3. Architecture for humanity
Architecture views are
representations of the overall
architecture that are meaningful to
one or more stakeholders in the
system. The architect chooses and
develops a set of views that will
enable the architecture to be
communicated to.
The "style" is really quite varied and
has a number of different influences.
Even though a definition of the term
is difficult to articulate, contemporary
homes typically include unusually
shaped frame, an open floor plan,
oversized windows, and the use of
"green“. Such homes also often have
an organic design, fitting into the
surrounding space.
4. Museums and Galleries
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
Museum expansions
designed by prominent
architects often result in a
new main entrance to the
addition’s grand (and new)
lobby/party hall. In many
cases, this reorientation of
the circulation gives visitors
no visual knowledge of the
original museum, but an
extraordinary structure.
Knut Hamsun Center
Steven Holl made his first sketches
for the Knut Hamsun Center,
Norway, in 1994. During this long
gestation period the building
entered the collective
consciousness to the point that it
was as if it really existed — it is
said that tourists ventured to the
site to find no building at all.
5. Commercial
50 New Bond Street and 14 St
George Street, United
Kingdom.
A mixed-use revitalization of
three buildings on a London
block, anchored by two office
buildings for the investment firm
Scottish Widows.
It is a luxury residential building
with ground-floor retail space;
Eric Parry Architects refurbished
the 18 apartments above. The
development also includes a
central courtyard shared by the
three buildings.
6. Hotels and Hospitality
Axis Viana Hotel
Viana do Castelo, Portugal
The architects designed a
stack of volumes that create
a Lego effect, allowing the
shape of the hotel to
change depending on the
perspective. From some
vantage points it looks long
and skinny, like a train. The
exterior consists of
aluminum, black glass, and
green stone—a combination
that generates subtle green
reflections.
Naked Stables Private Reserve
Ben Wood Studio Shanghai
Fusing nature and luxury, the
architects wanted the reserve's
guest rooms to feel like an
extension of the landscape. The
rooms take the form of
individual tree-top villas. the
architects housed the reserve's
educational and cultural
facilities (which include the
teahouse and a pottery studio)
in round bamboo structures
7. Park and public place
Virginia Avenue Park Expansion
Santa Monica, California
In 1999, Koning Eizenberg Architecture and
Spurlock Poirier Landscape Architects were
commissioned to design the Virginia Avenue Park
expansion. The public restrooms on the southern
end are adjacent to a new children’s water-play
area and playground. A former warehouse was
converted into a teen center with a courtyard
nearby
8. Stadiums and Sports Facilities
Olympic Stadium
Gerkan, Marg und Partner (GMP), Kiev,
Ukraine
The stadium was renovated to host a major
soccer tournament, Euro 2012—seen as an
important way of improving Ukraine's
image. However, the building's role as a
national symbol is balanced against its
responsibilities as a piece of the city. “We
have designed stadia elsewhere that are
more spectacular,” says Hoffmann, “but
here we are in the middle of the city and
didn't want to be so 'noisy.' ”
9. Tall buildings
Sports City Tower
Doha, Qatar
The Sports City Tower,
constructed in Doha,
Qatar, for the 15th Asian
Games last November and
December is not a
practical building. They
were instructed to
produce a building that
would become a
memorable symbol for the
fast-growing country.
Shanghai World Financial Center
Shanghai, China
Upon its completion last year, the
Shanghai World Financial Center,
designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox
(KPF), became the world’s tallest
building—sort of. The Shanghai
World Financial Center still cuts
through the skyline of China’s
financial capital.
10. High-rise gardening
Soon all eyes will surely be on the Bosco Verticale
when it opens in Milan at the end of this year.
The new skyscraper promises to bring a hectare
of forest into the city's central business district,
as well as hundreds of new homes. Rather than
cold steel and glass, the surface of this high-rise
will ripple with organic life. "I have yet to see
very many of these 'living building' designs
become reality, which is why the Bosco Verticale
is such a big deal," she says.
The team working on the project includes
botanists as well as engineers.
11. Great Future Projects
Shimizu Mega-City Pyramid
14 times higher than the Great
Pyramid of Giza, the technology
to create this massive structure
doesn’t yet exist—the super-
strong, lightweight materials
required are still in
development. Floating over the
Tokyo Bay, the mega pyramid
would be comprised of 204
smaller pyramids stacked eight
high. There will be the
residential, commercial and
leisure areas.
‘My Dream, Our Vision’ by Design
Act
Singapore-based design firm
Design Act created the ‘My
Dream, Our Vision’ concept
for the World Expo
Singapore Pavilion
Competition. It uses
permutated cubes to
generate a pixelated-looking
sculptural building that that
looks like an illuminated
‘digital cloud’
12. Inference
The fact that there is a general
belief in a future life is no
evidence of its truth.
Architecture can influence human
behavior in many ways. Architects
do not just consider the shape of a
building; they also need to design
the structure to be visually
appealing, and to make its visitors
comfortable. In addition I want to
say that we should appreciate
people who try to refine our world.
