                                                   Gillibrand, Petraeus to Visit Fort Drum

                           U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) and Holly Petraeus, Consumer Financial Protec-
                           tion Bureau, will be guests at a Fort Drum community meeting the afternoon of March 2
                           at the Commons here on post. The meeting will be open to all Fort Drum soldiers, fami-
                           lies and civilians.

                           Gillibrand and Petraeus will focus their discussion on how to best assist military families
who are facing financial issues. There also will be a question-and-answer session for the community.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was established to protect American consumers from unfair, deceptive or
abusive practices at the hands of financial services providers - banks, credit card companies, mortgage and payday
lenders, and debt collectors, to name a few.

One group in particular is often at risk of being targeted by unscrupulous lenders: service members and their Fami-
lies who find themselves in financial trouble and strapped for cash to cover debts and expenses due to the unique
challenges members of the military face.
Further details, to include the time of the meeting, will be made public as they become available.

Budget Proposal Aims to Support Troops, Families

President Barack Obama's fiscal 2013 budget proposal has several provisions for Servicemembers, veterans and their
families to include $8.5 billion in Defense Department (DoD) base funding to support military families, from child
care and education for military children to counseling and employment programs for the entire family, and 465 mil-
lion for medical research specifically focused on psychological health, TBI and posttraumatic stress disorder.

Earlier last week, officials said defense leaders are fully committed to assisting Servicemembers and their families.

Leaders Aim to Ease Spouse Employment Woes

First Lady Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden, Defense Secretary Leon E.
Panetta and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Martin E.

at removing barriers for spouses struggling to obtain occupational li-
censes.

TRICARE Young Adult Prime
Military families have a new TRICARE Prime option for young adults without healthcare coverage. TRICARE
Young Adult Prime gives eligible Family members TRICARE Prime medical and pharmacy coverage with low out-
of-pocket costs for a $201 monthly premium. Military Family members who are not married, who have “aged out”
of other TRICARE eligibility (up to age 26) and who have a TRICARE-eligible sponsor are eligible to purchase
TRICARE Young Adult (TYA) coverage. TYA enrollees can choose either TYA Standard or TYA Prime coverage,
based on eligibility as the choice will determine your monthly premium, out-of-pockets costs and how you access
care. Each TYA program allows access to the TRICARE pharmacy benefit. For complete information, along with
the application form, please click: http://1.usa.gov/AtW8zV or click: http://1.usa.gov/w4Hiyq for more information.

                                                        Call for Exemplary Military Children

                                                    Between multiple deployments, relocations and time spent apart,
                                                    Military Families must learn to make every second together
count. While Soldiers are protecting our country, their Families are doing their part on the homefront to keep the
tight-knit community from unraveling.

To honor their sacrifices and to celebrate April as Month of the Military Child, The Mountaineer staff is looking for
four Fort Drum youths who show exceptional character at home, in school and in the community. Submissions will
be accepted through March 9 and should be limited to 200 words.

 Children will be selected based on the following criteria:
* Scholastic activities and involvement
* Family contribution (helping out at home, chores, etc.)
* Community activities and involvement
* Leadership skills
* Volunteer service
* Academic standing / achievement
* Other activities, such as clubs, internships and summer work

Include any awards and honors the child has achieved.

A nominee must be a student within grades 7-12 and reside with a military service member assigned at Fort Drum.
Selections will be made before April 1. The Mountaineer will highlight each child with a feature article and photos
on the "Mountaineer People" page (B3). Families with more than one child may submit one entry per child or a
combined entry. To submit a child for consideration, email the essay in a Word document to
drum.pao@conus.army.mil with the words
"Military Child Nominee" in the subject line. Include the child's name and age, and the military parent's name, unit
and telephone number.

If a child is selected to be featured, The Mountaineer staff reserves the right to reprint any part of the essay in the
article.

Submissions received after the deadline will not be considered.

  • 2. Page 2 F R SA F L AS H Gillibrand, Petraeus to Visit Fort Drum U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) and Holly Petraeus, Consumer Financial Protec- tion Bureau, will be guests at a Fort Drum community meeting the afternoon of March 2 at the Commons here on post. The meeting will be open to all Fort Drum soldiers, fami- lies and civilians. Gillibrand and Petraeus will focus their discussion on how to best assist military families who are facing financial issues. There also will be a question-and-answer session for the community. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was established to protect American consumers from unfair, deceptive or abusive practices at the hands of financial services providers - banks, credit card companies, mortgage and payday lenders, and debt collectors, to name a few. One group in particular is often at risk of being targeted by unscrupulous lenders: service members and their Fami- lies who find themselves in financial trouble and strapped for cash to cover debts and expenses due to the unique challenges members of the military face. Further details, to include the time of the meeting, will be made public as they become available. Budget Proposal Aims to Support Troops, Families President Barack Obama's fiscal 2013 budget proposal has several provisions for Servicemembers, veterans and their families to include $8.5 billion in Defense Department (DoD) base funding to support military families, from child care and education for military children to counseling and employment programs for the entire family, and 465 mil- lion for medical research specifically focused on psychological health, TBI and posttraumatic stress disorder. Earlier last week, officials said defense leaders are fully committed to assisting Servicemembers and their families. To learn more about the support for troops and families, please see: http://1.usa.gov/zYapUx Leaders Aim to Ease Spouse Employment Woes First Lady Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey unveiled a new report on Wednesday February 15, 2012 aimed at removing barriers for spouses struggling to obtain occupational li- censes. • 3. Page 3 F R SA F L AS H TRICARE Young Adult Prime Military families have a new TRICARE Prime option for young adults without healthcare coverage. TRICARE Young Adult Prime gives eligible Family members TRICARE Prime medical and pharmacy coverage with low out- of-pocket costs for a $201 monthly premium. Military Family members who are not married, who have “aged out” of other TRICARE eligibility (up to age 26) and who have a TRICARE-eligible sponsor are eligible to purchase TRICARE Young Adult (TYA) coverage. TYA enrollees can choose either TYA Standard or TYA Prime coverage, based on eligibility as the choice will determine your monthly premium, out-of-pockets costs and how you access care. Each TYA program allows access to the TRICARE pharmacy benefit. For complete information, along with the application form, please click: http://1.usa.gov/AtW8zV or click: http://1.usa.gov/w4Hiyq for more information. Call for Exemplary Military Children Between multiple deployments, relocations and time spent apart, Military Families must learn to make every second together count. While Soldiers are protecting our country, their Families are doing their part on the homefront to keep the tight-knit community from unraveling. To honor their sacrifices and to celebrate April as Month of the Military Child, The Mountaineer staff is looking for four Fort Drum youths who show exceptional character at home, in school and in the community. Submissions will be accepted through March 9 and should be limited to 200 words. Children will be selected based on the following criteria: * Scholastic activities and involvement * Family contribution (helping out at home, chores, etc.) * Community activities and involvement * Leadership skills * Volunteer service * Academic standing / achievement * Other activities, such as clubs, internships and summer work Include any awards and honors the child has achieved. A nominee must be a student within grades 7-12 and reside with a military service member assigned at Fort Drum. Selections will be made before April 1. The Mountaineer will highlight each child with a feature article and photos on the "Mountaineer People" page (B3). Families with more than one child may submit one entry per child or a combined entry. To submit a child for consideration, email the essay in a Word document to drum.pao@conus.army.mil with the words "Military Child Nominee" in the subject line. Include the child's name and age, and the military parent's name, unit and telephone number. If a child is selected to be featured, The Mountaineer staff reserves the right to reprint any part of the essay in the article. Submissions received after the deadline will not be considered.
