Heart Rate Lab
Aim:The aim of experiment is to find out how different kinds of exercise affect the heart
rate.
Hypothesis:Running around the track will increase the heart rate more than walking
around the track, because running makes us tired and walking makes us nothing.
Variables:
Independent variable: Type of exercise: Walking vs. Running around the track,
It will be changed by alternating between walking and
running.
Dependent variable: Heart rate after exercise, it will be measured it by
measuring with stopwatch in beats per minute.
Control variables:
Control variable 1: Same temperature, it will keep it the same by doing
the exercise in the same day.
Control variable 2: Same person, it will keep it the same by using the
same test subject.
Control variable 3: Same equipment, it will keep it the same by using
the same stopwatch.
Materials:
Stopwatch

Test Subject
2. Method:
1. Get Test Subject
2. Take out stopwatch and make test subject sit still
3. Take the heart rate of the test subject for 1 minute
4. Repeat step 3 three times
5. Record the average of these three results in Data Table
6. Make test subject walk 1 lap around the track
7. Measure their heart rate as soon as they finish
8. Wait until their heart rate goes back to average resting heart rate
9. Make test subject run around the track
10. Measure their heart rate as soon as they finish
11. Repeat steps 6-10 three times to obtain average heart rate after exercise
12. Record all data in Data table
Results:
Data table 1: Running walking heart rate record table (beats per minute)
Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Average
Running 159 130 160 149.67
Walking 110 118 120 116
Data table 2: Resting Heart rate (beats per minute)
Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Average

Conclusion:
The hypothesis was correct. Running heart rate was higher than walking heart rate. The
data shows that as the test subject runs or walks, running heart rate was higher than
walking heart rate. This shows that the hypothesis was correct. When the test subject
runs, the test subject gets tired, so the heart rate goes up. When the test subject walks, the
test subject doesn’t get tired, and the test subject is normal. Therefore, the heart rate goes
little. The data is believed to be reliable, because all people’s heart rate goes up when
people run. As the same way, people’s heart rate goes up little when people walk too. It
was difficult to measure the heart rate after the test subject finished running or walking.
The reason why is that the test subject came in different time in each trial, so it was kind
of difficult to measure the heart rate after the test subject finished running or walking.
Evaluation:
One part of the method that went really well was setting up for experiment. Some things
that could be changed for the next time are place so that experiment can be more
interesting. Another thing that could be changed is to add more test subject. It would be
more interesting to compare test subject 1 and test subject 2. In a future experiment, the
input variable could be the listening to music and dance. It could make the heart rate goes
up higher and it’s fun to listen to music and dance.
