3. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH EXPERIENCE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Full Occupational Health (OH) remit, including the following:
o Managing own diary and organising own work-load and case-load.
o Complex case management (e.g. significant physical illness; work-related
accidents/injuries; stress; mental health; ill-health retirement).
o Writing reports and presenting statistics to management and to HR re H&S
issues and re any other health trends/problems with the workforce. Meeting
with HR managers on regular basis to discuss sickness absence and cases.
o DSE (computer station) ergonomic assessments and advice/guidance.
o Work-place visits for general ergonomic and H&S assessments.
o Pre-employment health screening and pre-employment health interviews,
particularly with emphasis to immunisations status and infectious diseases.
o Making decision on delays to certain health clearances due to health issues.
o Pre-employment medicals for certain occupational groups including vision
screening (distance/near/intermediate/peripheral/colour vision); audiometry;
spirometry; cardiovascular fitness assessment (Chester Step Test).
o On-going yearly or biennial/triennial review medicals for certain occupational
groups (e.g. fire fighters, school crossing patrol workers).
o Phlebotomy and sending bloods for BBVs screening (blood-borne viruses) and
for assessing immunity status of other infectious diseases.
o Sharps injuries / exposure to bodily fluids incidents / organising follow-up.
o Assessment of blood results and implementation of appropriate action.
o Organising and administering immunisations programmes for the above.
o Administration & assessment of results of Mantoux test and/or Ellispot blood
test for screening of TB exposure/immunity, & referral for chest XRay.
o Administration of BCG vaccine when indicated, and referral on to Chest Clinic
or TB Service where appropriate.
o Collaborative working with the Health & Safety team - with regard to Sharps
injuries, with regards to exposure to any other hazardous substances, with
regard to any other issues. Assessing the data and Identifying any trends.
o Collaborative working with the Infection Control team with regards to contact
tracing and screening of staff following any outbreaks of infectious diseases.
o Collaborative working with the Communications dept in order to publicise
specific health promotion campaigns, release OH newsletters & bulletins, etc.
o Collaborative working with the clients’ GPs, Specialist doctors,
physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, CPNs, therapists, counsellors.
o Organising and running ‘outreach’ clinics for staff (clinics off-site, away from
the OH dept) for immunisations/blood tests/ergonomic assessments/etc.
o Representing Occupational Health at various hospital committee meetings.
o Composing OH newsletters and bulletins, and health promotion materials.
