HOW DO I WRITE AN EFFECTIVE CV? Chapter 1
ARE YOU SURE ABOUT LEAVING? HMMM…
“I am about to create the ticket to my next dream destination.” But first:
Know and sure about your reason(s) for leaving
 Know about what you want next in your next role especially in terms of job
description
 You have confirmed that your current situation will not lead you to what you want to
achieve
 Know your transferrable skillset
 Have minimum and ideal expectations
 Have high if not ample pride in yourself and your works so far
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 5
YOU HAD ME AT “SKILLS”
Make an impact!
Indicating your niche skills is great, but not enough. Why not also include the
transferrable skills acquired throughout your formal work experience that can raise
your profile against the rest? No harm to have “additional advantages” such as:
 Project Management
 Regional Experience
 P&L Management
 People Manager
 Technical & Creative Writing
 Internal Audit
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 6
WHO ARE YOU AGAIN?
1. Personal Details
 Name
 Citizenship
 Email
 Phone Number
 Compact Profile Summary covering your specialism, aspiration/long term vision
and expectation/preferences
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 7
AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
2. Work experience
 Starts from current to past
 Company, Department, Title, Tenure (month & year)
 Job Description (at least 3 major ones) covering objective of the role,
product/service offered by the company and your relevance to the operation,
people management, area coverage, reports expected, cross-department/office
interactions
 Achievements (YoY target/KPIs, acquired expertise, process improvements,
additional participation or company/dept. representation)
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 8
GREAT TO KNOW THESE!
3. Educational Background from the first Tertiary Education & Beyond
4. Additional Information
 Language
 IT/System Skills
 Trainings attended
 Current Salary (be strategic about this)
 Notice period/Date of Availability
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 9
COMPLICATED? FORGET IT!
 Be honest with every information provided
 CV in Word for easy info extraction and reformation by recruiters
 Multiple spellchecks & proofreading
 Less fluffs, more tangible stuffs
 The Cleaner, the Better (and Lighter!)
 Heavy with keywords of skillset or aspired job titles
 Include links of online works or media coverage related to your achievements
instead of attaching the items
In a nutshell, the easier your CV to the person processing it, the more favourable
response you will get with your application.
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 10
LET THESE GO!
 Personal opinions such as my strengths etc. that are unjustified with additional
reference
 Reasons for Leaving
 Photo
 Salary Information
 Affiliations such as political, sports club, religious activities
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 11
I’VE WRITTEN AN AWESOME CV.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Chapter 2
FIRST THING FIRST
Do research & market mapping on the type of job you want next in terms of:
 job title variations of similar job scope
 which type of company/industry would have the job titles or department related to
the job scope
If you are open in terms of the next industry/companies to join:
 Google search: vacancy <"job title" AND "job title"> <location> OR
 Trusted Job boards search - LinkedIn, Jobstreet etc.
and apply directly to the job ads found either on job boards or company career
portal
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 13
YOU CALL IT CABLE, I CALL IT PROMOTER
If you are only interested in specific or limited companies and/or industries, ask yourself, do I
know anyone there?
YES!
- Pass your CV to your connection in the industry or company OR
- Get the contact details from them and email your CV to the Hiring Manager, cc'd to the
internal Talent Acquisition/Recruiter
NO…
- Go to job board & company website to check for related vacancies
- Submit a general application on their career portal
- Optional, get connected to the hiring manager or internal recruiter if they are on LinkedIn
and inquire
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 14
ISN’T IT EASIER IF I USED
RECRUITMENT SERVICE?
Chapter 3
YOU ARE GOLDEN…
…if your current profile matches exactly to the person described by the recruiters in
their advertisement. In fact, don’t be surprised with the VIP treatments you will receive
as they will do everything and anything to move the process and keep you interested.
However, if you are 1 level below the job’s seniority or your fit to the role is between
60 % to 90%, still apply to the role because you can always be the additional CV
for their KPI and who knows, you are the overall package that the client is looking for.
If you are none-of-the-above, expect delay or no response at all.
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 16
IT’S JUST A MATTER OF TIME
Don’t fret it if you were just a consolation at the moment you’re dealing with the
recruiter. Keep the relationship going to:
1. Make them your “as-and-when” option
2. Get expert advise in terms of targeted industries, companies or personnel
3. Get advise on managing your expectations
4. Create relationship for future use or opportunities
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 17
WOW! FANCY AGENCY NAME, BUT…
1. Are they reputable and reputable in the market?
2. What type of jobs and level of seniority they focus on?
Seniority: C-level, mid-to-senior level, fresh
Type: Permanent, Contract, Temporary
3. What are the specialism or roles that their consultants are looking for?
Specialism: Sales & Marketing, Accountancy & Finance, HR, IT etc.
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 18
GREAT AGENCY, APPARENTLY!
NOW, WHAT DO I DO TO GET A JOB HERE?
1. Call and speak to someone from the relevant specialism team to identify the
consultant who handles your type of role and/or industry (or the closest to if no
direct match)
2. Speak to the consultant and inquire if they can represent you to any suitable
active vacancies they have or speculatively if there’s none
3. Repeat step 1 & 2 with different agencies to know and compare your consultants
if necessary
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 19
QUANTITY VS. QUALITY?
It is actually up to you in deciding whether you want to use only one or several
recruiters – just make sure they are the quality ones.
In deciding which consultant is best for you, always go for:
1. The recruiter who has suitable vacancies for you NOW
2. The recruiter with the most experience and success in recruiting for the function or
industry you are targeting for
3. The recruiter who asks for exclusivity on your profile as this shows their
confidence in placing you
4. The recruiter that has positive and comforting tone of voice when talking to you
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 20
RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
1. Expect no revelation on company name if your CV is not in their hands
2. Spend time to meet the recruiter and be remembered
3. Discuss and decide on the status and potential of your profile to them
4. Be transparent regarding your motivation(s) and never give false info
5. Inform your CV movements and interviews attended
6. Discuss every job proposed thoroughly, ask for JD from the recruiter, take time
and don't hesitate to negotiate or decline with justification
7. Discuss and agree on action plan, timeline, steps to be expected by each party
and pre-set follow-up time or intervals
8. Share leads and/or recommend great candidates
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 21
I HAVE STARTED APPLYING FOR JOBS.
WHAT ARE MY CHANCES?
Chapter 4
DO YOURSELF A SERVICE
1. Read and understand every job ad as a whole, not just the title
2. Use one-step-at-a-time approach to avoid negative impressions such as you being
pushy or desperate
3. Apply to the vacancy MOST suited to you in one department if there are several
suitable vacancies within the same organization
4. Apply ONLY to the vacancy MOST suited to your profile if from the same
recruitment agency
5. Always follow up each application with status-update call(s) to the internal
recruiter/TA/HRBP/consultant conducting the search
6. Be willing to spend time on mandatory and/or additional qualifying instructions/
requirements such as career portal registration, assessment or test, cover letter,
certificates, profile summary etc.
7. When it comes to interview invitation, be flexible but not too submissive either
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 23
HOW TO KEEP COOL
AND SECURE AN INTERVIEW?
Chapter 5
BE COOL BY BEING SMART
1. Proper research, planning and efforts will always yield greater results
2. Set a good timeline to avoid critical urgency. But if time is not a luxury, plan and
pick the right channels to maximize your chance to get that new job
3. Manage your expectation well in terms of aspirations or expectations while
knowing the baselines and the negotiables
4. Keep your options open, rank them according to priority
5. Remember the jobs that you have applied to; create a list if necessary to keep
track of their statuses
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 25
BE COOL BY BEING SMART
6. Don't pursue, keep applying for or hang on to opportunities you stand little chance
in securing
7. Manage your financial well if you’re in between jobs to avoid unnecessary stress
8. Be friendly, patient and nice to everyone and anyone, every time (especially when
picking up a call from unrecognized number)
9. Work together with your recruiter, not expecting them to work for you
10. Start building your portfolio/interview folder, make sure latest salary slips are in
your possession and prepare for interviews by practicing
ISMALISHAK/JOBSEEKING101/201250919 26
DID I MISS ANYTHING? Or anything else you would like
to know?
BEFORE WE GO
After this presentation, you should now be more aware of:
1. The information you should and should not have on your CV
2. The best approach for you, in your current situation, to conduct your job search
3. Decide on whether recruitment service will maximize or minimize your chance to
secure a new job
4. Actions that can increase the likelihood of you securing an interview
5. The mistakes that will lead to frustration and destructive behaviours while job
seeking
ALL THE BEST!
