- My name is Torsten de Riese and I am here to give you a quick introduction to the recently launched Guardian and Observer Digital Archive. Guardian News and Media is the first national newspaper publisher in the UK to make its entire archive accessible to the public via its website. The vast collection covering 216 years of independent reporting by both The Guardian and The Observer was previously only available in bound volumes or on microfilm. Now, for the first time, the general public, students, teachers, researchers can browse and search this unique collection online. In November last year we launched the first phase to the general public on our website Guardian Unlimited. The launch covered the periods of 1821-1975 for The Guardian and 1900-1975 for The Observer. The remaining material will be released later this year. In December we launched our archive to UK universities and next week to US universities, where we already have 40 trials. Today, here at BETT, we are reaching another milestone, by officially launching our archive to UK schools. Our vision is to make the entire archive available to all pupils and teachers in the UK. Before I talk about the archive in more detail, please allow me a few word about the Guardian and its publishing roots.
