ack in 2014, more than 20 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions came from the transportation sector, which is
Bmore than 1,700 million metric tons. These massive amounts of emission gases are more or less equivalent of the
total emissions of entire Russia. Sadly, transportation and daily commuting is the second biggest source of Carbon
emissions, while the electricity sector causes the most emissions in US.
Since, its heydays commuting has become one of the most stressful parts of a workday, commuting often leads to high
cholesterol and high blood pressure levels and hampers our general well-being. Still, an average American spends at-least 52
minutes a day commuting. Beyond the strain and pressure commuting and transportation puts on our daily lives, it also emits
a lot of CO2 and CO into the atmosphere every day of the year.
On the other hand/Besides, commuting by cars have reduced in the last decade quite drastically, thanks to the ride sharing
apps, bicycles on rents, or cab hailing services. All these together have eliminated the hassles of daily driving or riding to the
destination. However, still more than 85 percent of the commuters use their personal cars in order to commute to their
respective workplaces.
So! What's the solution?
One of the biggest solutions that we have currently is to completely change the Internal Combustion based- engine vehicles
to Electric based- engine vehicles. And many of the countries like Norway, China, India, Japan, etc. are working very hard to
make this transformation work.
Battery operated vehicles might come across as the epitome of the non-polluting vehicles, but these vehicles are not as green
as they are considered to be. The main reason of the pollution from these electric vehicles is their batteries. According to
Dieselgate? or Electricgate?
5. various researches, production of battery operated vehicles poses the maximum threat to the environment, as it takes twice
the energy to produce a battery operated vehicle than a conventional vehicle.
According to the study, each kilowatt of a battery produces around 125 Kilograms of CO2 emissions. So, as an example, in
order to make a BMW i3’s battery, which is of 22 kilowatt- hour, 3tons of CO2 are being produced. Adding to all these, many
car makers around the world uses aluminum to build the shell of their cars, where it needs to process bauxite into the
aluminum, which eventually needs massive amount of energy.
Also batteries need few earth materials like cobalt, copper and neodymium, and to get those China and Congo is has started
mining activities, which has led to multiple cases of human rights violations and massive ecological devastation.
So, in this edition Insights Success has shortlisted “The Companies with Most Disruptive Transportation Solution 2019,”
who are working to make the world a better place to live in with their groundbreaking transportation solutions.

12. 2Ship helps customers reduce shipping
costs by rate shopping and utilizing
shipping services that best suit their
business needs.
Logistics play a crucial role in the success of a
business and cover a vast area in facilitating trade
and business operations. It is important to
understand that risk, customer's demand, and service
consistency have equal portion of significance to make
logistics successful. In order to develop balance among all
these factors, businesses must follow high standards for
constant improvement in performance.
Companies today are facing multiple problems in
transportation related to cost control, operation planning,
supply and finding inventory, which leads them to approach
different solution providers according to their need,
consuming lots of time and money. 2Ship Solutions, is a
cloud-based Shipping Management System provider
headquartered in Toronto. With integrations to over 280
carriers and dozens of storefronts, marketplaces and
financial systems, it goes beyond labels and address books
to help businesses automate the fulfillment of orders, ensure
delivery efficiency, and provide full visibility and accuracy
throughout the order and shipment lifecycle.
Hundreds of e-tailers, corporate mailrooms, third-party
logistics providers and freight forwarders use 2Ship every
day to ship smarter and shorten the Last Mile. A true
software solution with a freight offering, it is used by
customers worldwide to ship across all carrier types, from
Same Day and postal, to small package, and all freight
modes to full containers. This means any business with a
handful of shipments, to those who ship 200,000+
shipments per month, can use its services. Companies will
never need to move or find another solution for their
shipping needs: all locations, carriers, accounts, inventory
users and history are centralized and available via 2Ship.
One Centralized Solution
The 2Ship solution focuses on Centralization, Control and
Visibility. It's the single solution that ties the entire supply
chain together: it delivers all carriers, accounts and services
in one system for true real-time rate shopping with all
outbound and inbound locations, administrators and users,
orders, inventory and shipments. It enforces all logistic
policies and settings across customers' userbase, so
everyone falls in line. View, track, report and analyze
freight spend in a single reporting engine. The solution also
measures and monitors carrier performance in an instant,
and that's all just part of the core.
The 2Ship Connect module enables customers to self-
connect with their own storefronts, marketplaces and
financial systems in minutes. Customers also have the
option to leverage the full suite of Application
Programming Interfaces (APIs) to connect to their own
unique systems to 2Ship. And as a last resort there's the
2Ship Integration team who can take on any custom API or
ODBC integration for a client.
Throw in its Item2box calculator and eliminate the scale,
measuring devices and the entire ship station in operations.
The company also assists in showing the best way to pack
and ship B2B and B2C orders by rate shopping pieces
versus skids. If returns are an issue, the company has five
different solutions to automate and meet all your return
policies from consumer-facing to pre-authorized. And its all
solved across a vendor Drop Ship supply chain, too.
“Having the right returns solutions in place is so important
because it can save businesses up to 70% on return costs,”
explains Russ of 2Ship Solutions.
2Ship's also got you covered when one needs an inventory,
and pick-and-pack system. With its warehouse management
module, customers can manage, track and synchronize
inventory across all locations, and with its order routing
optimizer, there's no more overspending. 2Ship is not just a
single customer application. It is also a 3PL application and
a freight forwarder solution to price, sell and invoice freight
across all customers and freight modes. It is more than just
a rate, ship and track system. It's truly The Logistics
Solution.
A Techno Maven
Russ Proos, Founder and President of 2Ship Solutions,
started the company back in 2006. As a technology
specialist contracting in the industry for several years, Russ
saw the power of leveraging a SaaS model for logistics
when SaaS was still in its infancy. The ultimate goal was to
build a best-in-class shipping platform that every business
could afford.
According to Russ, “Having worked as a Solution
Specialist in the industry and having felt the challenges
first-hand, I wanted to level the playing field after seeing
the great divide between large corporations and small
businesses when it came to the shipping solutions they
could afford. This was never about money; this was always
13.
14. about solving the problems of smaller businesses that were
simply being ignored.”
Since then, 2Ship has brought some ground-breaking
features and creative solutions to the industry that
companies of all sizes have adopted to cut costs and go
“greener.” Russ's out-of-the-box thinking continues to drive
the organization to solve the challenges of the industry. He
continues to lead the company in finding new ways to get
customers shipping smarter. Combining technology, data
and Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning with
imagination and creative thinking has kept 2Ship ahead of
the curve as the supply chain continues to evolve.
Exclusive Offerings
2Ship challenges itself to be to itseverything shipping
customers, and the single solution they need for 100% of
their logistics movements. The primary way the company is
creating an impact on its customers is by offering a single
solution that overcomes many challenges in the supply
chain. Many systems in the market can solve one or a few
challenges but this solution addresses as many – if not all –
of the customers' supply chain hurdles. By offering a single
solution, customers no longer need to move across various
systems to get the info they need and execute their
processes. As a result, they experience a significant positive
impact to their operational efficiency, information accuracy,
and logistics cost reduction.
To complement this, 2Ship is laser-focused and heavily
invested in providing capabilities to theSmarter Shipping
customers. In addition to its core features, the team further
supports customers' growth and maturity through these
additional smart technology offerings and a lot more in the
future:
2Ship Item2box
By combining SKU-level packaging attributes and
warehouse packaging availability, 2Ship can accurately
calculate piece, weight and dimension information for
orders based on their contents so customers no longer need
to manually measure and weigh each shipment to calculate
true shipping costs. They can eliminate their ship stations
and leave it to 2Ship to measure and accurately calculate
shipping costs for orders directly from their e-commerce
sites and marketplaces, and all in real time. “It's efficiency
at its prime, and there is no more wondering why you keep
quoting less than what you are ultimately billed for
shipping charges,” says Russ.
2Ship Drop Shipping
With growing demand for drop shipping, 2Ship enables
stores and marketplaces to rate and assign carriers to pick
up parts of orders from suppliers and vendors directly and
deliver straight to customers' doorsteps. The company's
customers no longer have to worry about comparing
15. carriers and shipping rates to find the best way to drop ship
orders, 2Ship instantly puts customers in .auto ship mode
Virtual Carriers
Through 2Ship's carrier integrations, the company is
empowering businesses to break free from carrier-
determined routes. Customers who use 2Ship can act as
'Virtual Carriers' and create their own routes using the
company's carriers. This means the customers no longer
need to be tied down to a single carrier route; they can
create routes on-demand and ship according to the needs of
their business.
Freight Analysis and Recommendation Engine
2Ship has the ability to take its customers' shipping history
and combine this data with carrier routes and services to
find faster routes and cheaper rates for future shipments
with the same shipping variables. With this intelligence,
customers can look to 2Ship to help them optimize their
future shipments to save them time and money.
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
2Ship is disrupting the industry with technology that
leverages AI and machine learning to provide the truly
smarter shipping solution. Very soon, its solution will be
able to combine historical data with current external data to
predict some really great things for its customers and the
industry. Russ shares, “We're building, testing and scoring
different models. It's all in the works and under tight wraps
for the moment but we're very excited to elevate the industry
using data and AI/ML.”
Breaking Status Quo
The biggest challenge is helping companies to break away
from the status quo. This is either a manual operation or an
antiquated system they've been using for too long. 2Ship
realizes there are many companies sticking to their
spreadsheets and ad-hoc processes because they're
comfortable or because they're unaware of any other
solution that can overcome their challenges. The costs
associated with remaining status quo are immense and
include costs to maintain systems and create workarounds,
cost of mistakes, cost of lost business velocity, cost of
limitations and preventing new market entry and service
offering. These all are negatively impacting the success and
growth of a business.
2Ship finds itself having to educate customers about the
higher risk associated with no change. Overcoming the
preconceived notions of how complex an integration or
automated process must be is another challenge.
There is a better – and smarter - way to conduct shipping
and logistics. In 2Ship the team is taking every opportunity
to share the risks and costs associated with not

and B2B shipping.
17. implementing a solution. The company is conducting
research and sharing data around how the world of e-
commerce and retail has evolved so businesses can
benchmark themselves and see where the gaps and
opportunities lie for them. It is seizing opportunities to talk
about how 2Ship can help businesses with the challenges
they face in their omni-channel, cross-border, and high-
demand environment. The company is here to support
businesses in their cost reduction and growth initiatives and
will continue to do so through further development and
enhancements in technology.
Achieving Success with Customer Gratification
Russ believes, “Our experiences and the lessons we have
learnt in the last 10+ years have shaped 2Ship into the
company and solution it is today. Our biggest achievements
have come from the hardest lessons we've had to learn, as
well.” The company has been fortunate to meet the right
people at the right time and acquire some great clients along
the way. The team has learned to listen closely to clients
and understand both their processes and pain points. They
combine their expertise and experience to deliver solutions
that eliminate their customers' headaches and manual
processes.
The biggest achievement is the flexibility and agility in the
company's offering, not just as a business but as a solution,
too. The company states, “We have built our applications
in-house from Day One and our ability to add, customize
and configure our solution to anything a customer wants or
needs has given us a clear advantage over our competitors.
We're fast and inexpensive.”
2Ship strives to be the affordable, best-in-class
Transportation Management System (TMS) for every
business. Its primary goal is to remove as many roadblocks
as possible to getting a customer the solution they need; this
usually comes down to affordability for customization and
integrations. A typical 2Ship integration with a customer's
order or warehouse system is a four to five day process. The
company also offers a full API package so customers can
integrate 2Ship using their own resources. The system also
features a Do-It-Yourself wizard that connects 2Ship to
various storefronts and marketplaces. 2Ship has eliminated
any upfront costs to automate the order, inventory sync, and
shipping flow with these external platforms.
Today, 2Ship's product is no longer defined by a single
acronym or description. Yes, the solution is a TMS at its
core, but it is also a freight invoicing and auditing solution,
a consumer-facing application, a warehouse management
platform, an inventory centralization system, a carrier and
freight forwarder solution, and most recently a virtual
carrier ecosystem.

In smart grid, smart energy network depends upon
comprehensive communication with integrated charging
stations. The communication with the smart grid is
incessantly measured and controlled through an IP-based
connection. It additionally permits load compensation with
the assistance of interconnecting charging stations.
Additionally, vehicle-to-grid communication makes it
potential to integrate special charge models and supply new
services. Moreover, in future the vehicles connected to the
smart grid unit expected to perform batteries for storing extra

FunctionalitiesofE-Mobility
There are two different kinds of plug-in electric vehicles, such
as plug-in hybrid vehicle and pure electric vehicle. Were plug-
in hybrid vehicles are equipped with a combustion engine and
pure electric vehicle encompass pure electric connectivity.
The proper electricity-production drastically reduces CO2
emissions compared to traditional combustion engine cars.
From the perspective of the electrical grid, people’s habits and
daily schedules can probably cause peak demand at certain
times of day, which may cause electricity network congestion

RevolutionaryTrends ofElectricalGrid
In an electrical grid, the energy system becomes progressively
relied on renewable energy sources. The wants to the
electrical grid are ever-changing with latest trends. The
alternative energy is generally non-controllable,
suburbanized and unsteady. E-mobility brings purposeful
technology which reinforces the transportation medium and

Nissan IntegratesE-Mobilitywith SmartGrid
The well-known automobile brand, Nissan is introducing its
own electronic vehicle or e-mobility vehicle with smart grid
technology. Nissan additionally proposes to introduce
technology and business ties between electric driving and
smart grid. Moreover, Nissan is on the point of introducing
energy storage for a vehicle for domestic usage supported

Governmentbacking
This government’s commitment to electric vehicles is being
matched by an increase in interest from drivers, as the
perceived hurdles - including the ini al cost of switching to
an electric car, and the mile range compared to tradi onal
petrol and diesel cars - are being cleared. Last month EVs

There’s also been be er proof of the environmental impact
of EVs, such as a recent European Climate Founda on-

AnewbreedofEV
One company is on a mission to help drive the adop on of
electric vehicles. Octopus Electric Vehicles is pioneering an
‘EV bundle’ which will give drivers everything they need to
make the switch, for one monthly price. The innova on has
come from energy supplier Octopus Energy, which is driven
by a mission ‘to make buying energy as easy as buying
cornflakes’. Similarly, the team at Octopus EV wants to help
to make the switch to EV as easy as possible, for as many
peopleaspossible.
CEO of Octopus Electric Vehicles, Fiona Howarth says: “For
us, the EV journey begins long before we start talking about
leasing op ons and charge point installa on. There’s a big
educa on job to do - many people s ll believe that they’ll
need to stop every few miles to recharge and that the range

the market, with each offering at least 150 miles of driving

Con nues Howarth: “We’ve found that people are o en
surprised at what an electric car can do. I think there’s a
general misconcep on that the technology and the pricing
has stayed largely the same since EVs came to market a few
years ago, whereas in fact today’s electric car is almost
unrecognisable from its older incarna on, and a hell of a lot
cheaper. Ba ery costs came down 80% in six years –

Agile Octopus tariff, which lets customers see the
fluctua ons in wholesale energy prices and adjust their
usage accordingly. It’s just the beginning of how the
company intends to use smart meter technology, which
allows them to measure and record electricity usage in
real- me and offer cheaper electricity when demand on
the grid is low.
Fiona Howarth believes this will be a landmark year for
electric vehicle adop on in the UK. “Tesla has
revolu onised the market and now all other vehicle
manufacturers are rapidly bringing their EVs to the market.
Think of the switch from analogue phones to smart phones
- we’re in a similar transitory phase. If the Government can
deliver on their EV plans, and we think they can, the
carpark of tomorrow is going to look very different to the
gas-guzzling lot

As well as the monthly lease of an electric vehicle, Octopus
EV organises the installa on of a home charge point and
smart meter. The monthly lease cost can also include
insurance, service and maintenance, as well as help and
support for the dura on of the contract.
There’s even a bespoke electricity tariff, designed
specifically with EV drivers in mind. Dubbed Octopus Go, it
offers renewable electricity at just 5p/kWh between the

How Vehicle-to-Grid is changing the game
Electric vehicles have been criticised for placing more demand on an already overloaded grid. But a consortium of
industry experts is hoping that electric vehicles could be the solution to the grid’s capacity issues, rather than a problem.
Led by Octopus EV and Octopus Energy, the consortium has won over £3m of funding from Innovate UK (backed by
government departments DfT and BEIS) to test the viability of vehicle-to-grid charging on UK roads.
The Powerloop project offers EV drivers the chance to help balance demand by supplying the grid with power from their
car batteries during the peak hours of 4-7pm, before recharging in the early hours of the morning while demand is
lowest. In return for plugging in their cars 12 times a month to supply charge during the evening, Powerloop drivers will
get money off their monthly leasing cost.

Shift
marketing. This difficult balancing act where they have
to enhance their expertise on the account of billions of
dollars to be invested, and minimising the pass-on effect
to customers, has sparked vigorous discussions in recent
times.
An industry which has evolved astonishingly with
passing time will evidently respond to this universal call
towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Euro
Standards, the first and foremost emission regulation
ever formulated in the wake of astronomically growing
pollution across the globe, were initiated in 1991. On its
basis, California Air Resource Board (CARB), a primary
institute which governs all emission related rules in US
was made. CARB which works in tandem with
Environmental Protection Agency (EPAs) is known for
its stringent regulations which are adopted by most states
in the country.
Ultimately, the issue which remains is how are the
current automotive companies going to amend
Industries in their true essence are the systems driven
by technical excellence and customer satisfaction.
These two variables are the vital ingredients for any
organisation to thrive in this competitive domain.
Unfortunately, not all the time these dimensions prove to
be absolutely fruitful. Contingencies do strike! The
Automotive sector is no exception to that.
One such history-defining challenge in the form emission
norms had entered into the market back in 90s and its
latest version has caused automotive industry to disrupt.
Constantly rising air pollution made lawmakers to
establish few amendments for restoring the nature's
balance. These amendments or regulations impose
constraints in front of the firms making them to upgrade
and update their tools.
To survive and succeed, automakers need to revise
policies and strategies on different fronts including
technology, infrastructure, recapitalization and
August 2019 33
36. themselves to match these norms and appeal customers
without tightening their budget at the same time? Thus,
they are analysing keyways to adopting these strict
emission norms and not losing their beloved customers
as well.
1.Technological Innovations
In the history of automobile, many revolutionary
changes have been made. Be it the discovery of Spark
Ignition or Compression Ignition engines, or the
development of Electronic Traction Control system
which employed a smooth integration of machine
intelligence into mechanical power.
In this need of the hour, technical perfection has to stand
up once again if automotive industries have to retain
their title of change-makers. Thanks to many bright
engineering minds, such ideas are kept surfacing which
will help to reduce emissions from automobiles and
simultaneously enhance fuel efficiency too. Higher
mileage eventually helps to achieve lesser vehicular
emissions.
Mechanisms like Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR),
Three Way Catalytic converter (TWC), Selective
Catalytic Reduction (SCR), Gasoline Direct Injection
(GDI), Variable Valve Train (VVT), Continuous Variable
Transmission (CVT), Turbochargers, Diesel Particulate
Filter (DPF), On-Board Diagnostics with oxygen sensors
and transmission-systems-provided-with-many gears can
help to trap and reduce Nitrous oxides (NOx),
Hydrocarbons(HC), carbon monoxide(CO) and
particulate matter (PM). Additionally they have proved
their prowess in enhancing mileage, realizing the dream
of highly fuel efficient futuristic vehicles with zero or
least emissions.
One more important aspect of these add-on systems is
that they operate with a prerequisite condition of high
graded fuel. Fuel quality of present days can hinder the
flawless working of above mentioned equipment. Fuel
with any amount of sulphur greater than 10 parts-per-
million is considered ill-suited for the current
infrastructure. Therefore, fuel refineries have to upgrade
their machinery to achieve the desired quality. Good
news is that Oil Marketing Companies have already gear
up the process to upgrade their refinery infrastructure.
2. Down-weighting is the key!
Many organisations employ a method where they opt for
unconventional size accompanied with lightweight
structure to fit in the regulations. For instance, instead of
hunk sized SUVs, companies nowadays launch many
SUVs having smaller sizes and much lighter in weight.
This can give them advantage in two ways. Firstly, with
less intrinsic load to propel, vehicles achieve better
mileage which is the most appealing factor for many of
the buyers. Second thing is, production costs associated
with shrunk size vehicles are proportionally smaller,
further shrinking the actual cost a consumer has to bear.
Needless to say, reduction in size and weight together is
merely a dream without materials having desired
properties. Fortunately modern material science has
blessed us with materials like Carbon fiber, Aluminium
Alloy, Magnesium Alloy, Hybrid material and Polymer
Composites which not only flaunt their lightweight
characteristics but also their durability and wear
resistance.
3. Green fuel powered vehicles
Automobile fraternity is facing a paramount shift in
terms of propelling power as newer, cleaner and cheaper
alternatives are being introduced. From its introduction
th
of SI and CI engines in late 19 century, they are a
popular choice among mass and technocrats. But their
environmental demerits are slowly pushing them towards
extinction. Solar vehicles, electric vehicles, hybrid
vehicles and gas powered vehicles can be the solutions
for growing environmental pollution and depleting crude
oil sources. As a wise has man said, “change is the only
permanent thing in this world”, automakers have no
choice than embracing these changes despite of their
higher initial cost. However, the advantages it offers are
countless and unquestionable.
4. Unorthodox Designs
Until now people have used automobiles for
connectivity, comfort and the means of carrying goods.
Time has come to rethink over our expectations from
them since we are employing vehicle designs which
serve purposes commonly. An example where a vehicle
August 201934
37. widely used for intra-city connectivity is also equipped
with larger trunk spaces which could have been avoided
helping in reduction of overall weight and size.
Dedicated category of vehicles for dedicated purposes
employing unique shapes seems a distant dream for now
but certainly not impossible.
5. Spread the word!
Customers tend to have a problem in paying extra cash
unless they know the long-term benefits and payback
time of these accessories. A study shows that a EURO VI
norm car which costs about $1000 more than its EURO
V counterparts retrieves the investment within 2-3 years
for enhanced fuel efficiency.
Protecting our mother Earth from harmful effects of
pollution is a responsibility of every single individual to
assure a healthier and greener environment to our future
generations. Despite of initial investments which these
amendments demand, they are essential for the very
existence of this planet. An intensive marketing strategy
about making people aware of the benefits received at
the core can instil an appreciation of value over cost.
This can make the job easier for manufacturers.
6. Credit System: A tool for rectification
Credit system is a depository system where if an
automaker exceeds standards in early years, it can bank
credits to use in future years with stringer standards. An
interesting statistics revealed that last year, many
automobile giants like Mercedes Benz, Honda could not
mitigate the emissions to the level drafted by regulatory
agencies. However, thanks to their previous years' credit
points, they could manage to surpass the benchmark.
Some experts even call this credit score mechanism a
daunting loophole which is compromising the serious
efforts of environmental protection. However, while
tightening the grip on vehicle pollutants, stricter
emission standards like EURO VI, CARB and BS VI had
to provide a breathing space for organisations.
Entrepreneurs can exploit this situation to some extent in
case they fall marginally short of meeting the norms.
7. Lower profits with higher number of customers
A prime hurdle while employing these technical
modifications is that their cost is undoubtedly reflected in
increased vehicle prices. This can discourage people
from purchasing new automobiles resulting overall
slowdown of the industry. After all, people pay vehicle
producers for horsepower and not for environmental
protection.
That being said, we should also face the reality check
where bearing the whole cost isn't possible for any
organisation. So, passing it on to the customers is the
only way manufacturers have. But a chunk of those costs
can be swallowed by lowering the profit margins. This
strategy can make businesses survive without losing their
customers.
Undoubtedly, emission regulations are the need of the
hour with millions of vehicles rolling out in the market
worsening the pollution issue globally. Conforming to
them is of prime importance when considering the noble
virtues of the efforts making this planet a better place to
live. But succeeding and surviving in this transiently
modifying world of connectivity, automobile industry
has to adopt some changes and strategies. An industry
with a history of marvellous inventions and a potential to
shape the future will surely be on the driving seat while
experiencing this sustainable awakening.
