PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
2012 – 2015: Chief Technology Officer – Microsoft 4Afrika - Middle East and Africa
I co-lead the Innovation Pillar of a Microsoft big-bet initiative in Africa; Microsoft 4Afrika; a multi-
year, multimillion-dollar strategic initiative to triple Microsoft’s business in Africa by catalyzing
and incubating local innovation in key growth sectors. We then leveraged those innovations to
get youth and SMEs to the cloud. I defined the Innovation Pillar strategy, executed it, and
constantly evaluated it for relevance and impact.
ZiDi Award winning EMR, and services utilization solution which also accurately forecasts the
potential demand for over 5,000 health facilities in Kenya.
AGIN An Agric information exchange solution which is deployed on telco networks and serves as a
marketplace for banks, credit bureaus, agro dealers, insurance providers, … who need this
information to effectively service the farmer. Was highest Azure consumer in 1st year.
SpacePointe An exciting new online market place to bring eCommerce to functionally illiterate micro SMEs
who number in tens of millions, and serve hundreds of millions across Africa.
In addition to the engagement with CxO leadership of the startups, I cultivate relationships with
government policy makers, international development organizations, private sector oriented
NGOs, and key private sector influencers, to mobilize funds and go-to-market facilitation for
these startups / ISVs. Examples of such organizations and networks I draw from are: The
Gates Foundation - I am a member of the Gates Foundation Technology Advisors - one of a few
based in Africa. GOAL – an NGO seeking to apply ICT and private sector approaches to some
of Africa’s most intractable problems. In the past year, GOAL has won grants of over $30M,
and through my engagement, Microsoft 4Afrika is their technology partner, and as such we
advise and consult with their private sector implementing partners on ICT design and
implementation. GRM International – working on an MOU towards becoming a key
Technology Partner for this global development management firm which will give Microsoft
visibility into, and participation in the key ICT innovations that are getting incubated, and funded
in the hundreds of millions of dollars by USAID, DIFD, EU, etc. in Africa.
March 2011 –2012
Partner Cloud Capability Development Manager –Microsoft WPG 2010 – Feb 2011
As Partner Cloud Capability Development Manager I carried worldwide responsibility to
develop, and land strategies, programs, and training assets to enable the worldwide Microsoft
partner ecosystem establish profitable cloud practices. Although based in Redmond, I executed
the program through a worldwide v-team of consultants, in collaboration with the SMSG partner
roles.
My main accomplishment in the role was the definition and landing of an industry acclaimed
cloud Business Model Transformation workshop series. The core curriculum was designed as a
collaborative effort between the Office 365, CRM Online, and Azure BGs, in consultation with
industry experts.
The content was then delivered as a series of CxO face-to-face workshops that allowed the
executives to appreciate the opportunity the cloud represented to their businesses, and
understand how to manage a cloud P&L as an on-prem partner.
2. Success in this role depended on excellence in collaboration with the BGs, SMSP partner
facing roles, and a successful engagement with the partner CxO audience.
Senior Product Manager & Group Product Manager –DPE - Microsoft Learning
As Group Product Manager in Microsoft Learning – Training Platform Strategy, I was
responsible for MSL platform strategy for the Learning Partners and end users. I worked with
Product Managers, the worldwide field team, and the worldwide Microsoft Learning Partner
community to deliver digital content, ILT, and virtualized training labs to the channel. This was
accomplished in a highly matrixed, Influence without Authority, type of role. Success was
measured in Product Management excellence; defining and articulating value of offerings, deep
customer understanding and advocacy, and driving a multi-discipline v-team.
2004 – 2008 - Academic Developer Evangelist
As an ADE, I was responsible for Microsoft relationships with researchers and teaching faculty
in the major universities in 6 western states; Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and
Utah. Specifically, I was responsible for articulating the value proposition of Microsoft
technologies for teaching and research to skeptical university faculty. Within Microsoft I built a
broad network of associates from multiple technology groups including XNA, Visual Studio,
Windows Mobile, Windows core, Robotics, MSL (ITA) and Microsoft Research to support my
evangelism efforts. My technical background, people skills, and ability to collaborate allowed
me to deliver great results for Microsoft and my university partners.
While in the role, I was one of the most successful ADE in North America, and I received a
Gold star award and a promotion for my results.
2002 – 2004 Academic Developer Evangelist (Regional Lead)
As one of 3 national Academic Developer Evangelist leads, I worked with two colleagues and a
national director to provide thought leadership, operational oversight, and professional
development to a team of 12 Academic Developer Evangelists who managed the US region; 4
of these worked directly for me. This role required clearly understanding the higher education
space and crafting strategic, mutually beneficial relationships between Microsoft, and the key
computer science departments in PacWest district. Through the role I developed trust
relationships with the Deans, Department Chairs, individual researchers, and students. In the
end I was the face of Microsoft to these departments, and a trusted advisor at that.
1990 – 2002 Microsoft Corporation Redmond, WA
Lead Design Engineer in Test – Microsoft Help Engine, Java Debugger, Visual Studio IDE
At the time, the Help runtime was a shared component that shipped as part of the Operating
System, as a redistributable by all major Microsoft products including Office, and also by 3rd
party ISVs. My job as the Test Lead involved planning, scheduling, coordinating, and guiding my
test team of 7 engineers to deliver a quality product. I also worked very closely with internal and
external clients to understand and advocate for their unique requirements to the development
team.
Prior to the Team Lead role, I was a Software Design Engineer in Test on the Visual Studio team
and worked on Project Management features, Microsoft Foundation Class libraries, the Java
Debugger, and other Visual Studio features.
Below are some strengths that enabled me to succeed on the Visual Studio product team:
Solid Technical base and Curiosity – Testing a development tool like a Visual Studio
debugger for a new programing language requires a solid technical base, but just as
importantly the love and curiosity to learn and grow. A good understanding of technology
and how it can translate into real solutions for the partners and customers has characterize
my career and will continue to do so as I broaden my influence.
Excellent people skills – I worked and coordinated activities with a wide array of
stakeholders in Development, Testing, Program Management, as well as external clients.
3. These teams were also distributed in several geographies. This too has been a hallmark of
my career, and I believe an asset to any organization.
Client Advocacy – As the Quality Assurance Lead, I was a customer voice on the
engineering team. I would seek to understand the needs of the different clients within the
company and outside, and represent those clients’ needs at all levels and phases of the
product development. The customer advocacy background has greatly benefited me as I
have transitioned into more customer / partner facing roles and pivoted to developing
customer/partner value propositions.
Ability to harmonize the urgent with the important– As a lead on a product which was
consumed by Windows and Office, I would be called upon to provide input on decisions
which impacted the big and smaller customers. Maintaining level headedness in the face of
such decisions and pressures required the ability to see the important from the urgent, and
presenting a reasoned position defensible with data and clear benefits and tradeoffs.
Community Service
Leadership Advancement International http://oneleaderatatime.org
Co-founded Leadership Advancement International (LAI) (now Leaders for Africa), an
organization whose mission is to develop a community of well-trained, well-connected, world-
class servant leaders in developing countries who can act as catalysts for community and
national development. We work with local partners in developing countries to select, profile, and
train these future leaders. All our students get an opportunity to study at a western university on
scholarships negotiated by LAI. These students participate in a parallel leadership training
program while in school, and also get to work on internship projects at home and abroad before
graduation. On graduation, Leaders for Africa facilitates their repatriation to avoid the brain drain
issue.
As founder and chairman of the board of a young organization, I have had to work in all areas of
the organization including development, budgeting, and external relations. Additionally because
of my university work at Microsoft, I have negotiated all our current university partnerships.
