: Vertical pumps have number of stages and long shafts
without adequate structural support below mounting floor. This makes the system flexible at operating
speeds of the shaft and can cause high vibration and noise. Unlike rigid bearings, soft and wear
resistant rubber bearings can absorb and reduce the vibration greatly. Vibration damping quality
of rubber bearings is a very important factor that cannot be overlooked in a flexible vertical pump
system.
5.
ACCOMMODATES MINOR MISALIGNMENT AND IMBALANCE: Even a well aligned and
balanced system tends to loose its balance over a period of operation on account of the uneven
wear of movable parts. Unlike rigid bearings, resilience of rubber can accommodate minor
imbalances. The flexibility of rubber also permits the shaft
GMP PUMP BEARING
to turn on its center of rotation even when it is
eccentric with its geometric center.
6.
LOW SHAFT/SLEEVE WEAR BY SAND & SILT:
The sand particles get pressed by the
harder metal sleeve into the softer rubber
and roll into the grooves by the rotary
motion of the sleve. The water flow flushes
out the sand particles.

IN LIGHT OF NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN RUBBER TECHNOLOGY
Replacing flexible rubber which can control shaft wear and vibration with rigid bearing material
is no more desirable. To day rubber without sacrificing vibration damping and wear resistant
properties can operate at closer running clearance and allow start up dry run upto 2 min.
1.
HIGH TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE: GMP COMPOSITE RUBBER BEARINGS can
match the temperature range of other rigid alternate bearing materials to function at
temperatures from -40°C to 150°C.
2. CLOSER RUNNING CLEARANCE: High temperature resistance and negligible swelling
characteristics of GMP composite rubber bearings enable them to operate at closer
running clearance than any other bearing material. Abrasion measured according to DIN
53516 - RT(mm3 loss) : 30-80 & 150°C(mm3 loss) : 50-80.
3. LONGER DRY START UP: GMP composite bearings allow a dry start up of 2 min which is
adequate for vertical pumps.
4. G M P P U M P B E A R I N G S C A N D O I T :
Inherent qualities of rubber like
flexibility, vibration damping, and wear
r e s i s t a n c e h a v e b e e n factored while
making vertical pumps used by you. Now
GMP COMPOSITE RUBBER BEARINGS
have acquired the capability to operate
at higher temperatures without sacrificing
the qualities of rubber for dry run and
closer running clearance.

18. Rubber bearings have nearly 100 years proven in record as the most suitable water lubricated
bearings. The efficiency of water lubricated rubber bearings encouraged industrial pump designers
to adopt them in vertical shaft water pumps. Today, most vertical pumps in use as well as those
being designed have rubber bearings as standard components. In addition to bearing qualities
rubber greatly reduces vibration and wear of shaft by abrasive particles in the medium.
Established in 1979, GMP is
manufacturing to ISO 9001:2008
quality system requirements. With
over 30 years experience in design
and manufacture of water lubricated
rubber bearings – GMP PUMP
BEARINGS are recognised for their
quality & performance in standard and
non-standard sizes. Our location and
local support team enables a faster

Bearing selection :
Normally bearing length is 4 times of shaft diameter.
Deviations are acceptable if load requirements permit.
Load Capacity is 35 psi x Bearing Area.
Bearing Area = Shaft Ø x Bearing length.
Example in Metric size :
Shaft dia 100 x length 400 = 40000 sq.mm. Bearing Area.
Load Capacity = 40000 sq.mm x 0.0246 kg/sq.mm = 984 kg.
Example in Imperial Size :
Shaft dia 3.937” x length 15.748” = 62” sq.inch. Bearing Area.
Load Capacity = 62 sq.inch x 35 kg/sq.in = 2170 lbs.
Established in 1979, GMP have over three decades of experience in the
manufacture of Rubber Bearings for propeller shafts of marine vessels and
impeller shafts of pumps. Smooth rubber surface, when lubricated with
water, matches the extremely low friction of oil lubricated metal bearings
like ball bearings. To this inherent property of rubber other essential bearing
qualities are added at GMP by skillful engineering and processing. Thus
GMP Bearings are resistant to wear, corrosion and swelling in sea water.
They absorb shock and vibration. Their grooves are designed for optimum
water flow to cushion the shaft. They are tough enough to meet the load and
their strong bonding is fail-safe. In the manufacture of GMP Bearings US
Navy specifications are followed as standard.
