• Used in urban areas
• Guidance by the NS vs. finding the way on
  one’s own
• With NS
  – Not clear where to go, especially in roundabouts
  – Misinterpreting the guidance also leading to late
    lane changes
• Finding the way on one‘s own
  –   Hesitant to leave roundabouts
  –   Slowing down and searching for direction signs
  –   Stopping to consult the map
  –   Late lane changes
With and without Navigation System
• No differences between the rides with and
  without an activated NS regarding
  – Speed behaviour
  – Longitudinal control
  – Lateral control
  – Obeying traffic rules
  – Interaction with other road user
  – Antcipation
Problems with Navigation System
• Problems while driving with NS
  – Not recognising stop or yielding signs
  – Hard braking before red light
  – Missed guidance (distraction, low volume)
  – Missed green lights
  – Doubting guidance (ending in speeding and not
    indicating)
  – Inappropriate indicator use
• Conflicts (Rear-end, right-angle) were clearly
  related to the use of the system

Procedure Mobile Phone



• Used mainly in urban areas
• Participants were called twice
• Had to answer different questions
Results Mobile Phone
• No differences between the rides with and
  without an MP conversation regarding
  – Longitudinal control
  – Lateral control
  – Obeying traffic rules
  – Interaction with other road user
  – Antcipation
• Significantly less errors in driving too fast
  while using the MP
Problems with Mobile Phone
• Problems while using MP
   – Keeping the speed (either too fast or clearly slower)
   – Due to distraction without interaction with others
        Missing turns and late lane changes before intersections
        Staying long at green light or at roundabouts
        Not recognising the speed limit and using wrong gear
        Putting hands away from the steering wheel
    – Due to distraction - interaction with others
        In turning situations
        Overtaking without paying attention
        Heavy braking behind queue
• All conflicts caused by the test person
Conclusion Mobile Phone
• Feedback from test persons:
   – Most difficult task in comparision to the
     other IVT systems
   – Stopped talking on the phone
• Distraction by the conversation affecting
  the driving behaviour on different levels
  – Keeping speed
  – Route guidance
  – Interaction with other road users
Advantages of
   Information and communication systems
• Advantages NS:
  – Helps to find the correct way
  – Better than handling with map


• Advantages MP:
  – ???
Problems of
   Information and communication systems
• Problems NS
  – with receiving and interpreting information
  – when guidance is doupted
  – attention not all the time on the road

• Problems MP
  – On different levels of the driving task
  – Referred as most difficult task

Conclusion Mobile Phone • Feedback from test persons: – Most difficult task in comparision to the other IVT systems – Stopped talking on the phone • Distraction by the conversation affecting the driving behaviour on different levels – Keeping speed – Route guidance – Interaction with other road users
