It’s my pleasure to get to speak with you today about CA ARCserve r16. We are very excited about this release because it is a new and radical way of securely protecting your organization’s valuable systems and data.
Let’s take a look at the issues that we’ve been coming across in the market today. As we have gone out and spoken with our customers and partners, we keep hearing the same thing over and over again. Data growth is growing incredibly fast and they are all trying to figure out how to keep up with it as well as protect it. According to a 2010 Gartner Group study, data capacity, on average is growing at 40 to 60 percent year over year; primarily due to regulatory factors that require appropriate retention of information. We found that most IT organizations are worried about four key areas: When it comes to Managing costs, they want to be able to: Reduce cost of acquiring, maintaining and supporting their disaster recovery investment Protect their intellectual property in a cost efficient way Reduce system downtime that affects their top and bottom lines They are also trying to figure out, what solution has the right set of capabilities for their organization today as well as for their future. Up to this point, many companies have been piecing together products from various vendors in order try to achieve a holistic data and system protection solution. The challenge with that is that these various solutions are typically not designed to work with one another. At the end of the day, they are wanting their data protection solution to help them: Meet their recovery time and recovery point SLAs and disaster recovery strategies Maximize protection while simplifying the IT environment Ensure scalability as their company grows and needs change and evolve And as organizations evolve due to growth or new business initiatives, IT is expected to keep up and ensure that new, current, and legacy systems stay online and allow transactions to continue and process securely. So what is IT facing? They’re now needing to: Better manage a mix of physical & virtual systems with multiple operating systems and applications Address disaster recovery needs with fewer point solutions and are looking to consolidate to one solution Scale to meet their current requirements as well as emerging environments Because of these needs, we see IT organizations are wanting to find a way to quickly and easily adopt the new innovations that are continuing to become adopted in the industry. Their hope is that they can: Leverage and maximize the benefits of virtualization and the cloud Minimize risks and automate processes to support other growth initiatives Add new technology as necessary to keep up with the modern IT infrastructure The bottom line is that change is constant and unavoidable and is it is important to be able to be flexible enough to be able to adapt and take advantage of more efficient ways of protecting your data, applications, and systems. This not only will help keep your costs down, but also keep you competitive and better equipped to serve your customers needs. Finding the right vendor that demonstrates industry leadership and expertise is key to help you achieve a data protection strategy and process that will address the needs of your organization today as well as years from now.
In recent surveys, CIOs communicated some top concerns when considering to move to the cloud. These concerns were: Risk They want to know if their information is truly protected when it is transported and stored in a cloud environment. Cost How much is this going to cost me? How do I manage my costs when going to the cloud. How much can I save by leveraging cloud technologies? But on the other hand, how can I get transparency and be able to have complete visibility and foresight as to the costs associated with cloud computing charges. Time They must keep their business up and running at all times. They cannot afford any hiccups and must know that their IT staff can effectively “do more with less” without compromising business uptime. The key thing here is that they must focus on all 3 of these criteria equally. For example, if you just focus on time, you may end up spending too much and negating the advantages that faster service delivery brings to your organization. If you just focus on risk, you may not be able to meet the time demands of the organization. Our solutions and capabilities can help you apply the proper emphasis on all 3 criteria equally and in doing so, optimize the delivery of business services to your customers.

So let’s drill down a bit more on these three key areas of CA ARCserve that makes it so compelling. So when we refer to comprehensive protection, we’re really providing you the ability to protect your customer’s information and data from all aspects: from files and folders, to applications and databases, to entire system operating systems; regardless if they are in a physical or virtual environment. The next thing we address with our comprehensive protection is the HOW. How would you like to protect all this intellectual property that we just outlined? Well it depends. Each organization is different in nature. They each have their own goals and objectives and structures. The great thing is CA ARCserve is flexible so that it can adapt to the HOW. Whether you’re ok with file-by-file backups with de-duplication or are needing a hot disk-level snapshot or continuous replication and high availability. It’s not an issue for CA ARCserve. Next, is the WHERE. With the ability to store your customer’s critical information to basically every type of media there is, it really depends on the strategies that are best suited for your business. And that is determined by the level of backup and recovery that you’re looking for. For instance, pushing TBs and TBs of data to the cloud directly may not be the right option. But perhaps creating a data protection strategy that creates a great hybrid approach of a physical disk locally and offloading incrementals or de-dupd data to the cloud may be a better approach. This is just one example. Again, we provide you and your customers the options and with the expertise of CA ARCserve’s staff and partners, you’ll be able to address your goals. Finally, if you think about it, the backup is important, BUT it’s the ability to quickly restore that really matters! So WHAT is it that you’re needing to restore? Well, whether it’s a complete Unix, Linux, or Windows OS, or an application or database, Email, or even single files and folders, you can be sure that you’ll be able to get to your information quickly and recover and resume business. All this can be achieved using a central management tool so that you can leverage less IT staff to administer local and remote locations.
As I mentioned earlier, this is truly a revolutionary release of CA ARCserve. When you look across the industry, you will see that CA ARCserve is unique in it’s complete offering. What I mean by this is first looking at the complete protection it provides. We are the only vendor to provide a solution that spans across the data protection spectrum. From simple file backup, and hot snapshot incrementals for disaster recovery, and high availability; we’re able to address the level of data protection an organization will need. In addition, our solutions are now all cloud-enabled so that if you are now moving your data protection to the cloud or are looking to do so in the future, you can be sure that CA ARCserve will work very well in a hybrid environment of mixed on prem and off prem assets such as tape, disk, virtual environments, and of course cloud. We now have a unified data services architecture that is scalable and open which allows organizations, service providers and 3 rd party software vendors to connect to and interoperate with CA ARCserve via web 2.0 services. This is powerful as well because our own CA ARCserve solutions interoperate in a very cohesive way. Since all the components of CA ARCserve are built on this architecture, they are modular and can easily be added to your data protection environment. This is key for when you are needing to bolster your protection, for instance if you are using ARCserve backup and D2D now and needing to add replication and high availability, you can simply introduce it into the data protection scheme. To add to that, we offer licensing that makes it very easy to get started. 1 sku. 1 licencse and your customers have access to all the components of CA ARCserve. There is no hassle in having to count licenses or servers, because our Managed capacity program allows you to license ARCserve based on the TBs of data you are protecting. No other vendor can offer you so much under one sku.
So lets look at the unified architecture. As I mentioned this is a scalable and modular architecture that allows you to “add as you grow”. Since it leverages web services, it is important to note that your ability to streamline the administration of your customer’s data protection and systems management will become more fluid and you’ll recognize the benefit in having your various tools “talk” to one another and leverage from each other. So as an example, today CA ARCserve components are built on this architecture and interoperate nicely, especially with the Central reporting and Protection management capabilities. Looking ahead, you’ll be able to manage and interoperate with an RMM solution or other remote management platform or even a custom platform you’ve built for your business.

As we developed CA ARCserve we focused on some key technological areas that our customers and partners had communicated as important.
Let’s start with virtualization. Virtualization has clearly ushered in a new way of doing data protection; making it possible for small to enterprise-sized organizations to reap the benefits of lowered administration and hardware costs. With support for Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware, and Citrix XenServer, CA ARCserve service providers can now provide comprehensive protection for their customer’s entire virtual infrastructure.
What do WE mean by comprehensive virtual protection? As you can see we are taking advantage of every level of protection there is. NO longer do you have to install a client on each virtual machine. Simply take a snapshot at a host level and you have an efficient way to protect all those environments in one step. In addition, since you can create a backup, there are many possible ways you can leverage that within a virtual environment. You can convert an image, on a scheduled basis, to VMDK or Hyper-v. We then preregister those with the hypervisor to allow a new session to be up and running. Many have appreciated the ability to detect if the original server has gone down and the ability to bring up the virtual environment within minutes. If it is only a file that you’re needing, leveraging a virtual environment using an ARCserve image backup is certainly simple and easy as well.
Many partners are in the process trying to help their customers figure out how they can leverage the cloud in order serve their organization’s data protection needs; especially when security, speed, and cost are concerns. A recent survey conducted by the Aberdeen Group indicates that 66% of those using the cloud for data storage are using it for disaster recovery and backup. The same report indicates that the cloud can decrease time to recover by up to 400% versus non-cloud.
Each component of CA ARCserve r16 now includes a common and secure cloud connection layer which provides strong integrated access to cloud storage and takes advantage of private and public cloud services, for off-site protection, archiving or additional storage capacity including support for Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. AES encryption and integrated support for the Eucalyptus Private Cloud Standard are additional reasons service providers and organizations building clouds, choose CA ARCserve as their standard for hybrid data protection. Unlike other industry failover options, CA ARCserve solutions provide you a significant cost savings when building a comprehensive cloud failover service. You can now utilize our unique cold standby technology where virtual or physical Windows systems are replicated to a public Amazon EC2 or private cloud. This eliminates your need to purchase redundant hardware or pay for unnecessary cloud computing charges.
In CA ARCserve r16, we’ve added a very robust web-based management dashboard. Based on a web 2.0 design, it easily accesses the applications from a web browser manager. Our central reporting and protection management components provide an easy way to have a glass pane view of your infrastructure’s state of protection. As part of the central management, when a central application is added to the environment, the new component appears as part of the interface in the console; providing a truly unified approach to managing data protection in your environment..
You might be wondering what the more granular enhancements have been included in r16. Let’s look at those key enhancements and drill down more into the product details.
We have enhanced CA ARCserve with the ability to leverage and protect a hybrid environment; for instance being able to archive to disk as well as to cloud – private or public. Reducing storage space and optimizing backup speeds was also included – this also especially important when considering leveraging cloud. ARCserve Backup has a very deep integration with ARCserve Disk 2 Disk. This level of integration provides you the ability to also manage volume level backups of a system OS, files, applications, etc…. This gives you a great method to marry and create a Disk to Disk to Tape backup solution – allowing you to create more frequent backups while your servers are up and running and have quick bare metal restore incase of unplanned downtime. Synthetic full backups further enhances the ability to meet your backup window by combining your incrementals into a full backup. Now the inclusion of WinPe makes it possible to do dissimlar hardware bare metal restore. This product is a key component in our portfolio and strategy and we are continuing to make innovative and techonlogically advanced leaps.
So what’s new with D2D? We introduced support for laptop and desktop support. And having integration with the Central Protection Manager allows you to not only deploy your backup agents, but also create backup rules and policies that can be easily pushed out to each device that you’re protecting. This is a great option for organizations that have local + remote offices that they must manage and protect. AES 256 bit encryption is available to help ensure that the information that is backed up is secure. This is even more relevant for those that are wanting to transport their backups and incrementals over the wire to/from either another disk location or the cloud. Supports Amazon and MSFT cloud solution for storage. Bandwidth throttling assists in the amount of traffic that will be going across the network. Finally if you have backed up an Exchange server, you can easily choose a recovery point, open it (without restoring it) and peer in to find the mailbox or object that you may be needing to restore.
New to the r16 family of products are the central applications. I keep touching on the centralized management ability in the portfolio so let’s get a little more granular. The central applications include four components. The Central Protection Manager as I just mentioned provides an easy way to manage all your D2D protected machines. Central Reporting provides insight via a dashboard to give you visibility into the status’ of the ARCserve Backup and D2D backup and recovery that are created for all your systems -- local and remote. This is certainly helpful for example if you are noticing a particular system is having issues backing up. There are tools such as SRM that can drill down and provide you greater detail as to what is going on the server. You can remediate the issue (whether it was a cpu situation or other item). All these items are built again upon the web services architecture that make it easy for other solutions to connect and interoperate with us.
CA ARCserve Replication and High Availability provides continuous protection for those systems where downtime is just not an option. R eplicate data and backups to remote sites and the cloud for disaster recovery We support a heterogeneous environment including Windows, Unix and Linux. The centralized console allows you to setup your policies for virtualization and failover capabilities. Whether its on Prem or into the cloud. RHA is a great solution for those organizations that need immediate recovery.
The new additions to replication and high availability include the ability to include the ENTIRE system (system, files, folders, apps, etc..) for replication, including the system volume. This creates a much quicker approach to recovering from unplanned downtime. There is now also support for all major hypervisors. And 128-bit SSL encryption allows information to be secure as it goes across the wire. Replicate and failover to an Amazon cloud or to a public or private cloud to reduce your cloud service computing costs.
