The Game Sense Approach
1. Why is game sense approach used in my
primary PE classes?
HOPE THIS COVERS EVERYTHING YOU
WANT TO KNOW
2. What is Game Sense Approach?
A Game sense approach has said to be developed in Australia during the mid 1990’s, it is an approach that uses an
understanding model by extrapolating and or breaking down of a whole skills into many types of ways in order to successfully
achieve this skill.
Game sense approach has been seen to have a positive effect on primary school students as they process certain principles
whilst participating in different category games.
These games are:
- Invasion games (soccer, football).
- Net/court games (squash, tennis).
- Striking/fielding games (cricket, baseball).
- Target games
(Light, 2012).
These games I implement within my PE classes enables my students to gain knowledge on specific skills in each game
category rather than just participating in each activity.
3. Undertaking a game sense approach is IMPORTANT!
A game sense approach is a very exciting and innovative way that both teachers and coaches may use in order to
encourage the students and or players to develop skills in a realistic context (Light, 2012).
I use Game Sense Approach in my year 2 class to create a positive environment whilst participating in PE classes and
sporting activities. I always want to encourage my students to learn skills in a fun and easy way. Each step to reach a
specified skill is explained in a clear and easy way which Pill (2012) discusses. Pill (2012) suggests that game sense
approach is breaking down different types of sporting sills into many steps which are then gathered all together using a
sequence from a simple skill to a more complex one.
Game sense approach is said to enhance and shape teaching structures by defining and exploring key concepts ! (Light,
2012).
4. Game Sense and it’s strengths
Just imagine playing a type of sport without knowing which skills to apply?
It would be impossible for the students/players to play at a continuum level due to not mastering the skill as a whole.
However the use of Game Sense Approach has allowed students to understand a whole skill that is needed in sporting
activities.
Game sense approach is usually used in my PE classes and also coaching areas which has been seen effective as it will
direct your children to increase their performance at a higher level.
Pill (2012) states that tactical and strategic thinking will be achieved through this approach and the development of sport
specific motor skills.
Game Sense Approach is used in everyday life. Just imagine your child drinking from a cup without knowing how to? That’s
right, it will be very hard! This also works with the students in my PE class. Hence it is very useful to use Game Sense
Approach to strengthen your children's level of participating a specific skill.
Therefore, the approach develops thinking through a physical activity which will enhance your children's ability to understand
why the skill is performed and what other skills can be implemented in order to make that skill innovative and not just
performing it.
5. Just imagine a sport without knowing how
to master the skill?
Mastering a skill before participating in sporting activities and or games will increase the cognitive level of my students. That is why
Game Sense Approach is used in my PDHPE class.
Placing a student to play in a sporting game without them having any knowledge on how to master a specified skill will create low-self
esteem, low confidence and not much participation.
Hence, Game Sense approach has many positive aspects and strengths.
- PDHPE as a whole is a very important key learning area! Game sense approach is used in order to reach the aims and
objectives that are stated in the K-6 PDHPE syllabus.
Fundamental movement patterns and coordinated actions of the body
This main point clearly explains the reason as to why Game Sense Approach is used. My students are given the opportunity to
understand types of skills, and are encouraged to act this skill. It boosts self-esteem, confidence, communication, interaction and
or problem solving (Board of studies, 2001).
Thus, during my PE classes each step of a skill is clearly explained to meet the requirements of my students and create a positive
environment.
If there are any questions you would like to ask, please be free to do so!
Kind regards, Miss Jasmin Soufi.
