- Define the difference between generic parts and actual spare parts. Spare parts are often manufactured by an OEM for a specific piece of equipment.
- All of these descriptions could be for the same item.Item record entry should be restricted to a minimum number of people, or, at the least, have strict guide lines for entering the data.Suppose the first item is needed for a work order, but the balance is 0. I delay the work, possibly missing the due date, when in fact I have 8 of the items on hand and don’t know it.
- The list of parts and assets should be contained in a searchable, sortable list. We don’t want to have to remember the make, model and supplier when it would be easier to identify the part by a generic description.By following a designated taxonomy for identifying items, it is easy to find parts quickly, or interchangeable parts if needed.Think of it as item specs.
- Equipment Manufacturer name in descriptionWhat does the number in the description mean?How do we know what this part really is?
- If classifications are used correctly the description should look more like a specification.
- By including manufacturer or vendor names, you limit yourself to using only that part when there may be multiple companies that can supply it.Too many variables can be used if free hand text is allowed to be used. Some people use dashes, some spaces. Some abbreviate words, some don’t.Adding vendor or manufacture limits the places you can order the part from. Adding the equipment or location name limits this uses for the part.

- Classifying a rotating item is really no different than classifying any other spare part.On the Specifications tab, click Classify
- Once you choose the Noun, in this case Tire, and the adjective(s), in this case Tractor and All season, Maximo tells you what attributes need to be populated
- As soon as you complete the attributes and save the record, Maximo will complete the description
- Mark the item as rotating. Make it condition enabled if necessary – tires often are.Then create a unique asset number for each unit in the storeroom and on the equipment.
- Examples of OEM parts could be brackets, custom gears, unique shafts or anything fabricated for a particular use.
