1. "The Right Stuff"
How can we make our classrooms
more globally competitive?
Anna Norman
2. What is the Right Stuff?
What is the "right education" young
people need to prepare for the jobs of the new middle?
-TL Friedman says in his book "The world is Flat" :
"It isn't specific courses you should take but rather certain
skill sets and attitudes."
He focuses on Four that are important to anyone seeking a
pathway to the new middle.
3. The Magic Four:
1. The ability to "learn how to learn"
2. Have passion and curiosity.
3. You need to like people.
4. Nurture your right brain as well as your left.
4. The ability to "learn how to learn"
To constantly absorb
teach yourself, new ways of doing
things.
and Love learning
5. Have passion and curiosity.
CQ + PQ > IQ
That is TL Friedman's way of
explaining that when the world is
flat, curiosity and passion for a
job, for success, for a subject
area or even a hobby are so
much more important.
So be passion with what you do;
and be curious about new things
and you will be on a great path to
success.
6. "Give me a kid with passion to learn and a curiosity to discover
and I will take him or her over a less passionate kid with a high
IQ everyday of the week" - TL Friedman
Children who are
passionate to learn are
more likely to grasp
new things faster than
those kids with higher
IQ's but have no
curiosity to learn.
7. You Need to Like people
- If students feel comfortable in the
classroom and feel wanted and liked
then they are more likely to learn.
Teachers must learn how to teach
children to like everyone.
8. Nurture your right brain as well as your left.
teach children to be creative
help them learn how to solve
problems on their own.
let them know its okay to think
outside the box.
help them understand it is okay
to have fun while learning.
If teachers help children to do these
things they are sure to be a more
well-rounded learner.
9. how to help both sides of your brain learn
crossword puzzles
yoga
using your other hand
moving your body
drawing things out (if your stuck
on a problem break out your pencil
and start doodling)
martial arts
10. Project Based learning vs.
Traditional Testing
With project based learning we are giving our students to the
tools necessary to be able to apply learning to real life
situations. Let them learn by using hands on activities instead
of reading straight from a book or sitting in a lecture hall.
11. Working with others
Working in small groups inside the classroom will prepare our
students for the real world by learning that they have to work as
a team to succeed.
12. Technology:
Technology is a growing form of communication in the world.
Students need to be able to use technology in a fun learning
manner to be prepared for the work force.
Teachers should incorporate many pieces of technology into
their lesson plans.
13. Students to learn that there is more to learning than test and
numbers and lectures. They need to know that learning can and
should be fun!
